Replay in Baseball: Get Your Head Out Your Arse and Use It

On ESPN, Jayson Stark is having a chat about whether replay should be used in baseball. Despite the fact that all the other major sports use replay effectively in some fashion or another as you well know baseball refuses to use it at all. The argument for in favor of replay is fairly simply, those who want to institute it would basically like to get calls right. I don’t see any merit in getting calls wrong, so unless there’s a compelling reason not to get the calls right I say use replay.

The arguments against replay are many, but basically, well… dumb. One argument is that replay will slow down the game. People argue that baseball is already a slow game, we can’t be going over to a replay booth to check every close call. That’s a valid, but again stupid argument. Why? Well for two reasons really…

1) no one is arguing we should replay every play. Balls and strikes will always be the umpire’s discretion. Certainly one could argue a system like ques tec or k zone would do a better job, but no one is arguing for it to be used for anything other than an evaluative tool. Some people would argue replay should be used for all close safe-out calls, but I won’t even argue for that. I’m simply arguing that on easy to review calls like whether a ball was fair or foul and whether a ball was trapped or not we can go to an upstairs umpire who probably won’t need more than one look at the play and can radio down with his decision.

2) In addition to it not being used on every play it will not in any significant way slow down the game. What happens when there’s a close play like a fair or foul home run? Often times the umpires will gather together discuss it and may or may not reverse the decision. Based on whether they reverse the decision or not one of the managers will come out there and discuss/yell about it. Let’s say the umpires discuss the call for 1 ½ minutes and then the manager comes out for another 2-5 minutes, that’s somewhere between 3 ½ - 6 ½ minutes for a close call. Instead of that couldn’t we just review the play for 2-3 minutes tops. We could probably have a good 3-4 replays per game in the same time span as one challenged call.

The other argument against replay is it takes out the “human element” of the game. I for one don’t even really know what that really means, or why it’s so sacred, but I understand that it’s important for the purists. I’ll make a similar argument against this misguided view in saying that there’s still a significant portion of calls (like balls and strikes) that will never be up for replay. So even with the most liberal use of replay there will still be the "human element."

But again I question what’s so sacred about the human element? Baseball like every other sport needs to progress over time. They used to have storm drains in centerfield that severely affected the careers of players like Mickey Mantle who got caught up in them and got injured. New technology came along and they no longer need to put storm drains on the field, is anyone upset about that? Let’s go back in time further; they used to wear no gloves at all or if they wore gloves it was barely larger than their hands. Now outfielders wear gloves large enough for a small baby to sleep in. Again, where’s the complaining about that?

Technology is not a bad thing and it’s time for baseball to give it a shot. Lets try it out see where it works and were it doesn’t. I think most people would argue inter-league play and the wild card have been good for baseball and I think they’ll realize if replay is instituted it’s good for the game too.

It can be used in baseball, but needs a lot o limatations. There has to be a way to keep the game in at least some sort o a reasonable timerame

So you saw the phillies' game? I thoink you're right, some things like home run calls and some plays at the plate could benefit. Perhaps something like the NFL challenge system?

i saw the replay of it and i saw the dicussion it inspired and i thought how utterly ridiculous it was for anyone to defend not even trying it out.

Do any of you think football and hockey and basketball are better now because of the replay?

I don't

Human error is part of the game, any game. If a third baseman can throw a ball over the first basemans head, if an outfielder can drop an easy fly ball, why should we take that element away from the umpires. So they blew a call, big deal.

I pay to see the game, which the umpires are part of. Instant replay is not.

Umpires are people. People are not perfect (by a long shot). Baseball is an imperfect game. Umpires belong in baseball to call the game. Replay takes away the honesty of the game. Baseball has not used instant replay in over a hundred years of existence, why start now?

Also, baseball is played one play at a time, and the umpires are always in position to make a call. Hockey and Basketball play is continuous which makes being in position to make calls more difficult. Football is played one play at a time, but because of the size of the field and the amount of bodies on the field, it is difficult for judgement calls to be made...

Nope. That is what makes it so great. It is impossible to be perfect. If a player gets out seven out of ten times to the plate, they are an All-Star. The best team in the history of the game never won all it's games (heck, nobody has even passed 130 wins). If a player's swing is off just the slightest of an inch, his entire swing may be completely damaged. If a player hits a ball as hard as possible, and somebody catches it he is out...

Players also used to never watch video tapes or lift weights. And as i said in the article... they used to use no gloves, they used to have storm drains in the outfield. There used to be no wild card or inter league play. Just because something used to be the case doesn't mean it should stay that way.

Baseball is a hard enough game as is Falco, as you said the slightest inch can alter whether you have a homer or a pop-up so when you put all that effort in do you really want an umpire saying nope you didn't really do that? You're opponent is enough of a challenge do the umpires really need to be one as well? Especially when you can have the right call changed sooooo easily.

Replay won't fundamentally change the game, its only on select calls, but it'll change it slightly for the better. The more we talk about players and plays and the less we talk about umpires the better.

The more we talk about players and plays and the less we talk about umpires the better. But umpires are part of the play, you can't (or shouldn't) have one without the other.

You could argue that the field is also part of the play, should we not groom it/do things to make it better?

groom it, water it, making sure there are no rocks... installing better draining systems, install better turf in dome stadiums. I could go on, we improve the field of play constantly, it's never perfect (rainy days etc) but we make it better. Just like we should do for umpiring, its a part of the play and it'll never be perfect, but we can absolutely improve it.

Fields are cared for now better than they have ever been. Granted, some of the older parks (Fenway, Wrigley) could use some upgrades, (and have already received some as well), but overall the field conditions now can't get much better.

Falcon, when baseball was first invented, it was 90 feet to first base, catcher behind the plate, nine players on a team. Yes, baseball has made some changes, outlawing pitches, lowering the mound, but the game today remains almost exactly as it was over 100 years ago.

Every other sport is almost unrecognizable now compared to what it was when it began. Look at a football uniform in 1950 and now. In 1950, basketball had no three point shot, and virtually no one could dunk. Hockey in the old days, no one wore helmets and fighting was part of the game. Now, helmets are mandatory and contact is penalized.

This is what was meant by baseball being "perfect."

I see no reason why we can't use replay to determine home runs if it's a close call. Plays at bases and balls and strikes will always stay the judgement call of the umps. It's important to get definitive calls like that right and if we have the technology, why not use it?

Baseball should have a human element, but it should be the players and coaches, not the umps. I've never heard someone whose team just lost the World Series on a bad call say, "Wow! What a great series! It had such a strong human element!"
