Santana Trade: A Minnesota View

I like how all of sudden this place went from one Minnesota Twins writer...too multiple ones!

Yes, Johan Santana was traded to the New York Mets for Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Phillip Humber, and Kevin Mulvey.

When I heard the news, I didn't know how to react. You could say, "at least they got something," or you could say, "what about Ellsbury, Hughes, Cabrera, or Martinez?"

The Twins are good with the hidden-gem prospects (Francisco Liriano, Joe Mays, David Ortiz, Alexi Casilla], Eric Milton, Cristian Guzman, Boof Bonser). Some of these names are a little bigger named prospects, but I think we have to trust the Twins.

The more I thought about it, I was a little more bugged. Unless the 3 pitchers turn out really good, the Twins should've wanted Ellsbury over Gomez. It also bugged me some that they didn't make sure they got a contingency plan as well. What if Gomez isn't ready? They should've demanded a guy like Ryan Church, Mike Pelfrey, or Aaron Heilman.

Twins Opening Day Starter: Scott Baker or Boof Bonser

But Remember, the Twins know other team's prospects, more than the teams themselves.

Let's Give This Time.

They apparently don't know their own very well, however.

While I am a bit concerned about the Twins rotation without Johan Santana, there is some hope with this deal. The Mets gave up their #2, #3 and #7 prospects in this trade (I'm not 100% sure if those rankings are still the case right now, but it was mentioned on 1050 ESPN Radio earlier this evening). Carlos Gomez is a very good prospect and can help the Twins even right away if he has a good spring training. He was up with the Mets after the 2007 roster expanded to 40 players and saw some playing time. For the Twins, hopefully they'll find someone to replace Santana in the rotation where he'll do very well, but the expectation cannot be to spell Santana. That's because it's highly unlikely it will happen. It would take a career year by Liriano or one of the other Twins pitchers we haven't seen yet have a breakout campaign.

Perhaps the Twins made the deal with the Mets because they are in the National League. If the Yankees or Red Sox wanted Santana the price had to be really high. Remember, they play the Yankees and BoSox more often. They will only see the Mets during interleague play and or the World Series. This could have been a real factor.

they play the yankees and red sox 6 times a year, so at most you'd face santana twice. The more important concern would be a future wild card race, but i don't think you can really worry about that in this deal.

I think the Twins waited too long to make a deal for Hughes or Lester, and the Mets deal was the best they had left.

Liriano's not your Opening Day starter? It's largely ceremonial, but even after TJ surgery, he's their best pitcher.

That's just what I was thinking. Isn't Liriano supposed to be healthy to start the season?

He's supposed to be. Recovery from Tommy John surgery only takes a year, and he had it done in November of 2006 or sometime around there. I haven't heard of any setbacks, so he should be good to go.

Ellsbury's a slap hitter with no power and no arm. Gomez is faster than Ellsbury, has a rocket for an arm and may hit 30 homers a season. Ellsbury won't hit 30 his whole career.

Ellsbury will probably never become an elite outfielder, but Boston couldn't trade him because of the PR nightmare it would've caused. I can't tell you how many "fans" I heard say they'd rather have Ellsbury than Johan Santana.

The last report I heard on Liriano, which was yesterday in fact, is he has been long tossing and is about two weeks from throwing off a mound. He has not had any setbacks, but it is unlikely he will start the season in Minnesota. He needs innings to build his strength and it is better he gets them in the minors.

From what I have read, Major League talent evaluators split between Elsbury and Gomez as to who has more potential. If you wanted Church, Heilman and Pelfrey I would have gladly given you any one or all all of them.

Christian Guzman? I think for like 3 years straight I had a fantasy team where my shortstop got hurt and my only option on the waiver wire was Christian F-ing Guzman, and he blew it every year.

I am very surprised they took all the prospects instead of someone who is a prospect that has some experince, like Ellsbury or Hughes , glad he isnt a Yankee though!

Ellsbury has 16 more career ABs than Gomez, a negligible difference.

Isn't that what I said? Gomez is a far better talent with a much higher ceiling than Ellsbury.

As opposed to the Mets, where prospects get no hype whatsoever... Yes, Ellsbury is way overrated though.

Sorry, Tmil, misread. For sure. Ellsbury has already peaked. Maybe a little better than Juan Pierre, but not as good as Johnny Damon.

I definitely agree there. I think he will turn out to be another Pierre, and some team will be stupid enough to sign him to a ludicrous contract when he reaches free agency.

I personally think $126 million for a league-average pitcher was worse, but they're both abysmal contracts. At least Boston can more easily absorb the cost of their mistakes.

Just To Clarify: I meant Pelfrey/Heilman/Church in addition to the other 4 players. The Twins have no insurance plan on this one. What is nothing turns out good?

Yeah, the Yankees making the Red Sox to bid against themselves was priceless. Added 19 million to the rights agreement for nothing. Fackin' idiots

I love the fact that the Red Sox bid 51.1 for the right to negotiate with Matsuzaka. They second-guessed themselves twice because they were so paranoid about the Yankees outbidding them.
