Tecmo-izing The '09 Playoffs: Divisional Round

Tecmo didn't exactly make a stunning 2009 debut last week (1-3, just like Kelsdad predicted), but we're bringing it back at you nonetheless. Because, to be honest, who cares about accuracy at this point -- it's fun to run COM-vs-COM simulations of every playoff game just for the hell of it, am I right?

Anyway, here's the usual stuff I say before we can start playing:

  • I didn't make this ROM -- a user named "drummer4god" at Knobbe.org's message board did, and you can download it here. Without his hard work, as well as the hard work of everyone at that board, a project like this would be impossible. So thanks, guys, and great work.
  • The emulator I'm using is FCE Ultra v2.0.3.
  • Props as well to Greg the Ex-'Burgher, for originally doing something like this three years ago, and for introducing me to the wonderful world of the TSB Repository in the first place. I don't know if that guy even blogs anymore, but he deserves some credit here.
  • This site and the Sportscenter Altar provided the super-dope NFL Primetime music you hear over the highlights.

Now sit down and watch these games, or I'll have to lurch your QB with Mike Golic. Don't think I won't do it.

I wonder if this version of the Tecmo Bowl emulator compensates for Andy Reid's 61% passing plays and Donovan McNabb's "Worm burners?"

On that note...can we seriously pay hommage to Jim Johnson...the Ravens and Steelers defenses have gotten tons of attention but the Eagles defense is ridiculously good right now. They're tackling en masse, they're all ballhawks, and they've kept the team in games where their offense was just outclasses Jim Johnson should be coach of the year...

I've always thought that Jim Johnson was an underrated defensive mind. Yeah, the Steelers and the Ravens may put up more all around stats, but they also have a whole lot of image that goes with them, and some super star players. The most notable player on the Philly D is an aging safety. The genus behind Johnson are those blitz schemes that he comes up with. I love the guts he has to run them, and just the creativity he shows in bringing pressure. I wish more DC's attacked the way he did.

Hey... that was not meant as a knock on him, just saying when you think of blizting defenses, the strong safety is not typically the lynch pin of that group.

He's a free safety

And JJ has been able to blitz a lot because of Dawkins play assisting CBs (and having good DBs in general)

And the FS certainly has proven to be the lynch pin of said group...JJ will miss him, though Quintin Mikell has play very well

I think Johnson gets the credit he deserves for his defense. Anyone that knows anything about football knows who he is and what he does defensively (not EXACTLY what he does defensively, but you know what I mean).

I think from a national media point, you're right

Its just that their defense looks very very good...and is the primary reason that team is in the playoffs

Yet people talk about McNabb, Westbrook and the offense. If Andy et al could manage half a game plan, not be so predictable and make halftime adjustments, they would have at least competed with the Giants for the division

damn it...

Offense tends to get more attention than defense. And you know how I feel about McNizabb.

JuT, have you seen anything from the NY Post today? The back page has "The Beast Is Back! Healthy Jacobs hungry to feast on Philly"

WFAN has been going on about how the giants will crush the eagles

whatever...NY sports media is all the same...

I don't really care

And the eagles have a top 5 run defense (#4 I think)

NY sports media is a product of concentrated and massive competition. In order to get readers the Post and Daily News try to be more ridiculous than the other. Silliest sports media in the country.

I would sit here and watch every single minute of these games, but...I have a life and the National Championship game is on right now, haha.

Don't feel bad, even I don't watch every single minute of them -- I just start the emulator and leave it running until it's finished.

Haha. I remember really enjoying the Nintendo Tecmo Football. If you had Bo Jackson, you were unstoppable. The Sega version was a bit over the top, but they limited things a bit. Not as much fun. No 800 yards rushing in Sega.
