That High School Athlete's Jersey....Your Tax Dollar At Work

In what will be a three part series, Sports Wise Guys plans on revealing how your tax dollars are spent on high school athletics.  We will also get into the issue of whether a higher priority is set on athletic achievement over educational.

Today's post, Part One of our series, will outline my opinion on the subject of high school athletics as it pertained and pertains to me and my experiences.

Part One : My Opinion and Yours

Next time -----> Part Two : Athletic Achievement Is Greater Than Educational Achievement

I have played sports since I was about five years old.  My dad was a strong believer in using sports as a way to stay active and healthy.  I never looked at sports as an end to a mean.  And by that I mean, it was always a dream to become a professional basketball player, but in reality, who's going to want a 6'2" 230 pound white kid running the point?  I knew I was never going to make it in professional sports and that I didn't have to to become successful.  Kids, especially the unfortunate ones in the inner city high schools, have nothing else to work towards other than an athletic scholarship.  Now I don't mean to make a sweeping generalization about inner city high schools that the only way they get out of the ghetto is through sports, but that's reality.  You will not find a lot of kids shooting for an academic scholarship.  This mentality needs to change and quickly.  Too many kids are fed a dream of grandeur, the mansion, the cars, the wealth, and the lifestyle of the rich and famous.  Not only are these dreams fed by family, but far too many times by their own teachers, who should instead be teaching these kids how to read and write at a high school level. In addition to the failure of some schools to instill a high education expectation, these programs suck up money some schools need to buy the necessities for their kids to learn properly.

Nice jersey, who bought it?
Nice jersey, who bought it?

My realization that something was wrong with how public tax dollars were spent at my school occurred when my Spanish teacher could not allow us to take our books home.  We could not take our books home because there was not enough books so all the kids taking Spanish could take them home.  Not only that, we had teachers without classrooms, floaters were what they were referred to, and this was after we had a huge addition to our high school.  Now, I'm all for school athletics, it keeps kids out of trouble for the most part, promotes a healthy lifestyle, and gives the student body a reason to have some school spirit (I hated typing that).  However, I don't think that our education should suffer because of athletics.  The athletes always had a bus to get to games and they always had new uniforms every year.  Why can't I have a new textbook, or at least one I can take home?  Why does my teacher not have a room to prepare her or his lesson plans for the day.  Only 20% of the the average high school student body par take in athletics, only less than 1% make it to a professional level in a sport.  I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I'm pretty sure more kids in those student bodies are going to get a 4 year degree from an accredited university.  And I am also pretty sure it would be much easier for this students to do so if they had better learning materials and better instruction.

My former high school had over $20,000 budgeted for supplies for student activities, which I could only assume included sports.  I could find no specific referral to the athletic department in their budget.  A tenth of that ( $2,000 ) was budgeted for community service supplies which in my eyes would serve the local community a great deal more than any football game that's played.  If more people knew this, do you think they would start asking more questions?  I would sure hope so.  If my kid isn't playing a sport, why should I be paying for it?  Some people would counter this question with another question, "Well, what about Key Club or the Math Team? You're paying for those student activities and your kid isn't in them."  In that case, my response would be, "That may be true, but what would carry more weight on a college application?  That you were a bench warmer on the basketball team or that you were on a Math Team?"  Education will always take precedence over athletics in the real world because it allows more opportunities when you enter it.  For me, Mary Tedrow, a National Board certified teacher and former student-athlete said it best,

"What would happen if resources for sports were removed from schools and consolidated into single sporting complexes where we supported community teams? When education funds are no longer diverted to transportation, uniforms, and maintaining interest in sports, both the energy and resources could be used to improve instruction.  As a result, kids might actually want to come to school, not to play ball, but because the increased attention to instruction will help every student succeed and find a skill to translate into a lifetime of learning and earning."

I think my joke was a little too subtle. If I had read your picks prior to me picking mine I would have picked a different team. Of course I am only kidding.

I do find it funny that there are A LOT of high school teams with better uniforms and designs than college teams.

As a teacher, I agree with you. But it is a lot more complicated than this.

First of all, the bulk of the athletic budget usually comes from boosters, not tax dollars. (And if the school is worth anything, it's a lot more than the $20,000 for school activities you mention.) Also, football, and to an extent basketball, pay for not only themselves, but most other athletics. The math team, unfortunately, does not.

Regarding shortfalls in the budget for books/materials/schools/teachers, you would get much further looking at federal budgets for education as compared to other expenditures.

Lastly, a comment about local funding. This is the first time I have ever heard anyone complain about high school athletic budgets. But every time a school bond vote has come up in districts I have been in, it fails miserably.

I look forward to the rest of this series.

Even if boosters are paying for uniforms and equipment, the district is still going to be responsible for personnel costs. If you live in a fairly large school district, there might be an athletic director. He or she probably has at least one person for support staff in the AD office as well. Not to mention that coaches (usually teachers) are receiving stipends for their work. It's usually a couple of grand a season, and when you add up the amount of sports school usually offer, this is a lot of money a district will be spending.

Again, revenue sports like football and basketball generally create enough revenue to support entire athletic budgets. New football uniforms have little to nothing to do with a lack of Spanish textbooks.

Personally, I have never told a student that sports was their "way out", and have never heard another teacher say so, not even privately. In fact, I tell my students the opposite. I tell them I have taught quite a few talented athletes, but not one that has gone on to have a career in sports, that they probably won't be my first, and that education is their only guarantee. Again, I have never heard a teacher say anything resembling what you suggest, but if they do, they are doing the student a serious disservice.

My grandaughter plays softball for our local school. She's the starting pitcher and is very competitive. She recently complained to me that the boys baseball & football teams get new uniforms and jackets every year. Her team has been wearing the same uniforms for 3 years. She told me that the boys laugh at her when she points this out to them.I told her, "honey you are taking advanced courses and are in the top 5% of your class.Someday you will be their boss and you can laugh back. What comes around goes around.

I have to disagree with this staement. A year out of high school, and I can say that most the sudents there would wish that the teachers decided not to do anything in their classes that day. The majority of students have no interest in learning and just wan to be handed a degree for graduating.

American society's view on education. These kids grow up not understanding how important and valuable is a good education. All they know is that if they are a smart student (with the exception of a few) they will get picked on and made fun of simply for having a better grasp on education. Other kids see this and decide to throw their education out the window so they don't stand out...

It also doesn't help that the government is much too concerned with test scores. Who cares if the United States children are scoring well against each other when the rest of the world is surpassing the education system? It is just a never ending spiral and I have more to say, but I'm not tyring to write an article or anything (espically because it is politics which is not a favorite topic of mine)...

This article is ridiculous. I can not even begin to say how wrong you are with your statement "Kids, especially the unfortunate ones in the inner city high schools, have nothing else to work towards other than an athletic scholarship." And while we are on inner-city kids, they do not receive new uniforms every year, even the basketball and football teams. The ones that do usually raise money on their own. Fundraising and events like it show the value of being a bench-warmer on the basketball team. Even though you are not getting the most playing time, you are still contributing and working as a team. Thats what colleges want to see. It also shows that you have responsibility because you can not be on a team without commitment. I guarantee the commitment is greater than that of the math club. Sports is not just about trying to get some kids scholarships and building school spirit, its about giving young adults something to be proud of through their hard work, building relationships with their teammates and coaches, and giving them a sense of responsibility. Last time I checked those are the values you want to instill in a young adult. And regardless of what you think, high school is about more than just getting an education, its about growing as a person, that is why it is vital for schools to continue to have these programs, and you can not have a program with out the funding. I can see where you are coming from with the descrepancy between girls softball and boys football, and those issues should be addressed, but in my experience that was not the case. While it is true that education should come before sports and clubs, every effort should be made to keep extracuricular activities even if that means there has to be some floating teachers.

I went to an inner city school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My experience was my own and I was just stating what I had experienced while I was there. Your school, if that's what you are referring to, may not have had new uniforms for their kids every year. The point I was trying to make is that in the long run, what are you going to get more out of? A dedication and love for learning or sports. And yes, those can both be combined, and there are kids that do, but through my experiences at the high school level, there weren't very many. My question to people is, why do we pay for these items, jerseys, balls, gym renovations, and etc when we could be using that money for community projects, projects that have a direct effect on the community as whole. What is gained by a win or loss after a football game or a basketball game? Nothing in my opinion. Also, I'm sorry, but colleges aren't going to be enthusiastic about you fundraising for your basketball team over a scholastic achievement or community project. That's just ridiculous. Lastly, I would like to point out that I mentioned the advantages to having school athletics. I agree that sports are a great way to garner self respect and responsibility. My concern is sorely with exorbitant amount of money that is spent on these athletics when, like in my case, I wasn't able to have a Spanish textbook to take home to study. And all teachers should have rooms to plan accordingly for their day. Having floaters is disruptive not only to the teachers instruction, but also the students themselves. So I find your willingness to have teachers walking around aimlessly without a desk to work on and prepare for concerning.

numerous teachers at my high school do not have rooms and even oddley enough my siblings in the brand new 2 years new middle school have them as well, how can a new school be built with out enough rooms?

School districts do this on purpose. If they build enough classrooms for all the teachers, that means that about 25% of the rooms are not being used each period (depending on a particular school's schedule). That is a large expense, when you consider construction/materials cost, electricity, etc for 25% of your school. Districts would rather build just enough to have room for all the students and let some of their teachers (usually electives) float. And I've done that. Floating sucks.

I've solved this problem.

My daughter is homeschooled.

No political bullshit. If she wants to play softball or be on the debate team, she can, she is still part of a school district, we, as taxpaying residents, receive the same rights of students enrolled in the school in our area. All she has to do is go tryout, like everyone else.

When we were deciding on our education options, we spoke with the President of the Home School Association, who was a former (retired) public school principal. He said the average learning time each day for a child is approximately an hour to an hour and a half. Out of a six or seven hour day. The rest of the time is wasted on nonsense like changing classrooms, disruptive students, etc.

It was really a no-brainer.
