As Seen on The 3rd String Safety (3rdstringsafety.blogspot.com)
I'm not so sure about this...
[1] For those of you who haven't been paying attention, Rotoworld.com is reporting that the Giants are considering trading the 31st overall pick to the Atlanta Falcons for DeAngelo Hall.
I have no doubt that number 21 in a Giants jersey makes them a much better team. That's not the issue. The issue is that the Falcons are unlikely to trade one of the league's best corners for just the last pick in the first round. So, if it comes down to having our first and third rounders, or Hall, I have to seriously think about saying thanks, but no thanks to the Falcons.
The reason why is that I'm a strong believer in drafting depth. We saw what it did for the Giants this season, and it seemed to have worked pretty well. Trading away draft picks is a dangerous proposition, as we saw with the Jets this season. So, ultimately, it matters a lot on what the terms of the deal are.
Also, don't think that Hall won't want a new contract almost as soon as he moseys into town. You're looking at another Nate Clements, 8 year, for 934 billion dollar type deal. So, that's another concern.
Lastly, it seems that Gibril Wilson will be moving on, and it's a damn shame. Wilson was a good, tough safety, and to see him leave hurts me a lot. At least, he left with a ring. With Wilson gone, who is going to be the Giants free safety next season? Michael Johnson played well in spot duty, but if you remember his draft profile (which I do, because well...I'm crazy.) he is the kind of guy who has the tools but never has put it all together. How confident are you in Butler and Johnson playing the back line? Another option is to move Sam Madison over, but That's from the Jason Comack- "No one should play their natural position" school of thinking that I hate so much. He's not Rod Woodson, it won't work out well.
So, If Hall is available for a 1st Rounder, Pull that trigger and print me a #21 jersey. If the price is steeper, I would be quick to back off and wait it out.
(Wow, Added bonus, he would take #21, erasing all vestige of Tiki Barber.)
