They say anything can happen in the Field of 64 and that really is true in Be The Coach College Basketball. Even North Texas or Bucknell could end up cutting down the nets at the Final Four.

Be The Coach is a strategy solitaire basketball simulation game which puts you in the role of college basketball head coach. Choose from hundreds of colleges to lead. You've been given a five year contract to build a winner. Recruit from incoming high school stars and junior college transfers. Try out walk-ons and coach up your player's skills. Try and turn turn Diaper Dandies into All Americans who will lead your team to the promised land. Build a squad capable of competing for conference titles and national ranking. With planning and a little luck, you'll get an invitation to the Big Dance and maybe even a top seed. Hang on through six tough tournament games and claim a National Championship.

College Basketball season is right around the corner. Whet your appetite for NCAA hoops with this addictive simulation game. Your coaching career could span decades and get you in the Hall of Fame. But don't get the job done and you'll be back to watching Dick Vitale from your couch.

Nice simple game that could use some improvements (for example, playing at least 1 non-conference opponent in the regular season)....

I ran Oregon into the ground but with recruiting won the national title in my 5th year.

One suggestion I may have is to let the powerhouses be powerhouses.......how the heck is North Carolina out and Gardner Webb is in as a #1 seed?

Love the Andy Reid game, I won my first one 25-15 after being down 15-6.

I could weight the team strengths using this years RPI although there is something kind of amusing about Gardner Webb in the Final Four. Everybody loves a Cinderella story! But maybe I can do something a bit less helter-skelter with the tournament.

Might not be too hard to toss a couple of random non-conference games in at the beginning of the season. Make it a sixteen game regular season. Interesting idea. I'll see if I can figure it out.

Thanks for giving my game a try, SS!

College football would be nice, because you get 500 bowl games and fewer teams and a shorter schedule.

This is actually pretty cool, "Bobby Cremins" was finally able to mold Tech into a dynasty after a few down seasons... I do have to second SSR's suggestions about non-conference games and realistic powerhouses, though. It's just not right to be playing against Portland St. for the national championship (and to be an underdog!).

Bullshit! How did my Georgetown Hoyas end up the 60th seed in the field of 64 tourney when I was the Big East Conference Champs and had and 11-3 record?!?!

You used the back button didn't you?

Still, that's another thing worth pointing out.

No, I didn't during the regular season actually. But I did during the tournament. I was tired of getting bullshitted by the no-name top seeds. What is Lehigh and Elon doing as the first and second seeds in the Tourney?! I was a 13-point underdog against the number 8 seed (and I was the ninth seed). I lost the first game of the tournament every time, so I finally just used the back button to go on to win the whole thing twice in a row. ...Just some suggestions on how to improve the simulation game.

Hmmm ... anything is possible in a random draw but an 11-3 team that gets seeded 61 must not be very strong. The seeds are based on team power rating and there is a deduction for every loss. Think of it as conference or schedule strength.

Makes no sense though, why is the joke that is the MAC conference higher than the Pac-10?

Another suggestion.....how about player position? I'd like to know who is my guard or center....something like that?

I had a problem with seedings, too. Texas finished the season ranked #6 with a 13-1 record, but got the 34th overall seed in the tourney. What's up with that?

As for positions, SSR, I thought about that, too, but it would severely limit your recruiting.

What I would like to see is a "Play regular season" button next to play game. Also a "Complete tournament" button for when you get knocked out. I'd rather speed through the parts where not much is happening instead of clicking the mouse repeatedly.

Two other suggestions:

Like others, I would like to see at least some preference for the traditional powers--perhaps this could be done in recruiting. The big boys of basketball normally get the best recruits in real life, so shouldn't they get a bump in the simulation, too?

On the other hand, those players tend to leave early, too. What if the occasional blue chip underclassman bolted from your team early?

Also, what's up with you always being the last one in the tourney from your conference? Texas wins the Big 12 and is the only team to get in, even if OU is 12-2? That's odd.

I appreciate all the feedback!

It's interesting to me that so many of you would like to see the traditionally strong conferences better represented in the tournament. That's a change I can make fairly easily so I probably will.

The easiest cutoff for teams in your conference getting in the tournament was whether your team was in. After all, I could hardly have the fourth place conference team in the tournament without the first three. But didn't seem important to grab any teams that finish lower than yours. I probably could do that.

The suggestion about player positions is good but it adds a level of complexity to the programming that I'm not sure is worth it. Then I have to make sure you have enough centers and forwards and guards. And then I should probably add minutes and maybe even injuries.

I've also thought about players leaving school early and academic disqualifications - even rating players in academics. But that's probably in the future if the game gets popular enough.

If you're ranked sixth and end up seeded 34th, that means the Selection Committee was hating on you!

Since I was playing as Texas, I just attributed the seeding discrepancy to East Coast Bias. : )

I had a walk-on that was a All Conference player in his first year. He was rated like 7.5. If thats intended, then ok, but I'm guessing thats probably not supposed to happen.

Everyone feels that his team should go to the tournment. Most of you are too young to remember when it was only 64 teams in the tournment and one year the number two team in the country didn't get to go to the NCAA tournment. Does anyone know which team was number 1 and which was number 2. A hint here would be same league and that team (2) only lost 2 games both to the number one team. 24-2 and no tournment nothing nada zip....
