Welcome to Manny Stiles FORMER Daily Weekday Column:

"Sportsune Cookie" - Stiles is... busy, please leave your message at the beep...

It's Monday, as the rest of the world this is half-assed of the usual half-ass attempts...

Warning: Read the following at your own risk. Possible Probable side effects include eye strain, brain scratching, and a probable cause of stupidity...

Today's Weather: 5% usefulness, 20% napping, 99% case of the Mondays...

Sportsune Cookie

A comment left on last week's cookie asked, "What is this "it" I speak of?" Well, let's examine it and find out what it really has to do with it...

Well, according to dictionary.com to "have it" (informally) means "to possess the requisite abilities for something; be talented, adept, or proficient: In this business you either have it or you don't." Using this definition, it is clear that having "it" means being able to do something efficiently and successfully or in some way showing the tools or ability to do something means that someone possesses "it" in some fashion...

Also, if I tag you then you are "it" as well...

Preemptive Maneuvers

Loooongg-oria

Evan Longoria is batting .481 on the season through six games. Oh yeah, he also has a league-leading five home runs! A few seasons ago, an article was published with the 25 best players under the age of 25; Longoria was the only player on the list who was still in the minor leagues. Living up to the hype? As Boobie Miles once said, "Now hype is something that's not for real." E-Long falls into that category...

Yooouukk-ilis, Cabrera, Bonifacio, TheRiot

Kevin Youkilis, Emilio Bonifacio, Ryan Theriot, and Miguel Cabrera are all batting over .500 so far this season. Over under that they can keep it up all season? Forget that nobody hasn't hit over .400 since Ted Williams. When did someone hit over .500 for an entire season? We could be seeing history in the mak... almost finished it without laughing. Yes, I'm that lame...

Hot Tub

How much are is it going to cost to get in the hot tub during the 2011 Home Run Derby? After the poor showing of Arizona fans during previous playoff seasons, the question arises, "Do Arizona fans even deserve the mid-summer classic?" Five bucks says that it doesn't even sell-out...

Post-emptive Maneuvers

Nothing again today...

What's up with Romi fixing everyone else's articles for little mistakes and not the cookies?

Four Outs in Baseball

The fourth out rule was used in baseball the other day. An interesting feat...

Fantasy Break

With week one wrapping up in fantasy baseball head-to-head leagues, some are wondering if their draft "sleepers" and "gambles" are going to pay off. Others are taking advantage of players starting the season hot. For those of you wondering stand, hit, or double-down, remember this, "It's not a sprint but a marathon." Then again, if you can sprint the entire way...

"It's not how you begin, but how you finish..."

The Adventures of ManRays

Today's "Ray of the Day" is Big Game James...

Shields tossed seven scoreless against the rival Baltimore Orioles. Surrendering only three hits and one walk all day long. After a rocky season opener against the Red Sox, James bounced back, showing his stuff still as good as expected...

Honorable Mention: Evan Longoria...

Five home runs on the season now for Longoria after belting an eight inning solo to left field. E-Long has been on a tear this season, batting .481 and picking up for teammates such as Carlos Pena and Pat Burrell who are off to slow starts...

On Deck - The New York Yankees are in Tampa for the Rays season home opener. After an eleven to three rout of the Orioles, the Rays carry some momentum into Monday night's game. Scott Kazmir gets the start facing Chien-Ming Wang. The two are night and day so far early this season. Wang has faced some turmoil in his first start while Kazmir seems to be starting on a roll...

Go Rays!

10

Nobody guessed last week's "10" (as expected because it was stupid and lazy)... In case anyone cares, it was the top ten fantasy hockey producers of 2008-09...

More like 11, but it's whatever...
Cincinati Reds
Arizona Diamondbacks
Texas Rangers
Florida Marlins
St. Louis Cardinals
Baltimore Orioles
Houston Astros
Toronto Blue Jays
San Diego Padres
Minnesota Twins
Los Angeles Angels

A Picture is worth 1000 Words of Profanity

The Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox got in a squabble on Sunday. Four Angels showered early...

(Fergie - Glamarous beat) E-L-O-N...G-L-ORIO-U-S... he's a frickin' stud! I only have good things to say about him.

Why, thank you for enlightening me on what "it" is. But it's not business... we're talking about baseball, aren't we?

Imagine if Youkilis hits .500. He'll have an ego big enough to match with his big head. (I don't believe for a fact that Kevin Mench's head is bigger than Cueballis').

Didn't Curt Schilling hit .500 in '07?

"What's up with Romi fixing everyone else's articles for little mistakes and not the cookies?"
Huh? What are you talking about? ;)
Seriously though, I've put the editing thing to a pretty small maximum now that I've been trying to catch up with.

The four out rule AND a triple play? Nice!

Fantasy baseball: Anyone interested in trading?

What if WHAT didn't exist!? How could you even SAY that, FALCON02520!? (Yes, I'm using your former name... your FULL name... I'm that pissed...) *sees the SSR comment* Oh yeah... I'm not mad at you anymore, Dandrew. Sorry I overreacted.

My 5 are Hassan Adams (representin' the Arab names), Malik Rose, Kwame Brown, and Michael Olowokandi... and KOBE! Apparently, it doesn't matter who's on Kobe's team when he's on the floor. I'd just like to prove them wrong. (Sorry to the Lakers fans who had to read that... but I'm a stuck up Celtics fan... what can I say?)

I have Chien-Ming Wang on my fantasy team. I'm thinking on putting him on the bench. I'm afraid... very afraid...

The 10 (or 11) is a list of baseball teams... (no SHIT, Sherlock!) I'm heading to class in about a 1/2 hour, so I'll think about it later.

Josh Beckett is probably my least favorite Red Sox player, not only for what he did yesterday... but because of the attitude he has for the game. I appreciate what he does on the mound for the Sawx (when he's on the mound and not complaining about his injury), but he's stuck up and has a really bad attitude. It really looked like he was aiming for Abreu's head on that pitch. And four Angels who stood up for Abreu got ejected. Abreu didn't and BECKETT didn't. I was actually pissed that Beckett didn't get ejected. Get penalized for doing something ethically incorrect on purpose.

Major League Baseball is a business Romi... sorry to say it though

Schilling did hit .500, but he was just a few at bats short of qualifying for a batting title...

Four outs, three outs, odd day in baseball...

Romi, you always are interested in trading... but we'll talk about some things...

Haha, someone said it to me over the weekend... my jaw dropped and I said, "fack you for predicting the worst thing I could ever imagine..."

I'm suprised you didn't pick the Celtics starting roster... haha

I'd recommend putting Wang on the bench in the AGM league but not in the Show league...

Beckett should have been ejected, you are correct...

I'll say it for Manny now, "Nobody could ever know how Stiles feels or what goes on in that head..."

Thanks Romi...

It may be a business, but that's the only reason why I dislike the MLB. It's a great sport, but when players and teams and owners and managers think of it as a business, it sucks. Ever realize that? I wish we could travel back in time to the 19th century to see how it was back then.

You're missing the point though, Dand: if he can do it, anyone can.

I'm not that cocky about my team, am I? Does it really show? Plus, most of the starting roster is getting old anyway.

I like the idea about Wang. However, I'm not going to take your advice just in case he does really well. I'd much rather feel stupid for keeping him on the roster and him having a lousy game than if I put him on the bench and he miraculously had a great game. He's on my team for a reason.

GRRRRRRRRRR... BECKETT!!!!

I wasn't talking about what goes on through Stiles' head. I was talking about how his fingers feel after typing a long ass comment. ;P

OK. You caught me. I love trading. Look where it got me yesterday though. Can you blame me? I made quite the comeback until I blew it in the very end.

True, but you also played with 15% concentrated power of will, and (somewhere along the lines) 50% pain. No offense to you anti-Yankee fans, but unless it's because of my fantasy baseball team, I'd love to see Chien-Ming Wing fack up... and if he doesn't fack up, it hurts.

... It really does.

"I was actually pissed that Beckett didn't get ejected. Get penalized for doing something ethically incorrect on purpose."

Well, considering Beckett wasn't throwing at Abreu might have something to do with it.

Calling a timeout while the pitcher is in his windup is a no-no, Beckett was sending a message to the umpire, not Abreu. It was probably a little closer to him than Beckett wanted, so I understand his Abreu's reaction, but the umpire knew who it was intended for, which is why neither were ejected.

Thanks for your input AF. However, we're still going to have to disagree with each other on this issue.

Regardless of whether Beckett was throwing at Abreu or the umpire, that was just a childish move on Beckett's part. If he's aiming for anything else besides V-Tek's glove, he deserves to be ejected IMO.

I can understand why neither of the players were ejected now from Blue's perspective, but disputes like that just don't need to be taken place on an MLB field IMO.

Judging intent on Beckett's not-a-pitch pitch is impossible. Blame the ump for allowing the late timeout (I hate that, why can't baseball impose limits on timeouts like every other sport?). Blame Abreau for being a baby and throwing a hissy fit about it like almost EVERY hitter these days after a ball comes near them.

But Beckett leaving the mound to go to the plate is just the same as a batter walking to the mound, and should have been an ejection. Totally uncalled for.

Well to be honest, I think if a pitcher throws a ball at a batter or an umpire for that matter is a no-no for any reason. especially if you are able to throw it with a 90+ mph speed, you never know how and where that ball could hit.

If you played baseball ever you know it hurts, it does not justify what beckett did or what abreau did.

I watched the Chicago Cubs against the Brewers 2 nights ago, Reed Johnson stole Prince Fielders Grand Slam, next inning Julio threw the ball intentionally right into the middle of Johnson's back, I think he should have been ejected but the blue just gave him warning.

Well, I don't know if it was intentional. Jorge Julio is a little wild at times, but then again, he's known for having a temper... and there was a "good" reason for Julio to be angry at Johnson. Regardless of what speed you throw. I don't care if Jamie Moyer throws an intentional pitch to hit the batter. His intentions are still bad, and he's setting a bad example to people who will play in the MLB in the future, and kids who watch the game and learn from the players. It's completely ridiculous. What are you trying to prove, besides the fact that you have a short circuit and the fact you can't control your temper?

Well, Beckett got suspended for 6 games and fined for a disclosed amount. Great... I guess. I say that he should be punished. He got punished all right... but his start is postponed.
