Success causing complacency in Red Sox Nation

The Boston Red Sox' season ended last night in Game 7 of the ALCS. The last time the Sox lost in a decided Game 7 of the Championship Series was back in 2003, the old Aaron Boone classic. For Sox fans, the feeling of watching Tim Wakefield giving up the gopher ball to Boone was the most painful sports moment... probably even worse than the Tim Duncan draft lottery, the Greg Oden/Kevin Durant draft lottery, and even the New England Patriots losing the Super Bowl last year with a chance for perfection. It was that bad. The team had come so close, but ultimately it was another year, (85 at the time, but I don't think anyone was counting, without a World Series title.)

So why did last night's loss not seem to bother the fans, players, and manager like it did just 5 years ago? 1 win away from the World Series. Is it as simple as the team had won twice the previous four years? Really? I guess maybe that's good enough for some. Don't get me wrong, there are fans out there who live and die with this team, and they're not worried about 2003, 2004, 2007, or even 2009, just this team right here and right now.

Terry Francona said, and I'm paraphrasing, that he has had the most fun he's ever had the past couple of months. Wow. I guess World Series rings in '04 and '07 weren't a good time. I think winning it again would have been fun, Tito.  Maybe that's just me. I don't know if this was a cheap shot at Manny Ramirez, by saying how enjoyable the past 2 months were, (the only 2 months Francona has managed the Sox without Manny). This goes back to my article "Sox Gave Away Manny," chemistry, getting alone, and having fun is important, but so is talent. The team made it further, I'll admit then I thought when they handed L.A. the division, and paid for it mind you, but still this was the defending World Series champions. Do you want to get along and have fun playing cards or win?  Theo and the crew made their decision.

In 2003, on October 17th, the day after, no Red Sox fan had a productive day. Even if you were able to make it to work or school you were simply in a daze. After 11 innings and having your heart ripped out your chest Temple of Doom style you just went through the motions the next day, at best.

Today? The day after yet another Game 7 loss in the ALCS? You hear things, "They were down 3-1," "4 ALCS’s in the past 6 years," "The future is bright (we'll access this point later on)," "Patriots play the Broncos tonight," "Celtics start next week," "The Sports Brief is the best sports blog out there." OK, not all of that is being said. I still feel that a combination of winning 2 World Series rings has taken away that killer instinct (not just the 2 championships for the Sox, but look at the entire sports town).

In this decade, the New England Patriots got the whole thing started and won 3 Super Bowls, the Boston Red Sox have won 2 World Series titles, the Boston Celtics just won the NBA title, and the Bruins still have a team, so I've been told. What comes from all of this? Mainly, spoiled fans. The New England fan base has changed tremendously in the past 7-8 years. Now everyone expects their teams to win, and if they don't, well look back at all the other trophies and banners. As Besse points out for a fan base that grew tired of losing and anxious for a World Series title, it's hard to believe that it's now growing tired of winning.

Is the excitement still there? As Jalbert pointed out in his "Old School Fenway" piece, it is, but you have to look for it. It's not there as much as before with all the corporate and front running fans. For die hard fans, it can be tough, but you have to block out all of those people who can seemingly bring your experience down. Don't forget, winning championships, despite the recent trend is not easy. My grandfather has still seen the Sox win as many times as I have. Don't take the success of these teams for granted. Remember, it wasn't that long ago when I was writing letters to the Patriots to start Scott Zolak because he actually won a game.

The 2008 baseball season is over for the Sox, we'll let it marinate for just a little bit. But here comes the off season. And this isn't an off season coming of a World Series title, where you have to debate on whether you even need a guy like Johan Santana. No, this will be different. Health, free agents, trades, will be more important this time around. And don't look now, but the American League champs just got better last night, during the game... David Price is here to stay.

Do you want to see people jumping off bridges? Would that be the "killer instinct"? Do you want them to come in here and complain about the umps or say "BJ Upton sux!"? From what I've seen the loss has been taken maturely compared to losses when the Sox were "cursed". It's almost as if fans are acting like they've been there before. Interesting... It seems to me like if Boston fans are the "most" anything in sports, it's most criticized.

Oh boy, here comes the "Boston gets a hard time" schtick.

Larry King said on ESPN one time that if he got near the Brooklyn Bridge after "THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT!!!!!!!!!", he would've jumped. ;-)

Oh boy, here comes the "SSR spits out a beaten response" schtick. I don't actually give a shit, it's really just funny to me how much Boston sports fans are hated. It's like the games don't even matter anymore, it's all about how the fans react.

Honestly, we just can't win here. If we take last night's loss too hard, then we're spoiled fans who should chill out and enjoy all of the recent championships this decade... Meanwhile, if we stay calm and appreciate this season for what it was -- win or lose -- then we're not taking the loss hard enough, and we're spoiled fans who have "gotten tired of winning". So what are we supposed to do, exactly? Like Bobbyjim said, at this point people are just looking for an excuse to criticize.

That was exactly my point, Davis. It doesn't matter what we do. I'd much rather focus on the games though. I've never understood judging fan bases because they're all so broad. Except for Yankees fans, they're all assholes.

Seriously Bobby, if you can't see that Boston fans and their Bandwagon didn't do it to themselves, you're just as bad as the rest.

Don't give me the "Woe is us, no one likes us" routine. Because as soon as you guys got a little taste of victory, you DIDN'T act like you were there before. Boston sports fans (and their bandwagon) stuck it down our throats like no other.

Now that the dynasties are coming to an end (Brady hurt and the Pats look like no playoffs + Rays > Sox) it's "oh everyone hates us, why do they hate us so much? We're so criticized.

At least I can genuinely hate New York fans for their faults, but according to Boston fans, their are no faults, only pointed fingers. Another symptom of Boston Elitism.

Now Bobby, understand that I'm not pegging you as "one of them" but simply using you as the example because you opened your mouth first. Unless you REALLY DO think that everyone hates Boston fans at it's at no fault of the Boston Fans, because that's facking crap in my book.

That should be DID this to themselves not didn't. I put the negative in two different places and for that I deserve this fanbox:

LA, I understand that Boston fans brought this on themselves. I agree with that because after the Boston sports teams hibernation, once the teams finally started winning, we came out loud and obnoxious, not to mention the millions of bandwagon fans who didn't know anything about sports. I'm sure that all came off as quite annoying to the rest of "sports nation".

However, it's gotten to the point where hatred for Boston sports fans has transcended even the games themselves. It's as if so many people care more about the suffering of Boston fans, between the Brady injury and the loss to the Rays that they overlook the fact that the whole NFL season is still left or that it was a great ALCS. I've seen more articles bashing Boston and their sports fans than articles about the actual series. It's funny to me how no matter what Boston fans do now, they get criticized. I just don't understand why the haters take it to that level.

Granted, I don't like the Yankees either or many of their fans (ok, maybe that was a cheap shot, KD), but I care a lot more about sports than about stupid fans who I wouldn't waste my energy complaining about in an article.

You get used to people stereotyping your fanbase bobby...

doesn't bother me one bit...

When the Flyers, Sixers and Eagles made their respective championship scenarios in the past 10 (or in the flyers case, 11) years, there's typically a flood of that crap...

get used to it

New England fans have been spoiled, but I think the true fans are reacting the way every other fan for any other team would act. www.sammmonroe.com this is what I wrote on my blog this morning when I got up, not exactly armchair material, but just how i feel about my teams, and i think a lot of people would say the same.

I think the main point is you should always want your team to win, and when they're that close it better be a big deal. You never know when the team you root for will be back to the ALCS/NLCS, NBA Finals, AFC Championship, whatever it is. Don't shrug it off cause you've won before. I think everyone gets upset with bangwagon fans, but that's just what comes with success. They get to enjoy all the winning, but don't suffer in the losing.

Yeah, I agree with that opinion, it should definitely always matter, but the Red Sox losing this year is not as painful as it was in 2003. That's the bottom line. 2003 was just a feeling of, "holy shit, we are never going to win". We always want our teams to win, and it is certainly a big deal if they lose, especially after coming so close. The Super Bowl was one of the worst moments of my life. However, as far as the Sox go, it's not as big of a deal as it was when it seemed like the Red Sox were doing a life sentence of misery and losing.
