Shaq Heading West???

The worst team in the NBA, the Miami Heat, are reportedly thinking about trading away veteran 7'1, 325 pound Center, Shaquille O'Neal.  O'Neal, who's been having hip trouble recently, has played/started just 32 of the Heat's 46 games thus far this season.  Shaq's numbers have been rapidly decreasing as well, over the last year or two.  I think that both O'Neal, and the Miami Heat organization need to part ways, a change is desperately needed down in Miami.  It just hasn't been working out, and the 9-37 Heat need to the cap room, I think it's pretty sad that we are nearly halfway through the NBA season, and Miami hasn't even reached double-digits in wins.

It has been said on ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3232862), that Shaq could be heading west, to the Phoenix Suns, for PF Shawn Marion, and PG Marcus Banks for the Suns.  I don't exactly understand why the Suns are going after O'Neal, they have an all-star center in Amare Stoudemire, who, by the way, is 10 years younger than O'Neal.  I don't see why the Suns feel the urge to go after him, but it seems that the trade talks are pretty heavy.  Odd, isn't it???  Especially since they are going to have to pay big bucks for him.  Why not go for youth, Shaq may not even be able to produce one good year, why the risk???

This is an obvious long-shot, but what if Shaq went back to LA?  I know I would jump off a bridge if that happened, but what would you guys do if he ended up in LA with Kobe, Gasol, and Bynum?  Just curious.  Well, anyway, I was just very confused as to why the Suns are going after him.

Shaq (left), watches from the bench alongside fellow teammates Alonzo Mourning, and Udonis Haslem
Shaq (left), watches from the bench alongside fellow teammates Alonzo Mourning, and Udonis Haslem

Shaquille's Stats in the past 2 Years (Per Game):

06-07 (MIA)- 40 G, 39 GS, 28.4 MIN, 17.3 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 2.0 APG, 1.4 BLK, 0.2 STL, 3.5 PF, 2.4 TO, .591 FG%, .422 FT%

07-08 (MIA)- 32 G, 32 GS, 28.6 MIN, 14.2 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 1.4 APG, 1.7 BLK, 0.6 STL, 4.0 PF, 2.9 TO, .581 FG%, .482 FT%

Hey, would you look at that, Shaq's Free Throw percentage is actually higher this year, than it was last year.  Shaq's rebound numbers actually look pretty good, considering his 28 minutes per game, but he's gonna have to do a little more than just rack up rebounds in order for Miami to win games.  Rebounding is a given for a guy his size, no matter how old he is.

Amare's got way more skills than he's shown so far. His game has been stifled by playing in the middle. Now, with him playing the four and FACING the basket, and being the unquestioned number one option on offense, you'll really see his game. He moves really well, has good hands, and, now that he will be playing every night against guys either smaller or weaker than he is, his defense will improve. And it's not that he's a bad defender, its just hard to guard Yao and Shaq and Duncan every night.

Amare is not a center. Shaq is. The Suns N-E-E-D a rebounder and a space taker to play 20-30 min. a game BAD!!! Shaq pretty much fits that definition.

I just heard the rumor and I love it and hate it.

Marion and Banks' contract are gonna get moved one way or another:

1) on Paper, this allows Amare to D-O-M-I-N-A-T-E at his natural position and lets him learn under THE biggest power player of the NBA's history. It puts Shaq on a team to contend for the title - which means HE WILL be motivated.

2) The Spurs don't want this to happen.

3) This is Sarver saying "I want to sell tickets"

4) You say Shaq slows the running game down, but I don't think so... they run when Grant and Skinner are on the floor, they can run with Shaq. PLUS - Nash feeding Shaq and/or Amare will leave the 3 WIDE open - and that's all D'Antoni wants.

5) It don't make ANY damned sense. And that's why I am starting to like it!

5b) NEVER, NEVER, NEVER underestimate a motivated Shaq!!!!

5c) The Heat will have to take some salary over the following two seasons (The Suns have $8mil trade exception for this year, but that means nothing past this year) or this won't happen.

Boris Diaw's is going to be better playing the 3, Barbosa and Bell are going to get W-I-D-E open shots galore!!!

Let me say this - I saw the Suns vs. the Heat here in December and seeing Shaq in person, I was surprised how well he played. Shaq plays when he wants and I think he'll want to!!!!

Wow. Terrible trade for Phoenix. They may want to get somebody to keep up with the Lakers after the Gasol acquisition, but nobody makes less sense for the runnin' Suns than Shaq. I mean, yes, they need some rebounding help, but Shaq isn't the guy -- he's older than dirt, injury-prone, his contract runs longer than Marion's (and for more $$), and he's not as productive as Marion, either. Crazy stuff, if it's officially a done deal.

SO we have an aging center, who is nursing injuries already, likely to nurse more throughout the year, and who isn't known for offseason workouts...sounds like they better do it this year to me....

I hate Shaqs contract compared to his recent production, however with that said - a Trade like Marion/Banks+cash for Shaq and a swap of picks would give the Suns what they need to counter the Lakers. Shaq only needs to be 100% of whatever is left of him in the playoffs for him to be valuable to the Suns. Someone who can bang with Duncan, Bynum, Boozer and Yao in the spring. It would be a calculated risk, but it could end with a ring.

With Shaq on the Floor, Amare is going to run rampant, Nash will be getting 20 assists a night and Bell and Barbosa are gonna shoot 50% from the 3. Hill and Diaw are going to improve too.

What everyone fails to realize is that Marion not only caused matchup problems for other teams, but also for the Suns. Plus he's a sourpuss in the lockerroom. He was absent in the playoffs last year and he wants a ridiculous extension.

This will allow everyone to relax and go where they will play their best.

And Shaq will suddenly be looking a lot more spry - count on it.

The Suns aquiring Shaq wouldn't be the best move in my opinion. Look at their starting lineup: Amare, Diaw, Marion, Bell, Nash. It's perfect, and you can tell by looking at the standings. Even though Amare is only 6'10"-6'11", he is extremely powerful and is better than many other starting centers. The only way Shaq would go to another team is if the team is desperate for anything in hopes of winning, or if the only thing they're missing is a center. He's still putting up good numbers. They're not his best, but as people age, they tend to get better, except when you're Roger Clemens, but that's a different story. Plus, Shaq is injury prone. Why would Shaq go to the Suns?

I also forgot to mention: There have been some problems in the locker room. Marion wants out, which would probably be the only reason why the Suns are thinking about acquiring him. I was dumbfounded when I heard about this trade. It's all done pending Shaq passes a physical. The first Suns game I watched was back in 1987 and since then I can never recall the team having a true bonafide center. At the same time as we go to the present, the Suns have been successful under Mike D'Antoni without one. But the argument is that Phoenix hasn't won a thing. Shawn Marion wants out and he'll get what he deserves for his whining over not getting a contract extension by going to Miami. If the Suns win it all this year, he'll really look like a selfish moron that thought of himself more than the team. Boy, I really don't know what to think. If this was Shaq of even two years ago, this would be a huge trade, yet never see the Suns give up this little in a deal. His age and injuries have caught up with him and those years in L.A. where he was THE superstar dominating the NBA and anybody that dared to face him are long gone sadly. The Suns are six years too late in acquiring him. If Phoenix's high-tempo style of play doesn't change for the better with his presence, this trade will look stupid. But, if this helps on the defensive end, that's the one clear plus here.

Shaq is still Shaq though, you have to respect him. He will require a double team. The problem with the Suns is in the playoffs they have to play a halfcourt offense, and there isn't enough space for their players to roam. Shaq taking up a double team will open up a lot more lanes for the guards to shoot in.

And if you double team Shaq, Amare will destroy you!

The Suns don't use lanes. They use Steve Nash weaving in and out, penetrating and kicking to the three or go to the two man game with Amare. Barbosa and Hill are slashers, but in D'antoni's sytem, they are initiators with the pass, or to a spot for the 3... look how many 3's Hill has taken this year.

To defend the Suns now will be picking your poison - Shaq or Amare. And it's gonna hurt bad either way.

When the story first broke last night my first reaction was YEAH!!, Amare's going to play the four, Marion is gone, the Suns are going to kick ass!!

But now.....

I'm with BigP, Shaq is going to have a negative effect on the Suns offense, he can't keep up. If they got Shaq to play 25-28 minutes a game then maybe it'll work, Brian Skinner can pick him up for 15 easily.

But the positives far outweigh the negatives. First, Shaq negates Pual Gasol and Tim Duncan, etc. Now the Suns can play a slow down game if necessary because they have a big, stationary body in the lane.

Second, Marion and Amare' didn't get along. The fact Marion is gone helps the Suns in the clubhouse, which is at least as important than on the floor. Marcus Banks was the lead dog in Mike D'Antoni's doghouse so him leaving is a positive as well. However, that creates a new problem. Banks' replacement in the sinbin is Boris Diaw, who is untradeable with his ridiculous 4 year, 36 million deal, (this is his second year in the deal).

If Shaq is effective in his minutes, and Skinner and Eric Piatkowski can handle the middle for 20 minutes a game when Shaq is on the bench then the trade is a steal. If Shaq can't play 25 minutes and Skinner and Piatkowski can't play decent for 25 minutes then the Suns are fucked, because Diaw is as worthless as a snowblower in the Sahara.
