Thank you Duncan, you gave me another reason to hate the Yankees

Last time I checked, taking out the catcher at home plate is a legal move in baseball. Well apparently, Shelley Duncan and the New York Yankees don’t think it is, at least not in a spring training game. The situation all started when a player from the Tampa Bay Rays was coming home and the play was going to be close so he slammed into the Yankee Francisco Cervelli, a prospect to make the 25-man roster, broke his wrist and may miss the entire season.

So in Wednesday’s game, Yankee pitcher Heath Phillips threw at a Ray’s batter and was ejected. Then in the second inning, Shelley Duncan slid into Ray’s second baseman Akinori Iwamura with his cleats high... very high! I am talking crotch range.

I think this is crap. The Yankees complained that the Rays were too aggressive for a spring training game. I don’t think that is possible. These are guys trying to earn a roster spot on a big league team. Are they ever going to earn a spot by gently running towards home plate and letting the catcher tag them for an easy out? NO! They are going to get the roster spot by playing gutsy and sacrificing their bodies. That is how you catch the manager’s eye. Not by lollygagging into home plate so you don’t hurt anybody; you’re not going to do that in a regular season game, and if you do you will most likely be benched.

I am not saying I want to see people get hurt, but come on! It is part of the game, at times the game can be physical, so let them play and stop complaining about it. I am hoping for some sort of suspension for Duncan, because as far as I can tell, this was done with intent to injure. As far as I am concerned, this is unacceptable.

So thank you Shelley Duncan, you just gave me another reason to hate the Yankees!

Ahem...couldn't resist. Nice article. The NY radio stations were abuzz about this. Blathering on about Girardi taking control, and the Yankees won't be passive anymore...All nonsense. It's baseball. Yanks - Shut up and play.

Reminds me of the Pete Rose/Bud Harrelson brawl in the playoffs a while back. You're probably not old enough to remember Ray Fosse. He was involved in a collison in an All Star game involving Pete Rose. Once he got bowled over and was injured, Fosse was not the same player.

Something tells me if the Yankees weren't involved this article would never have been written.

Its called protecting your teammates and your reputation, ladies. And you retaliate at the first opportunity so the opponent doesn't get cocky. A Rays player hurts a Yankee with a questionable slide now Duncan's slide is getting questioned?

Bullshit.

But KD, a collision at home plate is a good clean hard-nosed baseball play. Trying to spike a guy, especially a guy without any pads, always has been and always will be considered Bush League. Maybe you can hit a batter or something for retaliation, but you can't blatantly try to hurt somebody like that.

acctully i would have written it even if it was the Red Sox. I understand protecting your teammates. But you don't slid cleats high, that is bull. You let the pitcher through one at him you do not aim for a guys crotch! That is just part of being a guy, but I guess I forgot that Shelly Duncan is more of a women. I agree with SJ and Bobby, I have a feeling that you are KD are the type of player to make a dirty play when your teammate gets hurt after a clean play. The home plate slide was clean, the cleats high slide into second base was not.

well, taking out a catcher is legal. but dropping your shoulder and blindsiding him is pushing it (cervelli was just receiving the ball and havn't even turned around when he got leveled.. had Johnson slide he had a better chance of being safe) as for Duncan. don't like the move. don't think anyone would care had any other team but the Yankees been involved.

DID SOMEONE SAY THAT SPRING TRAINING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE ALL-STAR GAME.Does Bud Selig know about this?? Duncan may be hated by the author but he's being loved by his teammates and that's what counts. What this is really is one cheap play followed by another.Without the 1st one you don't have the 2nd.

I have a lot of thoughts about this game:

Firstly, I must say that the Yankees (at least the ones who think that the game was "unfair") should start to grow up. That play at the plate that injured Cervelli was not intentionally. You are allowed to do that, so a Rays player took advantage of that. And this thing about being rough in Spring Training, that is complete crap. If you're not going to give it your all in any game where there's competition, get the FACK off the field, because there are a lot more players who work hard and are more willing to play on a Major League team than you... day in and day out, whether it's regular season, spring training, or in the offseason.

Secondly, I feel extremely sorry for Yankees' prospect Francisco Cervelli. I hope that he isn't injured for the entire season. It sucks to see something like this happen, especially in a regular season game... but I guess you have to suffer the consequences every time you step onto that field.

Thirdly, I love Jonny Gomes. Standing up for your players is definitely a great characteristic, which is exactly why I liked V-tek a lot more when he stood up for Bronson Arroyo in 2004 (we all know what happened there); it's what a teammate (especially a captain) is supposed to do.

Fourthly, and lastly, it's BASEBALL! Shit happens. I'm sorry, but the Yanks are just taking this too far. I know this is not the end of it. The Yankees and Rays face off each other, 18 more times during the regular season, and I can't wait to see what happens.

So according to you the Rays are totally of the hook for this whole incident? I'm not condoning what Duncan did, in fact the slide was malicious and uncalled for. That being said I think the Rays player that ran into Cervelli was legit. He's 23 and trying to make a MLB team. He has to play hard every chance he gets. If you block the plate as a pro catcher than you should expect somewhere may run you over. With all that said though Romi how could you defend Gomes' conduct in this matter? Yes Duncan's slide was out of line. However, the umpire had already ejected him before Gomes foolishly came charging in. He wasn't involved in the play. He was the one that incited the bench clearing. I agree with standing up for a teammate but you don't always have to be macho and physical to do so.

SportsApple, Gomes was coming in between Iwamura and Duncan. I saw the video on mlb.com, and Gomes didn't do anything but push him away from Iwamura. Gomes sent Duncan a message saying that he doesn't want that to happen, especially during Spring Training. Spring Training is supposed to be a month of friendly competition. Duncan intentionally did that, going after the smallest guy on the field, and Gomes didn't appreciate it, and let Duncan know that he didn't appreciate that. That was it. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes. What I do think is wrong is what you agree with me about: Duncan aiming for something above Iwamura's shin. He was 5-10 away from the base when Iwamura got the ball. He was definitely trying to send a message, and Gomes wanted to respond to that. I have no problem with that.

Romiezzo, I don't know if you ever caught but I did, and there is one reason that play was dirty. If you look at the replay,he was completely airborn leading with his helmet. This is the same reason Pete rose's hit on Fosse was chickenbleep.Especially in a spring training game.If he stayed on his feet and lowered his shoulder I would agree with you, but not the way he did it.Between college and semi-pro I took many hits and gave a few and never had that happen to me, but if I did I can guarantee you I would have been pissed.Maybe because the only time the Rays can put up a winning record is spring training they treat it like the world series but even in the series that would have been a bad hit. When you make yourself a missle you are intending to hurt the catcher period.

First off, let me say I am not a Yankees fan.

I have absolutely no problem with what Duncan did. It was retaliation for the play at the plate last week. You don't ruin a guy's season in Spring Training. You just don't. That's baseball etiquette. The entire Rays organization was unapologetic over it.

If you can't take it, don't dish it out.

I always have a problem with a guy sliding spikes up into another man's inner thigh - always. There are other acts of retaliation that aren't so classless, like beating the Rays into the ground everygame from here until the end of Baseball... unless the Yankees are unable to be top class winners and need to resort to other acts to show they are on top.

When in Florida, Carl Crawford laid a Astros catcher out at the plate. It should be on the jacked up segment on ESPN. Anyway, the Yankees are facking pussies, playing the game one way is what matters... Playing it 110% for every single play in any situation no matter what. Good for whomever it was on Tampa, glad to see they are playing hard. As for Shelly (girl's name) Duncan, go change your damn tampon...

I think Joe Girardi had a point about the collision at home plate...personally, I think its a fair baseball move, albeit a poor outcome...no one would have made a big deal if the catcher didn't get injured... Shelley Duncan on the other hand, was completely classless...and Johnny Gomes didn't help his case...2 wrongs don't make a right...same w/ 3
