Steelers Lose to Big Blue - Oh Snap!

What the heck is going on with the Steelers? It's hard to tell from one week to the next if you're going to get the good Steelers team or the Evil Twin Brother.

In a showdown of 5-1 teams, the Steelers again came up short against a team that is, in my humble opinion, no better than the Steelers. In fact, I'd even go as far as saying that the Steelers are better than the Jints.

After all, en route to their 5-1 record, the Jints fattened up on underachieving teams such as the Rams, Seahawks, Bangles (oops Bengals) and San Francisco (combined record: 6-24). They lost to Cleveland (3-4). They looked ripe for the picking.

Meanwhile, the Black & Gold scored nice wins over Baltimore and Jacksonville, and a blowout win over Cincinnati. I figured the Steelers should be able to take it to the Giants. I've not been convinced that Big Blue was really a good team, and this seemed like a great chance for that to be proven.

After some great defensive stops, and two challenges, in the first quarter, the Stillers seemed to have things under control. Clearly, they were not dominating or anything like that, but after they took a 14-9 lead in the third quarter, they seemed well on their way to the win.

The defense was holding the Giants to field goals, despite the good field position the Giants enjoyed most of the game. Note to Pittsburgh (and any team, really): If you give a team enough chances, they're going to break out.

Sadly, the offense did little worth noting. Ben Roethlisberger's 4 interceptions and his exasperating habit of holding the ball too damn long and getting sacked didn't help. They just struggled to get into any kid of rhythm.

In Big Ben's defense, his O-line has been a swinging gate for certain games this season (notably, the NFC East matchups), and it is difficult to set up for the pass when you're on your back or running for your life.

However, that line was good enough to give him time to connect for a 65-yard TD to Nate Washington in the third quarter and also good enough to provide running lanes for Mwelde Moore's 84 yards and a 32-yard TD in the first quarter. It should have also been sufficient for the Steelers to actually gain a yard in the last two minutes of the game.

And don't even get me started about missed opportunities like the Washington TD nullified by a penalty or the errant snap that effectively killed the Steelers mojo. Dumb setbacks like that are part of the game and teams should be able to overcome these things.

To be sure, a 6-2 record is nothing to sneeze at. They're in fine shape in their division, and it would take a monumental collapse for them to be kicked out of the driver's seat in the AFC North. One can only hope that the Steelers will figure some things out to prevent this from even becoming a concern.

Next week they face another NFC East team in the Redskins. Then the Cowboys complete the NFC East swing in early December. I, for one, will be glad the Steelers are done with the NFC.

I know it's tough. I think the Steelers are tough as well. I simply don't think they should have lost to the Eagles or Giants. Saving grace is that they're both non-conference games.

I forgot about this game quickly though, the minute Ryan Howard launched that opposite field homer we've been waiting for. So close now...

The Rams might have something to say about that.

I think there are some serious coaching deficiencies on the Steelers. This was highlighted, this week, by the fact that the Stillers apparently had no back long snapper. Now, I understand that teams don't carry a backup for that position, but someone on the team should be prepared in case of an emergency such as the one this week.

Another thing I see coaching-wise is a holdover from the Cowher era. The Steelers seem to play down to the level of their opponent. Now I'm not saying the Giants are in this case, but if the Steelers had played any kind of solid, consistent game, that botched snap would not even be an issue.

I've always wondered where the killer instinct is. It's frustrating watching the Steelers when they play games like the ones against the Eagles (sorry Jut), Browns and Giants. These were all winnable games, and in the case of the Browns, they should have smoked 'em.

How can they be so focused and driven in games against the Texans, Ravens and Jags and be so disorganized in the aforementioned games? I know that the Texans and Ravens are not the greatest teams in the world, but they're no pushovers. If the Steelers had played that type of game yesterday, the Giants would be 0-2 against the AFC North and the NFC North would be a whole lot more interesting.

I mean I was rooting for the Steelers, but frankly the Giants look very very good right now...

The o-line blows (Eagles proved that), they were short a receiver (moss) and the defense collapsed in the clutch

The eagles seem to be the enigma of 08. I'd say they are capable of beating the best team in the league (let's say titans or giants for now) and losing to the worst (bungles or lions i guess)...

Thing is, I look at the steelers...y'all haven't beaten anyone impressive...Texans? Browns? Bengals? The Ravens are playing way above and the Jags seem to be a total mess compared to last year.

This year's NFL is confusing as all hell. I can't tell who's a great team by any measure. Titans? Really? Giants - I mean does anyone feel comfortable saying that?

I agree with ya, Jut. Although what you say about the Eagles, I think applies to the Steelers. They could have beaten both the Eagles and Giants, but their O-line killed 'em. They held both teams in check offensively.

Both teams have won the games they should have won - with an exception or two - and neither team seems capable of being consistent from week to week.

I am more willing to give the Titans the title of NFC's best than I am saying that about the Giants. They've both played a similar caliber of teams and the Titans are one game better.

This really is a tough season to figure out. I'm glad I gave up picking football games years ago. I'd be at a loss in 2008.

I felt bad for the guy, so I left it alone. It's interesting (and kind of a shame) that there could be an appropos reference to that guy.

The AFC is just not as strong as the NFC. The Steelers are top 3 in the AFC, but they will go 0-4 against the NFC East.

The Steelers will go 2-2 against the NFC east and very well could be 2-0 right now. The Steelers kept the Eagles and Giants offenses in check and were very well in both of those games.

Totally agree. This idea that the NFC is markedly better is nonsense. Which conference has the only undefeated team?

Wow, 7 sacks and JC's first two interceptions. Clinton Portis was held to 51 yards. Looks to me like the Steelers can hang with anyone this year, even if they are from the supposedly dominant NFC east.

Here's the thing. Folks will know the NFC is not superior when an AFC team wins the Super Bowl.

Also, since March so many folks who felt like saying something were telling me how the American League was so much better than the National League and that it didn't matter who the NL sent to the World Series because the NL team would get smoked. Well, that turned out a little differently, didn't it?

I said it before, and I'll say it now. It's nonsense to say that the NFC is better than the AFC. The AFC has the only undefeated team. And the best team in the NFC lost to a lame AFC team, struggled against an even more lame AFC team and should have lost to a third AFC team that was hobbled by injuries - and without a top shelf receiver.

Nice win by the Steelers, huh SteelTown and BehBigBen?

Looked ugly at the start. The skins went up 6-0 and they hadn't even earned a first down yet. But the Steelers AWESOME defense held in there long enough for the offense to come together.

Leftwich looked pretty comfortable in there. Maybe the Steelers should just play him and let Ben recuperate? Especially now that Parker is back, they might be able to get a few wins and get healthy at the same time.

Gee maybe that's because the AFC is weak. Therefore Tenn is beating lousy teams. Indy was also beateb by the 3-3 Bears so...

The Giants lost to the Browns. The Cowgirls and Skins lost to the Rams. Outside of the supposedly dominant NFC east is there another team to be feared? You claim the NFC is so dominant, but I don't see it. There is too much parity in the league this year to pick a clear cut favorite team, let alone conference.
