There are some things about sports I don't like... the New Yuck Muts, the University of Michigan and those ASSCRACK UGLY HELMETS, the Floridamn Gayturds and the Miami Crimicanes. I also think that NASCRAP and professional wrestling are a HUGE waste of air time on television and would rather watch women's Jello wrestling!

Stanley Cup Playoffs - Round 2

Round 2 of the quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup begins Thursday. 6 of the eight teams I picked in the first round won, while the defending Cup champs were sent home packing. We begin Round 2 Thursday night. Some of the games can be seen on Versus, CBC, RDS, TSN and NBC. Check your local listings. (If you happen to live in Houston and can't get Versus, go to a place on Smith Street called the Maple Leaf Pub. It's in downtown Houston.)

Eastern Conference Semifinals

Philadelphia vs. Montreal

Both teams are coming off seven-game series which saw some stellar hockey played by both squads. The Canadiens swept the season series with the Flyers but you can throw that record out. This time, it’s a pair of two teams that want the same thing. Philadelphia will have to skate smarter than they did against Washington, especially in last Saturday’s game, where they only got off one shot in 15 minutes of play. Montreal took Boston to a game seven, where they took apart Boston like a cheap watch. It may be one of the better semifinal series in the East. It’s going to go seven and fans in Montreal will be singing “ O Canada!” to their hearts content. Going with the Canadiens in 7.

Pittsburgh vs. New York Rangers

The Penguins are well rested after their sweep of Ottawa and will have some work to do against a tough Ranger club that beat up New Jersey pretty good. New York won the season series with the flightless birds but this time, it’s for all the marbles. It’s for the right to have a chance to lift Lord Stanley’s Cup. Penguins in 6.

Western Conference Semifinals

Colorado vs. Detroit

Hope Colorado likes squid. The Red Wings won the season series with Colorado. Not to take anything away from Colorado but they did struggle a bit with Minnesota. Nashville wasn’t an easy undertaking for the Red Wings but they got through it in fine fashion, taking down the Atlanta wanna-bes. Chris Osgood and the boys from Motor City better have their A games in their bags. Going with Detroit in 7.

San Jose vs. Dallas

Dallas and San Jose split the season series down the middle. Dallas looked like they were struggling against Anaheim until they came home and shut down the defending champs. Meanwhile, San Jose was taken to a game seven by a tougher Calgary squad than I thought. Dallas may have a few days rest under their belts and this time, they’re going to need it. San Jose came ready to play in game seven against the Flames and will look to take the boys from Big D down a peg or two. Going with the Sharks in 6.

What do you mean Dallas looked like they were struggling with Anaheim until they came home? They opened the series 2-0 on the road!

And they weren't even close. Combined score in those two games: 9-2.

They actually looked like they were struggling from my point of view. Anaheim looked a lot faster than I thought.

If you see 9-2 as struggling, then I question your perspective.

I wanna see Philly and Pittsburgh in the conference championship. A cross state battle royal for the opportunity to go to the cup. Here's to hoping.

That would be nice ST, but I have a feeling that the Flightless Ones will be facing Les Bleu-Blanc-et-Rouge.

I hate the Flyers more than the Devils, so I want the pleasure of seeing the Pens knock them out of the playoffs.

Philly and Montreal got a raw deal. They both played 7 game series' and they have to play again on Thursday while the Pens and Rangers who have been resting all along get another day's rest. WTF I have to wait another day for Pens hockey.

Of course the Avalanche struggled with the Wild because Colorado was the #6 seed! The Wild won their division, the Avalanche did not.

I'm just glad to see Colorado & Detroit going at it in the playoffs again... That used to be one of the best rivalries ever.

The East is very interesting all of a sudden. The Penguins have the two best players remaining int he playoffs in Malkin and Crosby. The Rangers have the best Goalie in Lundqvist who merely outplayed the GOAT in the 1st round. Meanwhile the Canadiens were the best team in the regular season but have a 20 year old goalie and barely escaped the 1st round. Top to bottom you'd have to be surprised the Flyers made it this far but they most certainly can beat Montreal.

If MAF can match or be near Lundqvist I see Penguins in 5. Rangers will be coming off of high in beating NJ and I don't think they can expect to get the same production out of guys like Avery, Callahan and Dawes.

The Flyers/Montreal series pits 2 tired teams against each other. I see another 7 game series with MTL coming out on top.

I know a bunch of people who will be happy with this, as I see Pitt representing the East in the Stanley Cup (but losing to a much better Western Conference team).

In case you're wondering, the CBC will have the rights to the Eastern Conference matchups this year, while TSN have the rights to the West.

So...

As a flyers fan, I'm elated...it shouldn't have taken this long to beat washington...

Regardless, they're ahead of what many expect and about where i expected (the 2nd round)...

As a hockey fan:

You've got this going for you: Philly, NY, Montreal, Colorado and Detroit...all top notch hockey markets with history (Colorado being the shortest, but denver loves hockey)...

Pittsburgh to a lesser degree, but they've got arguably the best player on the planet...

So San Jose/Dallas can't make it to the finals and Hockey will take a step forward for once...

Boy are you guys underestimating the Rangers. Defense defeats offense, hands down. If New York plays the kind of defense they showed in their three wins at New Jersey, they can defeat the Penguins. And that doesn't count the two fluke goals that the Devils scored in Game 5.

But you underestimate the often disregarded Pens defense. This is not the same unit as last year.

I don't think the Devil's represented a real test. If anything, the fact that the Rangers gave up so many goals to the second lowest socring team in the league suggests that the defense is not that good, especially with how well Lundqvist had to play to secure those wins. The Pens are the opposite of the Devils. They are a dynamic offensive force.

I loved the Flyers/Caps series, fun to watch. I think the Flyers are in for another long one with Montreal. I'm intrigued to see how Avery tries to get after Pittsburgh, but I think the Pens will keep rolling. Detroit and the Avs conjures up memories of Roy, McCarty, Lemieux...I hope this series is as good. And I actually care about the Sharks/Stars being an SF resident who grew up in MN (with Modano). Hate that the Wild are out, but can't wait to see how Rd 2 goes...
