Spygate: A Scandal in Ten Limericks

There are too many questions that we will never know the answer to--how the tapes were used, how many wins or losses would have happened if the New England Patriots weren't spying, how the Super Bowls may have been affected--but commissioner Roger Goodell feels as though further investigation would not produce any more significant information about the scandal. Instead of me rambling on about how it may taint the legacy but it will not take away the unadulterated joy the Patriots have brought me, I present a series of limericks describing Spygate.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2007: PATS BEAT NEW YORK JETS 38-14

It was the first game of the year
And the Pats game plan was very clear.
Throwing to Randy Moss
Led to a Jets loss,
And a league-wide sense of fear.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2007: NFL OFFICIALS CONFISCATE VIDEO CAMERA OF PATRIOTS' EMPLOYEE

The league found it very suspicious.
But the media found it delicious
That a such a great team
Could spy, cheat and scheme
With a history so auspicious.

SEPTEMBER 13, 2007: GOODELL PUNISHES, PATS TURN OVER TAPES

The commish laid down the hammer
And put Coach in a virtual slammer.
So they gave up each tape
And tried to escape
The scandal that tarnished their glamor.

SEPTEMBER 22, 2007: TAPES ARE DESTROYED

Goodell reviewed all the evidence
And found it to be of no relevance.
So he destroyed it all,
Hoped the curtain would fall,
And not much has happened since.

NOVEMBER 15, 2007: ARLEN SPECTER WRITES A LETTER OF CONCERN TO GOODELL

But a Senator from P-A
Found the tape destruction not okay.
A big fan of the Eagles,
He thought the actions illegal
May have taken Philly's title away.

FEBRUARY 1-2, 2008: MATT WALSH AND THE RUMORED RAMS WALK-THROUGH

And then before Super Bowl Sunday
An ex-Pat with info to relay
Came to the forefront.
Yet was perpetually blunt
And refused to have anything to say.

To add fuel to the Super fire
Came an accusation down to the wire.
A past Super Bowl win
May not be genuine
And the Pats problems became more dire.

MAY 12, 2008: GOODELL MEETS WITH WALSH

Roger met Matt in New York City,
And they talked a while in committee.
With lots of tapes to show,
To the media they go,
Although the footage is boring and gritty.

Goodell says there's nothing to add
To the sports media's favorite fad.
The Pats made a mistake
And caused many headaches
But more digging would drive the league mad.

So the case is almost closed
But there are still questions posed.
Is the dynasty tainted?
How will it be painted?
In the end, the Pats are exposed.

News flash, sports fans...EVERYBODY VIDEO TAPES!! I'm not shocked someone got caught, I'm shocked it took so long.

I'd like to think the Pats are not the only ones. I mean, everyone breaks down film. They just had a different, more devious system of it.

Not to say they weren't wrong, because they were. They broke league rules, they got punished, and they STILL won 18 games in 2007.

"EVERYBODY VIDEO TAPES" Could we please refrain from saying this until someone, ANYONE, has some sort of proof. This incedent wasn't just filming. They had a camera man on the opposing teams sidelines FILMING THE FACKING COACHES. (Insert tired baseball analogy here). This is akin to sending a cameraman into the opposing teams dugout. I have to give it to BB. He must have a giant pair to keep a strait face while claiming he didn't realize you can't stand on the opposing teams sidelines and film the coaches.

Just to be clear, the cameraman's CAMERA was focused on the other team's sideline, he wasn't actually on the other team's sideline. How could he film coaching signals if he's on the same side of the field as the coaches?

Wow, a picture of an unidentified man with a camera on someone's sideline in Giants Stadium, with the camera pointed at the end zone for some reason.

Well...the closest endzone is to his back, and it's not the only picture of this occuring. I suppose your right though, we should believe your completely unsubstantiated claim that he wasn't caught on the jets sideline.

And it must be a coincedence that the Jets are on defense and it appears as though the unidentified man is filming the Jets coaches. BTW, this is the first picture in an images search of Matt Estrella and I know that doesn't make it 100% certain.

Also, notice the other camera men are wearing Red to identify themselves. I wonder why the man in question isn't. Probably just another coincidence.

Steel Town, you might be right about where the cameraman is. But all I've ever heard from official news sources is that the cameraman was on the Patriots' sideline. So in order for me to change that notion, I need proof. Stipulation and some image from a Red Sox blog (which funnily enough states in the post this image appears in: "Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella was stationed on the New England sideline when he was approached by league security officials") is insufficient. If you can back-up your claims with something solid and reliable, I'll believe you.

There are some Belichick proteges out there - in NY, Cleveland... And I thought I'd heard that the Lions tried to do the tape thing, but Millen brought them 'The Notebook' instead. Clever riff on this tired story, Meg. Well played.

There once was a coach they called Bill.

To whom cheating was quite a thrill. The public cried "Cheat!" The Commish said "Let's meet." To which Bill said "Kiss my ass. I'm Bill Belichick and I'll do whatever the hell I want and guess what? My team has the easiest strength-of-schedule next season at .371 so we should basically walk to next year's Super Bowl so screw you and the rest of the NFL."

I love limericks.
