Rick Tocchet and Tom Barrasso to the Hall?

Tom Barrasso may likely find himself inducted to the hallowed halls (and cramped if you've ever been there) of the Hockey Hall of Fame.  The HHOF released their list of eligible candidates this week and a few Penguins received consideration.

Certainly at the top of the list is sacred two-time cup-winning goalie Tom Barrasso.  His 369 career wins, 38 shutouts and record setting 48 career assists give him just as good a shot as anyone to receive this honor.  However, Tommy B was never a big guy with the media and may likely get relegated to another induction opportunity considering the company he shares on the list (ie. Andy Moog, Mike Vernon and John Vanbiesbrouk).

Also included for Hall of Fame contention is former Penguin Rick Tocchet.  Tocchet notched 440 goals and 512 assists over the course of his 18-year career, along with a cup win with the Pens.  Tocchet's post-hockey career found him in the coaching seat with good friend Wayne Gretzky, but also the subject of a two-year absence from hockey thanks in part to his involvement with the illegal gambling conspiracy known as Operation Slapshot.

Other notables forwards on the list include Pavel Bure, Doug Gilmour, Steve Larmer, Adam Oates, Pat Verbeek and Gary Unger.  Goaltenders include the likes of Ron Hextall, Felix Potvin, Mike Richter and the previously mentioned Moog, Vernon and Vanbiesbrouk.

Also, with the playoffs officially started on Wednesday, I've contacted a few representatives from Sens blogs on the net.  It's always fun to see what other fans think about their team.  There'll be a few links up later today focusing on some shared Q&A and other features with a few Ottawa blogs.  Until then, keep patient - game one is only a day away.

well played pwinter. Wasn't Vanbiesbrouck a backup for Richter at some point in his career. Talk about a solid one two combo in goal. I think Barasso is up their with those 3 as best American born goaltenders but they all fall behind Francis Brimsek

I agree - nice work Pwinter. Good to see another hockey fan joining the ranks of AGM.

And yes SportsApple, VanB was a backup to Richter - which is still pretty amazing that he could tally up 374 career wins. He was also subjected to a ridiculous freak accident that almost ended his playing career. He fell through a glass coffee table at his house and severed a tendon in his shoulder. It was believed at the time he'd never play again.

Fortunately for his career that was not the case. Unfortunately for the Penguins he was in net for the Panthers in 1996 to advance to the Finals.

So as amazing of an offensive talent as Bure was, did the Russian Rocket do it long enough at a high enough level to warrant entry to the HOF? I tend to think no, and definitely not over the likes of Gilmour or Oates. I could be wrong on Bure, and I definitely didn't do any statistical analysis to back that up, just my gut feeling.

Well I'm sure we could at least agree that his brother Valeri is nowhere near entry into the HHoF. Pavel did set some Russian League records before his NHL debut but I'd imagine that would only warrant his entry into some sort of Russian HOF. He was one of the fastest skaters before plagued with knee injuries and by far one of the "imagine what could've happened if he was entirely healthy" sort of players, but I'd have to agree - I don't see the Hall in His future.

Awww shucks...thanks for the warm welcome guys, I'll enjoy it while it lasts. Personally would love to see Dougie make it, as a former season tix holder at MLG I got to see him up close for a few years. Helluva player, great leader, and a classy guy to top it off.
