SF Giants 2008 Review Part 1

There is way too much to cover in one post, the whole season in review, so I'm going to break it into 3 parts; what went right, what went wrong, and what needs to be realistically changed. We'll get things started on a light note and talk about what went right this season.

The starting pitching, minus Barry Zito, was pretty darn good for the most part this year. Tim Lincecum very well could win the NL Cy Young Award in November and as highly touted as he was, I don't think anybody, including myself, expected this kind of dominance, this quick. The Giants won 72 games this season and Lincecum got 18 of those, that in itself shows how well he threw this year. Then there was the 2.62 era, 265 strikeouts and .221 baa in 227 innings. The Giants other young righty wasn't bad himself, though he could have been better. Matt Cain was a little inconsistent at times, but overall, pitched pretty well, again, without much run support. He once again lost more than he won, but sported a respectable era, and was again amongst the NL league leaders in strikeouts. And Finally, the breakout performer, Jonathan Sanchez. Due to a to a tired arm from throwing so many innings for the first time in his career, he definitely struggled as the season wore on and had to be DL'd at one point. However, Before the break, Sanchez was 8-5 with a 3.97 era and 115 k's in 111 innings. His emergence made the loss of Noah Lowry a little less painful.

In the Bullpen, Brian Wilson, Alex Hinshaw, Sergio Romo and (if he can get healthy) Merkin Valdez all emerged as guys to build around. The Giants look to have finally solved their closer fiasco with Brian Wilson. Not that Wilson had the best year, his 4.62 era and 1.44 whip need to come down next year, but his 41 saves and ability to overpower batters gave Giants fans glimpses of Robb Nen. Valdez showed he could he has closer stuff as well, but only got to throw 16 innings before hurting his elbow and ending his season. Take one bad game in Coors field away from Romo and his era is in the 1's, that's how well he threw in his 31 innings. Put that along with 33 strikeouts and only 8 walks and he looks like a strong right handed set-up candidate heading into next year. Hinshaw took over as the Giants primary late inning lefty and he thrived in that role and had a very solid overall season. The pen will need some work in the winter, but there were some bright spots to look forward to.

As far as positional players go, it was all about the youngsters. Especially Pablo Sandoval and Fred Lewis. Sandoval dominated the minor leagues for 4 months, then came up and did the same in the bigs. The 22 year-old ended the year at .345 with 3 home runs and 24 RBI in just 141 at-bats. With Bengie Molina under contract for another year, Brian Sabean has stated the plan at this point is to have Sandoval penciled in as the everyday 1st basemen heading into 2009. Jon Bowker (.255 10 hr, 45 RBI, 326 ab's) could also be in the mix at first if he can learn to be a can improve his plate discipline a bit. Travis Ishikawa should also be on the the 25-man roster. In the infield, Emmanuel Burris became the Giants everyday shortstop in August and established himself very well both offensively (.283, 37 runs, 13 steals in 240 at-bats). Not bad for a 23 year-old shortstop who hadn't even played above double-A before this season. Fred Lewis made an otherwise boring outfield relatively fun to watch. His numbers (.282, 9 hr's, 91 runs, 21 steals in 468 ab's) don't stick out at you big time, but if you watched this team throughout the season you know how consistent he played and how much Lewis improved this year from last. As far as the veterans go, Bengie Molina was rock solid once again behind the plate (.292, 16, 95) and Randy Winn started playing better towards the end of the year, although Nate Schierholtz has clearly become a better option in right field heading into next season (at least vs. righties).

BTW, Kelsdad, just for clarification on that issue from a few posts back, since you insisted on not believing me, maybe you'l believe the closest media writer to the team:

Henry Shulman SF Chronicle:

"Sabean said the Giants are in "better shape" now than at this time last year because they identified left fielder Fred Lewis, shortstop Emmanuel Burriss and Sandoval as starting position players."

Ok, nevermind direct a direct quote from the teams' general manager that came about 2 days ago that was assessing the team heading into next season, I guess that means nothing. If you still honestly think the plan is for Sandy to catch and Burris to start at second, get real. Bochy might not even be here next year. If it were up to me he'd be axed.

Does it really matter? The Giants will suck no matter where Burriss plays, matter of fact, the fact he even plays means they suck.

Let me ask you something Tre..do you think the Giants are sending Burriss to the Arizona Fall League so he can learn a position he already plays?

I'm just reporting what I heard. And I think I've made this statement to you before...GM's and managers and players tell journalists what they want to hear, they don't tell the truth. Sabean could have told that guy they were moving Zito to left field and the dumbass would have printed it. That's just how things work.

I really like your writing, and I give you enormous props for sticking with the Giants blog through a shitty season, but if the best sources you got are some drunk beat writers, sorry, but I can't give much credibility to what you put down sometimes.

Maybe they're sending Burriss to AFL to showcase him for a trade?

HA HA. All I can say is wow, someone's feelings got hurt. Drunk Beatwriters huh? One of the most respected baseball writers in the nation. Dude your making 0 sense, and starting to look a little silly if you ask me. I'm not trying to jab at you, I am pointing out the Giants plans, and that is that. End of story, this topic is done. The plan on October 4th 2008 is for Burris to play short and Sandoval to play 1st. End of story. Stop this nonsense.

Yeah, coming way off base and calling the closest reporter to the Giants a "drunk" because I was making my point clear makes you sound a little pissed. Anyway. Lets get over this. We'll see what happens opening day. Different topic: Why the hate for Burris? Exactly how would having him start at short for this team be so bad compared to what's out there???

I don't think his rookie year was too bad at all. He was supposed to be all glove and legs and no bat, but he is disciplined and can hit a little bit. I wouldn't have any problem at all with him starting at short.

The term "drunk sportswriters" was a generalization..they're more interested in the free food in the press box than the game. Most of them are only concerned with their deadlines, truth and substance are not all that important.

I don't hate Burriss, he's a legitimate basestealing threat, when he gets on. He's not much of a hitter or someone who's going to draw alot of walks, and defensively he's iffy.

If he does start next year at SS, it's only because the Giants couldn't find anyone better, not because he's a legitimate ML shortstop. He does have some value....as a utility player, which is why Bochy wants him to become proficient at second.

And, as a Giants fan, you know the Giants have fewer options at second right now than at short, only makes sense they give him a shot.

And like I said, he's reporting what Sabean told him, which isn't the whole story.

This quote is from January '08, and comes from one of the Giants PD staff. "Neither Emmanuel Burris or Brian Bocock is close to being a ML caliber shortstop right now, and the jury is still out on them. Bocock is more advanced tool wise at short, by 2010, we expect both should be ready for full time ML duty, with Bocock likely having forced Burriss to second base."

Based on my observations: AFL games, practices and a small bit of 2008 Spring Training... I like Burris MORE than Velez as a hitter. And KD will tell you how much I like Velez.

Both are second rate players, neither will ever be an All-Star and they're bound to be roster fodder and backups but I won't knock either of them because they're fast emephers, decent enough with the glove (Velez has better footwork and a softer glove but Burriss' arm is much better) and Burriss DEFINITELY has a good work ethic.

Another compliment to Burriss is that he is a fellow "Manny"...

Seriously though, Velez was an "eye catcher" with his speed and surprising bat pop for a human stick figure. I would still rate Burriss higher at either 2B or SS. Burriss would make a hell of a 4th/5th outfielder/pinch runner type as well...

Utility men!!!

Keep this in mind, KD... Burriss stole Playing Time from the highly touted Reid Brignac and it wasn't all bat related because Brignac was DHing (which is why he still led the AFL in PAs last year) when Burriss was leading off and playing SS... Burriss played well after a slow start and outperformed Velez by November.

I like Burriss. He's a back-up type but on the right squad, he's an adequate starter. I can name at least 50 Shortstops in the past 25 years that were every day starters that I'd take Manny Burriss over EVERY DAY of the week...

It's easy to knock him, but it's not neccessary.

And "All sportswriters are drunks" is more accurate than "drunk sportswriters"...

One can be sober in the pressbox and "a drunk". But you nailed it on the head with "they're only there for the food" part.

I haven't spent THAT much time in press boxes but certainly enough to know that "the high profile" reporters eat and jet. Most stringers and writers eat, write their story by the 5th/6th inning and eat some more... then if they do stick around, they're gone as soon as they do their last edits and send the story off...

Read - REALLY read a game account some time... I bet MOST of the focus is on the first 5 innings or the last one... they don't follow an ebb and flow like the games do, they go right for the swing of momentum and boil it down from there...

It might not happen so much with playoff games, but go back and read some games accounts. If you watched the game intently, you can tell when the writer was eating and when someone else had to lean over and tell them what they missed.

MOST sportswriters are hacks and very lazy. Either they are burned out from the monotony or they just sucked to begin with...

It's not a pretty business at all. The Food is a refuge!!!

options at second: Kevin Frandsen, Eugenio Velez, and Travis Denker.

At short: Alex Ochoa and Emmanuel Burris.

Burris at second and Ochoa at short would be the best defensively, but not so great offensively. Burris at short and Frandsen at second could be an option... I've also heard the Giants may be interested in Dan Uggla (arb. eligible) and the Marlins would take Burris and Tim Alderson, but that's just pure speculation that could make some sense for both teams.

Ha Ha. Yeah, I see where your coming from regarding the sports writers, but there are actually some decent writers out there that work their tail off. Anyway, my post was a direct quote from Sabean used in an article, not the writers speculation, but we're past that conversation at this point.

Dude, just noticed the PD quote and I hate to keep beating this subject, but that was before the season and has absolutely no relevance at this point. Bocock was up early in the year and was horrid. Burris is way better. I'm not ready to declare Burris a "back-up-type player" quite yet Manny. As I said earlier, he had a decent rookie year playing in a horrible lineup. He also played terrific defense. He's very young still and should improve. If he hit around .280-.300 with steals and respectable OBP like he showed in 2008, then he would make a decent shortstop, especially with his defense and arm. He reminded me of the '05-'06 Omar when he was playing at short.

Trec, let me re-word my stance...

If Manny Burriss is on your roster, you'd WANT him as a utility/back up guy. If he's your starter, you could CERTAINLY do worse, but you would prefer to do BETTER... When Burriss is a starter your team isn't going to be much better than say.... the San Francisco Ginats...

Catch my drift?

Manny, Of course, in a perfect world, we'd have Hanley Ramirez at short and Chase Utley at second with Buriss backing them up. I'm just saying that with the options out there in free agency and the prices teams would want for some shortstops who may be available via trade, Burris doesn't look so bad penciled in at short right now. I really hope Sabean doesn't splurge on Rafael Furcal whic is the type of guy Sabes seems to like to go after, but over the last 5 years, free agents have not fared too well coming to SF outside of Omar Vizquel, Bengie Molina and for about 1/2 the time, Ray Durham.

No, it's probably because they both looked horrible this year and the Yanks and Sox don't want them to go all winter with that on their minds. They need the work, likely not being showcased, there really isn't any need to do so with those guys. Just my opinion.

Alderson looks very good. But comparing him to Lincecum at this point is tough. He doesn't throw as hard, but he has the funky delivery and is way younger than Lince was when he was drafted. He is very advanced. Could see some time in '09 if he keeps it up. I see him being on a little quicker track than Matt Cain, but I think he will come up and contribute immediately when he gets called up, just as LinceCain did. I think Madison Bumgarner could even be better. Can't wait until we see Bumgarner, Cain, Lince, Alderson and Sanchez. Hopefully that core can stay together. But I fear one of them (Cain and Sanchez especially) will be gone by the time Bumgarner arives.

The Giants are so stocked with young pitching it's ridiculous, their whole staff at San Jose this year are all very good prospects and that's not even including Bumgarner. Jesse English, Kevin Pucetas and Ben Snyder are all legit major league prospects as well.

Two San Jose players made the Cal League's top prospect list for 2008, Alderson (#6) and Pablo Sandoval, (#7).

The Giants were 22-12 in games started by Tim Lincecum, and 50-78 in the remainder. The Dbacks were 24-10/58-70 in Brandon Webb's starts, 20-13/62-67 in Danny Haren's and 44-23/38-57.

The difference is the Giants have hitting prospects in the minors, the Dbacks don't. The only true impact offensive player close to being a ML regular is Nate Schierholtz, but in every classification, down to Rookie ball, the Giants have at least one solid bat. The Dbacks have one potentially impact offensive player (Josh Whitesell) in their entire system.

If the Dbacks lose Orlando Hudson and Adam Dunn to free agency, which is pretty much assured, the only thing keeping the Dbacks from mirroring the 1962-1968 Mets will the performances of Webb and Haren.

The Giants will surpass the Dbags in the standings as early as next season, as will every other team in the division.
