Should Pete Rose be in the Hall of Fame? Should it really even be that big of a deal?

Let me start off by saying that I've always likened the Pete Rose situation to the Watergate scandal.

I don't think it's the crime that has people so upset it's the blatant cover up of it.

While it's probably true Rose never against his own team, only for them, there were days when he didn't bet for them.  That meant he had a financial incentive to win certain games over others.  That meant he could have altered the bullpen to try harder to win games or hold leads which may have been detrimental to the team in the long run depending on the situation.

Still it's probably not the worst thing in the world and probably didn't cost the Reds much.  Had he just come out and admitted it right from the get go, he would have probably been suspended but his dignity would have still be intact.  But what did he do instead?

He denied continuously for months which soon turned into years, even in the face of overwhelming evidence that said he did.  (If you ever actually have the time to read the Dowd report, it's available online; the evidence against him is simply damning.  People in this country have been convicted on one tenth of the evidence Dowd had against Rose.)

Even when people who didn't like each other and had no reason to work with each other were testifying against him, Rose still denied it claiming it was all a scheme to get back at him.

Rose figured there was no way Major League Baseball could blackball one of it's greatest players, and therefore rules like that didn't apply to him.

Unfortunately for Rose he overplayed his hand immensely.  Nobody is above the sanctity of the game, no matter how great they are.  Something then Commissioner Bart Giamatti made very clear in that famous press conference where he announced Rose had been banned for life from the game he loved so dearly.

When Rose finally did come out and admitted he bet on the game it was all done to sell a book.  On the field he's one of the all-time greats, no doubt about it.  But that should tell you everything you need to know about what type of a person he is off the field.

As far as the Hall of Fame goes, I've found myself getting more and more fed up with the system they have set up.  Too many guys like Jim Rice getting in ahead of guys like Andre Dawson, who was a slam dunk better player then Rice, simply because it's seen that Rice waited long enough.  You're either a Hall of Famer or your not.  I know everyone has different standards as to who should get into that Hall of Fame based on statistical merit, but I think we can all agree that Jim Rice was the same player now as he was when he first came onto the ballot.

It's just this type of behind the scenes politics which probably always existed but is only being focused on now that has me more fed up then ever with the Hall of Fame.

With Rose though whether you reinstate him or not it really doesn't matter to me.  You can't take away what he did on the field as one of the greatest players ever to play the game.  He's the all-time leader in hits, games played, and at-bats.  But you also can't take away the fact that he is one of the most pathetic and shallow minded individuals the game has ever seen for what he did as manager.

I've gotten to the point where I'm just done with Pete Rose.  He's a great player who's forever disgraced himself.  Whether he's in the Hall or not, that last sentence about him will never change.

I think Rose has made people not care anymore, Pmoehrin, just as you point out here, his thickheadedness caused the situation he's in now. If he had confessed back when he was banned, he'd of had all that time to turn people's minds back to his side...

Pete Rose was one of the greatest players in history, if he hadn't screwed up his career he would have been in the Hall of Fame a long time ago. I believe that he should be in the Hall of Fame, because he was a great baseball player.

If the "National Baseball Hall of Fame" had a set of balls, it would tell "Major League Baseball" it's bans don't apply to them admitting players of significance for their on-field actions......

The Hall (and it's members) don't NEED to cater to Bud and MLB. Sure, there's a working relationship there but they have PLENTY of leverage to do whatever the hell they want. Is MLB going to create it's own Hall if Cooperstown decides to do what it wants???

It's sad that here in almost 2010 we still can't get the two hands to unfold themselves and get work done.

Shoeless Joe, Pete, all the (truly worthy) Steroiders...even George Steinbrenner (while he's still alive!) THEY WERE FAMOUS, dammit.... screw the numbers and LOOK at history. A Hall of Famer is a Hall of Famer whether or not they are in the Hall of Fame.

MLB continues to make fools of those who do their business for/with them. Baseball needs a REAL commissioner and the HoF needs to put it's collective greats together to lead a great institution into the future and to stop living in the past.

What's the insurmountable difference between having Pete Rose's bats and unis and gloves in the hall on display and putting a plaque with him on it in there too??? It's embarrassing to the Hall, not Pete.

It might just be me, but degenerate gamblers (ie, people addicted to gambling) disgust me quite a bit. Rose was so degenerate that he couldn't help to bet on his own team, and couldn't help but bet on baseball. And he wasn't even good at it.

Does he belong in the Hall of Fame? Yes, but I don't think he should be allowed to enjoy or profit from it. The year after he passes away, his eligibility should be restored.

That's what I was thinking.

To me, Pete Rose will always be remembered, or at least appreciated when it comes to playing the game of baseball. He was one of the best to ever play it, but he shouldn't benefit being in the Hall of Fame due to the fact that he was

Which brings us to another question: what about Barry Bonds? He has more homers than any baseball player in MLB history, and has more offensive records than just about any other player. And Rafael Palmeiro (500+ home runs, 3000+ hits... one of 4 players to accomplish both those feats). I think they will be remembered, but should they be placed in the Hall of Fame once they die?

What Rose did was much more serious then what Bonds did.

Taking steroids and other PED's do damage the integrity of the game, but guys have been cheating since the start of the game. You don't allow Bonds in and by that standard you also have to pull out everyone who ever used greenies which have been around since the 60's, and Gaylord Perry.

Steroids damages the integrity of the game, but at least it's still in tact. When you start betting on the game and trying to alter outcomes to your benefit, well now your commissioner might as well be Vince McMahon.

Every league has taken a zero tolerance stance against betting in sports because it's the single worst thing that can happen to a pro sports league.

Harness racing was the most popular sport in the United States during the late 1800's. You want to know why it died out? Because there was so much race fixing going on people simply got fed up with it, and stopped following the sport.

Everyone talks about how much damage PED's do to the game, yet I've yet to see one person stop following the game because of them. As bad as baseball is, steroid use has been going on in the NFL for years, and yet it's never talked about.

So I say this if steroids are that big of a deal to people, then stop following pro sports, because they aren't going away anytime soon.

You do what you can do with testing and move on. That's about the only solution there is to controlling the problem. Ultimately the players have to make it an issue of policing themselves if they really want to rid the game of them, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I would sincerely hope that people understand what Mr. Rose(up your nose speedy) did. In every lockerroom in baseball Major or minor is a sign that states: Gambling is Illegal and in violation of baseballs governing rules and regulations. Plus he lied to everyone from the waterboy on down to the Commis and even today talks like it was OK. Holy Crap, you have got to be kinding me here. His stats are Hall of Fame worthy, no question here, but what he did and continued to do after leaving baseball really makes it hard for me to forgive and forget. You all know that one of my best friends was Shoeless Joe and what he did wasn't even near what Rose did. Joe was proved innocent of the fixing charges and too his dying day always stated that fact. Talk about who deserves to be in the Hall. Rose is a way back second to Joe. Had Joe been allowed to continue baseball I don't think Rose would have ever passed him. From my grandfather to my father to me and a lot of my families friends in baseball that saw Joe play have all agreed that he was next to Williams and maybe ahead of him the greatest pure hitter to play the game left or right. He was smooth in the field and plate and ran like a deer with an arm to match any in baseball before or since him. Pete Rose needs to realize what he did to the sport that made him a star. Did he do drugs, we will never know, but one thing is for sure was he could put the ball in play. I still feel and will continue to feel he doesn't deserve to go to the hall of fame for what he almost did to the game. Gamble Gamble the only thing in the rules that would keep you from going to the Big Show. I maybe a little hard but having watched him and listened to him and many others and having known others just as great as he makes my skin crawl if someone put him in the hall with the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, Aaron, Clemente, Mays, Dickey, Foxx, Williams etc.....right or wrong I can't seem to get the idea that it is somewhat OK to do it.
