Rumor: Boston Red Sox considering a boycott of the trip to Japan

by Soxaddict

It was reported on the Boston Herald's website this morning that the Red Sox are debating a boycott of the Japan trip scheduled to take place later tonight ( source.)

The reason behind the supposed boycott is that the Sox coaches are worried about receiving their $40,000 bonus for heading to Tokyo.  The Herald's "inside source" says that the team will be issuing a mandate to Major League Baseball threatening that if the coaches aren't paid then the plane will be empty for tonight's trip.

Something tells me that if MLB forces these guys to work without their promised pay, Francona and gang will have very sloppy uniforms while in the dugout!

If the Sox are serious, MLB better pay. It would be a PR nightmare if the Sox didn't show. I think Selig would rather talk about an All-Star game tie than have that.

Guess these guys are all going to watch "John Adams" on HBO in the clubhouse today. Great mini series by the way.

Uh.. this article was thrown together at 9 AM this morning. Before ESPN mentioned it and before the player vote was taken as to whether or not to go if the money wasn't paid. Don't call people jackasses before you make sure that you don't look like one first.

The coaches need to be paid, but the Red Sox boycott is just stupid. It looks bad for the game.

It looks like leagues all over love to take this international thing well beyond their abilities. Even the NHL announced games in Prague and Sweden for the start of the 08/09 season before it was discussed with the players' association. When asked why it couldn't just be a simple "yes" or "no", players said they wanted to make sure the team and staff was being compensated for the travel and hotel accomodations.

BigPPup, the Red Sox players are trying to use their considerable leverage to help their coaches (who have minimal leverage). Blame MLB, who promised compensation for the coaches. Don't get pissed off at the Red Sox for rallying behind their coaches and staff.

Raw nailed my sentiments on this issue perfectly. Well said. Kudos to the Red Sox for sticking up for their coaches (when the heck was the last time that millionaire athletes cared about their coaches anyways, this is refreshing...)

Well, they won't say how it was resolved (Globe), but it looks like they are officially headed to Japan. They had a unanimous team vote not to go, which is pretty cool. They were backing their coaches, staff, trainers, etc. Way to force MLB's hand, guys.

So when the sox extended his contract to 2011 with options for 12 and 13 for roughly 20 mill, it wasn't enough? if you count those two extra years he is making roughly 20500.00 a game?!? Last I checked there are how many games in a season...162! So yeah I think that 40k is a little too much to be freaking out about especially when your taking a mini vacation.

I disagree completely with what the Sox did here. They are professionals. Professionals get paid after services are rendered, not before.

Have you ever received a paycheck before you did the work?

If the coaches didn't get paid after they returned, that would be the time for action.

I can't say I blame the Sox on this one. The MLB has not exactly proven itself to be honorable over the years. Especially where issues of money are concerned.
