A weekly look at the HOTTEST people in sports!
A weekly look at the HOTTEST people in sports!

Since we already have a Friday Fryer for the biggest idiots in sports, I figured we could use a recap of some of the smokin' hottest people in sports. They can be on a hot streak, a big-game winner, being lusted after by other teams, whatever. They just gotta be SMOKIN' HOT!

Joe Mauer

Besides making one of the best, smartest, most athletic plays I have ever seen by a catcher, Mauer looks like he is hitting his prime right on schedule. Since returning from the disabled list, in 21 games and 77 ABs, he's hitting .429 with 9 home runs (he hit 9 all of last year) and 28 RBI, and toting a 1.360 OPS. Impressive. Not as impressive as this, though. Brett Gardner's face, meet Joe Mauer's glove...

LeBron James

It's Friday night, and my mom is in town. We're flipping between SportsCenter and a movie on the tv. I see the Cavs are down 2 with :01 on the clock on the BottomLine, so I decide to switch to TNT, just in case anything crazy happened. In fact, it did, and my mom literally goes, "Did that just happen? Was that live?" Yes, yes it was. At first I was unimpressed, I wasn't even sure it counted, but then, after seeing it hundreds of times, I'm impressed. The shot itself was very tough, but the context of it was what made it so great.

Helio Castroneves

So he wins the Indy 500 for the third time, which is quite an accomplishment on its own. But off the track, he had all remaining charges in his conspiracy and tax evasion case dropped (maximum sentence was 35 years). Quite a good week for the Brazilian who, on his best day, could be the happiest person on Earth. It's impossible not to smile when you see him happy.

San Diego Padres

They are here because they've won 9 in a row (but they're still 8 games back of the Dodgers), and somehow held on to one of the best pitchers in baseball. They're being led by Adrian Gonzalez, who's second in the National League in homers with 16 (but only 30 RBI, meaning the rest of the lineup kinda stinks) and Jake Peavy with 79 strikeouts to lead the NL (but only a 4-5 record, which also means the rest of the team isn't quite up to par). Peavy blocked a trade to the White Sox last week, wanting to play for a contender preferably in the NL. They probably still won't hang onto him, but for one week, the Padres will go down in history as being on the Smoker.

Joe Mauer... pulling off some Chase Utley, I see.

I don't care how good you are... a three-point buzzer beater with 1 second left against a team in the Conference Finals is just that amazing.

I was also impressed with what Kobe did in Game 2. With the Lakers down by 2, Kobe hit one of his own from behind the arc to put the Lakers up by 1, which practically sealed the deal with 'Melo fouled out, and Smith, Nene, and K-Mart all with 5 fouls. I must say the Lakers did a really good job of getting fouled; very smart. L.A. beat Denver with free throws. Kobe and Jackson knew that they were dealing with a phenomenal offensive squad, so they picked on their defense and battled them with their own offense... only they got fouled a lot more, which meant that Denver needed to pick up their offense. Unfortunately for them, they couldn't do it. They couldn't sink in many of their free throws, and Melo shot too many from beyond the arc. Not to mention anything about Trevor Ariza and his clutch steals in that game and game 1 to seal the two victories for L.A. so far. And also, Denver had won 9 in a row at home, so L.A. looks like they're coming back to their old unstoppable selves.

I'm not a car racing fan, but that's pretty impressive. Congrats to Helio Castroneves... for both on and off track situations.

How 'bout them Padres? After losing 6 in a row, they're doing as well as they did in the beginning of the season (which we all found very surprising). Before this season, they had not won more than 5 straight games since September 2007 (when they swept the Giants and Pirates... I'm sure those were pretty hard victories for them).

Scott Hairston has really picked it up, and he's probably the only offensive player besides Adrian Gonzalez (who everyone knows is worth every penny they're spending on him) who's doing even averagely well: .325 batting average, 5 homers, 19 RBI's.

There isn't one starter besides Gonzalez who is hitting over 4 homers, has 20+ RBI's, or (the big stat) over a .260 batting average. Pretty sad, if you ask me.

Heath Bell is probably the most underrated relief pitcher in the game today. 12 saves, 1 earned run in 18 appearances (0.49 ERA), over one strikeout per inning, and a 0.927 WHIP. Pretty sick!

As always, good stuff, Meg.

No. They win, they get in the Smoker next week. That would be a bit premature to put them in before they won the title.
