Strategically Simulating the 2008 World Series

If you're a hardcore baseball fan, the odds are (no pun intended) that you've played a "simulation" of the sport. Some folks play homemade dice baseball or Strat-O-Matic, while some computer-savvy fans get into OOTP or Baseball Mogul... But if you're looking for a fun, free, easy-to-use baseball simulation program, you can't go wrong with the Strategic Baseball Simulator, which uses players' real-life stats to simulate every plate appearance of a game (you can read about how it works here). In preparation for the upcoming Rays-Phils World Series, I'm going to simulate the games in SBS the same way I simulated the NFL Playoffs using Tecmo last January. Click the links for the box score and scorecard from each game, or just skip down to see who ended up winning our simulated 2008 World Series. Enjoy!

2008 SBS World Series: Cumulative Stats

162-Game Sim

Okay, so that was fun, but it was also a mere 5-game sample. Are the Phils really the better team? Well, another neat feature of SBS is its "Two Team Multi-Game Mode," which is pretty self-explanatory: you can sim 2 teams head-to-head in as many games as possible. Here are the results for 162 Tampa Bay-Philly matchups, with 81 home games for each team:

Team W L Pct RS RA
08 Tampa Bay 72 90 .444 713 774
08 Philadelp 90 72 .556 774 713

For the full stats of the 162-game sim, click here.

So, there you have it -- the venerable Strategic Baseball Simulator has spoken, and it says that the Philadelphia Phillies will win the 2008 World Series in approximately 5 games. Of course, on the other side of the ledger is an epic pro-sports title drought, a Rays squad that the stats and the bookmakers say is superior, and the fact that worst-to-first Tampa feels like a team of destiny. But I guess that's why they play the games... in fact, don't be surprised if this series requires the full 7 games to decide a champion. One thing's for sure, though: it's going to be the most entertaining World Series in years.

Davis does it again. I have SBS on my computer but don't use it much, don't find it as entertaining as Strat..maybe I need to go look at it again, might have missed some things in the download process. 214 strikeouts for Pena, 235 for Jayson Werth, and 236 for the Big Whiff...

I like the simplicity of it, it's easy to hack in a million different ways because it's so straightforward in its programming. The sim quality may not be as good as some of the higher-end (read: not free) programs -- do I really think Philly is that much better than Tampa, or better at all? -- but the results do come from the numbers and are adjusted for park and league, so it's not that unrealistic. Plus, if you look around the SBS site & some of the fan sites, you can download a data file for just about every team in MLB history. And the best part is that it's FREE! You really can't beat that price.

mmm hmm... Now do the same thing with the Rays and Red Sox and Phillies and Dodgers as a "baseline"... you know... just to see what happens.

It's going to be PRETTY hard for Troy Percival to lose Game 4, since he won't be on the roster in the World Series.

Yeah, the downside to using the "computer manager" is that he picks from the pool of players who played for the team all year long...

I agree with Manny. Simulating the ALCS and the NLCS will establish a baseline for simulator accuracy.

Good news for the Rays fans out there, SBS incorrectly predicted both the NLCS and ALCS. Of course, as was true in the WS sim, the rosters weren't exactly correct as of the time the series were played (Percival is TB's closer, Price didn't even play, Manny Ramirez is on both the Dodgers and Red Sox, etc.). If I weren't so lazy, I'd fix these flaws... but we all know that's not going to happen. Anyway, despite SBS's correct Game 1 prediction of a 1-run PHI win, Tampa can take solace in the fact that SBS said they shouldn't even be playing right now...

Just curious, because I'm doing something similar on Whatifsports just for fun.

If the AL team's game is being played at home, does the designated hitter rule apply to both teams under AL rules? And vice versa for the pitcher batting 9th when it's played at the NL team's home.

Great stuff!

Davis, if you simulate the full season, do you end up with Tampa Bay and Philadelphia in the World Series?

Probably not: see above, it says the Red Sox and Dodgers should be playing right now (although the rosters aren't exactly current for any of the teams).

While SBS hasn't been right about the scores (or the rosters, for that matter), it's nailed the outcomes so far. Will we see Philly phinish off the Rays in Game 5? And, more to the point, is a free computer baseball simulator the only one who saw this coming? (besides Phillies fans, that is)
