Roberts, Crede: Could be on new Teams Come Opening Day

The may be trading away Brian Roberts, as well. With the Baltimore Orioles trading away Miguel Tejada (HOU) and Erik Bedard (SEA) earlier this offseason, they may also get rid of another key member of the Orioles before opening day: Brian Roberts. Apparently the Chicago Cubs are somewhat interested, although manager Lou Piniella thinks they can win with the lineup they have now. I wouldn't be surprised if the O's did trade Roberts away, because that's all they seem to want to do nowadays. I understand why they dealt Tejada: because he wanted out, and he was of no hope (not to mention the steroid allegations)... but Bedard??? Roberts???

Here's what Piniella had to say: The more I look at this thing, the more I feel that way. I think when the season starts we're going to be pretty much together the way we are right now. Trade rumors are part of the game, you can't do anything about rumors." (Quote taking right from this week's edition of USA Today's Sports Weekly).

Crede moving out West???
Crede moving out West???

But, after the quote, it says the Cubs still aren't closing the door on this deal just yet. Chicago's CF, Felix Pie, is in on the trade talks, and so are a few minor leaguers, which is what the O's have been getting out of all these trades they've made so far. All of this was reported yesterday, I haven't heard anything else about it yet today, so, the trade is unlikely to happen, but there's still a slight chance.

Today, it has been said that the SF Giants are looking at the ChiSox 3B, Joe Crede. I'm not positive on who else is involved in the trade talks, but I think the Giants need to go after him, their 3B as of today is 36 year old Rich Aurilia, and hit just .252 last year, with 5 HR's, and 33 RBI's. Aurilia hasn't even played much third base in his 15-year career, and isn't even listed as a 3rd baseman, but sits at the very top of the Giants' depth chart as their 3rd baseman. I think this will be a great addition to the Giants lineup, SF has never really had a great 3B, Crede played just 47 games last year, and hit 4 HR's, 22 RBI's, and had a BA of .216 (very close to the Mendoza line), but when he's healthy he has a pretty solid bat. In 2006, Crede hit 30 HR's, 94 RBI's, and had a .283 BA, I'd say that's pretty damn good for a 3rd baseman, I'd take a healthy Crede over Aurilia anyday, wouldn't you???

More trade rumors on the way.

I mean, Roberts is a serious upgrade over Theriot, so I think it would be a good thing for the fans.

Theriot is a good utility guy, a gamer and should be willing to play off the bench if it means being on a winning ball club. If not, oh well there is always Kansas City.

I thought Theriot was the starting shortstop for the time being. Well there is Ronny Cedeno. And Mark DeRosa is another utility guy they have, who can play second base really well, but I think he would do better on the bench.

The Tejada allegations were not part of the reason Baltimore moved him... both Houston and Baltimore were completely unaware of these allegations because the Mitchell Report came out one day after the trade was finalized

Tejada was rumored to be on the juice a hell of a lot earlier than the Mitchell Report. And besides - no team really cares who was named or not in the report anyways.

The ChiSox need to move Crede to show their commitment to Josh Fields who is the future

I agree with that. I like Fields and he needs to really be put in a place where he can emerge into a decent player. He isn't learning anything from Crede

Plus, Crede hasn't been healthy within the last couple of years. If he can't stay healthy, what's the point of keeping him? Josh Fields has a lot of potential, and if he plays as a starter, he will get a lot of experience, and hopefully become a decent third baseman for the White Sox... both offensively and defensively.

I believe that Fields has already surpassed Crede offensively. There is still much room for growth, that is why Fields should deffinatly be the starter, and the organization should show him that he is their guy by moving Crede now.

I agree with all, Crede's time in Chicago should be over. Fields definitely needs to improve his eye at the plate, his batting average was sub-.250 and his strikeouts were alarming. Crede is a solid player, when healthy. But when you are a mid market team like the White Sox, if you have a player that is cheaper and also gives you the same, or better production, the vet has got to be moved while he still has value. Plus, back injuries in sports always seem to cut short careers. It isn't a good place to be injured when you have to swing a bat, and dive in the field.

The Orioles aren't contending now, and are nowhere near close to it. The reason they traded Bedard and want to trade Roberts is to rebuild their farm system and try to build for the future. Andy McPhail has apparently convinced Peter Angelos (somehow) that it's time to start over. For that, I commend him.
