Rebutting dumb Yankees fans, Inciting dumb Yankees fans

There is, of course, a mind-bending level of stupidity entailed when jeering your home team's best player. The reasons are often varied, and always retarded. Maybe you're angry he makes more money than you, even though you could never do his job (not in a million years), which is why, of course, he makes more money than you. Maybe a jilted sportswriter told you not to like him, and you followed like a trained seal, clapping for a biscuit, [Do seals eat biscuits?] overwhelmed by the titanic brainpower of literary heavyweights like Woody Paige. Maybe he had a rough playoff series and made you cry, emotionally scarring you for two whole days. Whatever... the reasons are secondary, anyway.

This idiotic process is validated by your local, lecherous media, which feeds off the negative energy, perpetuating an illogical pattern of behavior.

Dumb Yankee fans [there are smart ones, believe me] possess a very narrow scope of logic. It's strictly an A+B=C scenario. They haven't won a title with Alex Rodriguez. Therefore, he stinks. The math is actually that simple, at least in the mind of a typical D.Y.F.

I have no idea if other franchises have been victimized. Phillies fans hated Bobby Abreu for some bizarre reason. I'm not sure if Red Sox fans have ever been this irrational, maybe one can remind me. All I know is, the negative energy flowing from the upper deck at tonight's game was absolutely palatable, and powerful.

Was I pissed when A-Rod meekly tapped into a double play at nefarious hands of Justin Masterson? Yes. Am I angry that my favorite team's baseball season is circling the drain largely because of their mysterious inability to get hits with runners in scoring position, and that Alex Rodriguez has been very much part of the problem? Yes, infuriated actually.

But incensed enough to boo the guy like he's Bobby Bonilla circa 1992? It makes no sense. None.

I have to admit, I was pretty angry after the game tonight. There was a lesson here that transcended baseball. I felt I'd reached an epiphany regarding human nature, especially in the area of scapegoat logic. After all, Jason Giambi deserves an equal measure of scathing treatment from the D.Y.F. contingent. Inept as Rodriguez with runners in scoring and without a title to his name, Jason gets a pass. All the hate is reserved for A-Rod. It has to be.

This is probably the lowest I've ever felt as a Yankee fan. Just a hideous, angry atmosphere in which to watch a ballgame...

In my distress, I've compiled a listed rebuttal for D.Y.F. Nation to consider before the next time they boo Alex Rodriguez as he attempts to field a ground ball.

1. Without Alex Rodriguez performing spectacularly in the REGULAR SEASON back in 2005 and 2007, two Yankee editions featuring shaky starting pitching would have missed the POST-SEASON. Contrary to what you may believe, the Yankees are not awarded an invitation to October by Bud Selig after Spring Training. The regular season does matter. Alex Rodriguez's performance in the regular season does matter. The playoff streak would have ended years ago without him.

2. Alex Rodriguez changed positions so he could play for the New York Yankees. He severed ties with his long time agent this past winter so he could remain a member of the New York Yankees. He had other options. He could have played short again somewhere. Why do you hate him so much?

3. Alex Rodriguez is playing for the Yankees the rest of his career. Isn't booing him counterproductive? Don't you want to see him succeed?

4. Alex Rodriguez is NOT the reason the New York Yankees haven't won a World Series title since 2000. Do you actually believe he is? Wait a second... do you actually believe this team would be better off with a WORSE player at third base? Do you think the 2005 Yankees, who prominently featured Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown, and Jaret Wright in a rotation sponsored by Tommy John, would have made the playoffs with Scott Brosius' big stick at third? You think the '04 Yankees, who pretty much had a two-man bullpen and a sketchy rotation for much of the season would have been a better team with Aaron Boone manning the hot corner? Do you think Alex Rodriguez is a negative karmic force which causes otherwise good teams to lose? Man, oh, man... go right ahead... rebut with a misguided argument about the 2001 Mariners or 2004 Rangers being better without Alex Rodriguez. Before 2001, the Mariners signed Bret Boone and some guy named Ichiro Suzuki, both had marvelous seasons that nobody saw coming. Mike Cameron and Ichiro may have been the best outfield combo, in terms of fielding, that the game has EVER SEEN. Think about it like this: Without Boone and Suzuki, the two MAIN COGS in the '01 Mariners, the 2000 Mariners, with Rodriguez in their stead, made it to the playoffs and the ALCS. Bret Boone would fade with time. Ichiro, for all his wonderful ability, simply can't elevate a mediocre team to another level. Take last year's Mariners. Would they have been better with Suzuki or Rodriguez as their superstar? As for the '04 Rangers, they enjoyed a convergence of fluke seasons. Ron Mahay and Brian Shouse had career years, Francisco Cordero was at his absolute peak, and Ryan Drese never came close to winning fourteen games again. They were lucky, not better without Alex Rodriguez. Bringing back largely the same cast of characters in preceding seasons, the team regressed, costing Buck Showalter his job. Teams are NOT BETTER without Alex Rodriguez. Please understand this. Please.

5. Do you really care about Alex Rodriguez's personal life? Babe Ruth passed out at Brothels and tried throwing his manager off a speeding train, and he's a baseball legend. Go ahead, hate Alex as a person, it may or may not be justified. But it should have no bearing as you view him as a fan of the Yankees. None. Take this tidbit from Oscar Wilde: Separate the artist from his art.

6. You really look ridiculous. I mean, flat out dumb. Remember booing Mariano Rivera because he blew a game in April? [BUT IT WAS AGAINST BOSTON!!] Yeah... this stuff is building up. Somebody call the karma police.

Damn you D.Y.F.s. There are plenty of sane, reasonable Yankees fans out there. We're tired of you representing the majority.

Was the alternate title "Shooting Fish in a Barrel"? I agree with you, you don't need to be dumb to be a Yankee fan, but the "suck" part is definitely a prerequisite! Seriously though, I haven't had this much fun since the days of Stump Merrill!!! (oh, yes I did!)

Shooting fish in a barrel? No, that’s when SUPER DUPER COOL atheists mock the fundamental religious folk. This is a plea for sanity. And leave poor Stump alone. The man toiled for decades in the minors waiting for his chance to manage the Yankees. How would you feel, sacrificing all that time just to write Mel Hall’s name in the clean-up spot?

I've often wondered why fans boo their team when they are losing/doing badly. That's when the fans need to get behind a team, not boo them. When everybody wins, then the fans are happy to cheer and make noise. If anything, they should be doing it the other way around. I can't help but think the Yankees would be better if their players didn't get booed every time they went to the plate.

I gotta agree with you Alex. I never understood booing either.

I will play devil's advocate and try to understand the frustration of the Yankees fan. The 2008 payroll is almost $210,000,000. With 70 victories, that's almost $3,000,000 per win. That's just a bit pricey. I'd be more angry with management for overpaying than I would with the players for underperforming.

There you go then. I like how I'm told that the Yankees are going bust, yet they're spending $210m this year. If you have that much turnover, there can't be that much of a problem.

Unfortunately, the cheer/boo thing is fairly black and white...

When your kid is being a dumbass, to you cheer him? No, you scold him.

And don't give me this corrective action B.S....I any fans could go down there and show Ryan Howard to correct the hole in his swing (or not swing at fucking curves in the dirt), they would...

fact of the matter is, you can only display your excitement (or annoyance) in 2 ways...

Like Yankee Stadium, John Candy had great performances and dry spells, but Candy's last work was a crappy Michael Moore film and Yankee Stadium has this team.

I would've gone with Raul Julia's last theatrical film being Street Fighter (which also has Kylie Minogue in it).

Considering the man's best movie was "The Addams Family" I think its kinda a push...

That being said, (little known fact), but Julia's last movie wasn't Street Fighter (but you did include the theatrical caveat, so close enough I suppose)

I'm sorry, but if you're an actor and your agent pitches a movie based on a video game, you should just walk out the door...unless you're jean claude van damm...then you need to pay him a 5% cut...

Red Sox fans way back used to boo Ted Williams. Seems unimaginable now, doesn't it? Last year, Patriots fans booed the Pats because they were down by 3 to Buffalo at half-time. Talk about spoiled.

I think booing your own player just for his performance is silly, and I wouldn't do it. But fans have a right to voice their disgust with a boo. They pay for the tickets, watch the games on TV, and all this winds up paying the player. If they don't like him, they can boo if they want to.

Kelsdad: Of course not. But you and I both know that booing last night was on another level. That wasn't a "oh man, you let us down again" boo. That was a "OH MY GOD THE SEASON IS GOING DOWN THE DRAIN AND IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT" boo. An abandon ship boo. The last time A-Rod was treated like this was back in '06, before the All Star break, after the Yankees lost Matsui and Sheffield to injuries and looked like they weren't going to make the playoffs. When the chips are down for the Yanks, when the screaming headlines are writing them off, a lot of Yankee fans totally scapegoat Alex. But when he's playing well... M-V-P M-V-P. Not fair.

As a Yankee fan going all the way back to the drought years of the mid, late sixties....

The better the player, the higher the expectations. That is true in any sport, and ARod is no different. If Robby Cano goes 0-5 and makes an error, the booing won't be as bad because the fans know Cano sucks and his performance is expected. If he goes 4-5 and hits a walk-off, the positive reaction won't be as much because we know it's unexpected and likely won't happen again anytime soon. Plus, he ain't bankin' 27 mil a year, either.

I'd bet if you stood on a corner outside the Stadium and surveyed fans, deep down most of them did not want ARod back after his opt out. Why would we? He's proven himself incapable of doing what we got him for, to add rings to Jeter's collection. People loved him in Texas and Seattle because the postseason was never an expectation, we all just sat back and watched him put up 40 meaningless homers every year. Now, when there is a higher expectation of his performance, he proves time and time again he is uncapable of reaching these heights.

If I was at the Stadium last night, I would have booed his ass too. He flat out sucked, and he admitted as much.

The Yankees season, and future, went down the drain when he re-signed. Unless he starts doing what the f*ck he's getting paid for, the next nine years will be the worst of his life.

Good read, Matt. To be honest, I don't know why Yankees fans hate A-Rod so much. However, I can think like a dumb Yankee fan and tell you why they don't like A-Rod. They're expecting him to carry a team and make it to the playoffs by himself. They expect him to hit 50+ homers, 150+ RBIs, and bat at least .300 every season. Why? Because the Yankees are paying him 30 mil/year. Whenever he doesn't get on base, drive in a run, or doesn't perform in the clutch, Yankee fans don't like him the next day. And then the next night, he hits a walkoff homer. Suddenly, everybody loves him.

Kelsdad said it best, the better the player, the higher the expectations. That's why the Yankees offered him so much money. That's why Yankees fans boo him whenever (or sometimes when) he makes an error, or strikes out, or pops up to end a ballgame.

If I was a Yankees fan, I would probably like him as much as I liked Manny Ramirez when he played for the Red Sox: I may not like his attitude sometimes, I may not appreciates what he does off the field, but on the field, he is a very good player, and I appreciate what he does for my team, which is help winning ballgames.

The pressure is always on the man who makes the most money or with the highest expectations (usually, the same thing if you're not just coming into the Big Leagues). And people don't realize that all this pressure could possibly negatively affect his stats, or maybe just how he performs in games if you don't like the word "stats".

I appreciate this article, Matt. I'm glad to see that there's another Yankee fan (besides Kelsdad) who actually makes sense.

Okay, first of all, Yankee fans may be mad at Alex Rodriguez during times when he has failed miserably in big spots, but hate him? No. A lot of the problem is, until they win another World Series title, people here in this town will more likely say only then he'll be a true Yankee. Do I believe in that? No. You wear the uniform, you help the team win games, you are a member of that team. Not that they compete against each other personally, but A-Rod has Derek Jeter as his teammate whom is held in such legendary status among the faithful, it's an unfair expectation to match. Yeah, A-Rod is one of the very best players in the game today, but how he's treated at times like Tuesday night is horrible and an embarassment.

Chances are, the loud booing came from 1) A-Rod's failure to get the big hit in VERY crucial spots in that game... 2) going 0 for 5 and hit into how many double plays? Two? ...and 3) the Yankees are now pretty much toast as far as their playoff hopes go. It'll take a miracle September that's more dramatic than 1995, and that's at the moment having no Chien-Ming Wang and no Joba Chamberlain.

Great article, Matt. In one of the few times New York sports fans have really shown an ugly side, I'm embarrassed by what happened on Tuesday night.
