The Brew Haus - Rotation Set After Shocking Release

In a stunning move on Tuesday, the Milwaukee Brewers have released veteran right-hander Claudio Vargas.

Vargas was released Tuesday.
Vargas was released Tuesday.

Vargas, who was a near-lock for a starting rotation spot behind Ben Sheets and Jeff Suppan, pitched well this Spring, posting a 3-1 record with a 3.86 ERA and seemed to be poised to improve on the mediocre 2007 he posted.

With lefty Chris Capuano likely out for the season with a torn ligament and impending Tommy John surgery, the rotation will now feature Sheets, Suppan, Dave Bush, Carlos Villanueva, and Manny Parra to start the season.

Upon Yovani Gallardo's return, however, the rotation will likely change, with either of the latter trio to be relegated to bullpen duties.

I'll have much more on the Brewers coming up in my season preview. It's been too long.

Need proof he sucked? The Brewers lost their #2 starter to Tommy John surgery and he was still released.

I'm not saying he didn't suck. You said that he sucked. I am saying that he still does. Past tense vs present...

Wow I thought Vargas had made the cut. But if Kelsdad says he sucks I guess that's why Yost cut him.

Like it said in the article, Vargas had a pretty good spring. He was actually one of the Brewers' most consistent starters. It was shocking because he was pretty much penciled in by everyone that he'd be among the five starters. That's why.

In my honest opinion though, he was the most expendable. It's not like they were going to cut Bush, Gallardo, Villanueva or Parra. They're all young and developing yet.

Parra pitched the game I saw last week. I was pretty excited to see him and he was impressive. He had one inning where he seemed to lose his command and tried to get cute and got whacked around but all in all was a good outing. And he throws HARD....

If you remove a couple of poor innings from his Spring Training resume, he's pitched very well all spring. I was extremely impressed with him last year as well.

If anyone should be released it should have been Suppan or Capuano who both were terrible last season. At least show Vargas some respect and give him a chance to catch on somewhere else instead of releasing him with less than a week before the season starts.
