The "Hoch's" Nest: Matt’s Four-Part Seahawks Extravaganza -- Part Two

Today is Tuesday.
Why does that matter? Tuesday was the day that Mike Holmgren said was "the day".
After the loss in Green Bay the questions about the future of the Seahawks coaching staff started to engulf the media.
"Would Holmgren come back?" "Does Holmgren want to continue?" "Will they sign him to an extension?" "What about Jim Mora?"
Holmgren said that he would sit down with his wife, Kathy, while they vacationed in Arizona and decide about his future. He said he would be back on Tuesday.
NFL Network reported that Mike was back in his Kirkland office on Monday.
That seems like an omen of some sort. He was able to make up his mind earlier then expected.
Holmgren had said that this is the best group of players he has ever dealt with and that he honestly feels that they are filled with talent.
Maybe he decided that was enough.
Or maybe he realized that has been with this team for 9 seasons, good enough for 3rd longest tenure among active coaches (behind only Mike Shanahan and Jeff Fisher). He has 8 Division Championships in 16 seasons as a Head Coach, 3 Conference Championships and 1 Superbowl win.
Mike Holmgren is one of the most innovative coaches to ever grace the NFL, learning from one of the greatest ever: Bill Walsh. He was voted the best play-caller in the NFL by a panel of judges in USA Today.
He has always been the type of coach that liked to fix a bad situation. This is why he came to Seattle. He came from the Packers to be the GM and the Coach of the Seahawks and to try to build up a perennially mediocre team.
And he has done that.
So why are people asking for his resignation? Let me rephrase that: why are fans calling for his head?
Too many fans are saying that he has become obsolete and that his plays are getting predictable. I honestly heard someone argue that John Gruden is a better coach.
I say you're crazy.
If he leaves, the “window” may close. A new coach will come in and shake things up, possibly with a different philosophy. What happens if a philosophy doesn’t fit with certain players on your team? Then you struggle with growing pains or with needing to add new players.
Everyone has christened Jim Mora as the future Head Coach. Why? I still have no faith that he can lead a team to glory. He is a perfect coach for college but not the pros. Why? He is a “players coach”, and as we have all seen this doesn’t work. You need to be able to strike fear in the hearts of your team.
The players like him, but will they follow him.
But, if Mike stays you will see a push to the playoffs unlike any you have seen from this team. Everyone is aware that his time is limited and that every year may be his last.
You will also get the consistency that a team needs to be successful. The winning teams do more addition then subtraction. There is not a lot of turnover, instead they add depth at the positions they need the most. Consistency is key.
So if Holmgren leaves you will have a massive shake up. It is inevitable.
His decision is based around his health and whether he feels he still “has it”.
I hope to hear in the next few days that Holmgren will be back as the coach of the Seattle Seahawks.
The city needs it.
