About the Author

Mike Ketchen
I am well past obsessed with sports, especially Baseball. My girlfriend often thinks I would choose one conversation with Josh Beckett about his curveball grip over our relationship. It is tough call to be honest.. : )

Random ramblings for fantasy baseball

I do not think any of this holds any weight beyond the fact that these are some random nuggets that stand out to me. please enjoy ; )

  • Miguel Cabrera posted an .OPS under .900 for the first time in four seasons as well as his lowest slugging percentage over the same period. Yet he lead the American League in home runs. A feat he never accomplished in the national league.

  • These two outfielders were drafted eight rounds apart according to ADP and the margin will probably be just as wide this season.
  • Player A: .280/9/98/47/50 in 145 games player
  • Player B: .310/6/103/42/34 in 162 games player
  • Player A is Jacoby Ellsbury, a rookie who was considered somewhat “disappointing”. Player B is Ichiro, a player who is still considered a tier one talent. I guess my question is why?

  • Rich Harden finished fourteen innings short of qualifying for the league leaders in regard to pitching stats. However no pitcher, including Lincecum and Sabathia was nearly as dominate. If he qualified he would have lead all of baseball in the following: ERA, K/9, .BAA,  and tied with Halladay in WHIP. More over he got hitters to swing and miss over 15% of the time. He was a full 2% percent ahead of the league leader in strikeouts (Lincecum) in that regard.

  • Josh Beckett posted the best K/BB of his career, and the fourth best in all of baseball. Yet he was considered a bust this season. Unlucky anyone?

What does it all mean? That this was truly a unique and awesome season for fantasy baseball. And as these four little nuggets show weird things happen over the course of a 162 game season.

Ichiro's a gold glove outfielder who can impact the outcome of a game even if he goes 0-4. Ellsbury's a below average OF with arguably the worst arm in baseball who only played 145 games because of injuries, he couldn't even beat out Coco Crisp.

First, We are talking fantasy. Second Billy Beane was qutoed as calling ellsbury the best CF in the game and Iciro is considered league average now especially in CF. Also Ellsbury arm is average not horrible. Dont spew nonsense please

I hate to have to break this to you, but -- right or wrong -- quoting Billy Beane doesn't really bolster your cred in a debate vs. Kelsdad...

I have dealt with Kels before lol. But either way the article was about fantasy baseball and I am sorry but anyone who drafts Iciro before round four is a fool. And last season Ellsbury was +6 in CF and +9 in RF. So to call him awful is just foolish. Also I know Ichiro might have won the award (mcclouth anyone?) but he came in at -9 in CF good for 25th in all of baseball.

Further proof that Billy Beane's an idiot. You're right Mike. Ellsbury better than Ichiro is a fantasy.

Ok so Kels just so we are clear. You are stating Ichiro is a better fantasy player when he is being drafted in the first two rounds and Ellsbury in round 8 or 9? Furthermore you are still stating he is better in the field, despite his poor ranking in a system every sabermetrician and most front offices use heavily? Yea man, I got to give it to you. You are a special kind of stubborn. Some might even call it blind faith.

Fantasy points for 2008, per Yahoo...Ichiro, 95.08, Ellsbury 73.90.

"most front offices use heavily"

Not true.

And before you attempt a comeback answer, how many front offices have you ever been in? How many Winter League Meetings have you attended? Scout meetings? If your answer to any of those is less than one, then you're just blindly speculating.

hey thanks you just made my point for me. You really put your foot in your mouth this time pal. In that Yahoo league you were so quick to quote you used total points? Well see the problem with that is real simple. Ichiro played more games, all 162 in fact over which he averaged 1.75 points. Ellsbury played in 145 over which he averaged 1.98. So yea he was actually two points better per games. Thanks buddy I really appreciate it. But now let me guess you have some sort of spin right it? Tell me I cant answer give me a break. The +/- is respected around the league and you know it. Grow up and admit when you are proved wrong. Or in this case when you prove yourself wrong.

Ichiro:1.75

Ellsbury:1.98

Again, Mike, the conversation is around "fantasy," the only world in which Ellsbury is better than Ichiro. And further proving the only way to have an intelligent conversation around fantasy is to dial a 900 number.

dude really? that is the best you can do? in one response when you think you are correct fantasy baseball is accepted. In the next response when you have in fact been proven incorrect it is no longer relevant. You are better then that, step it up. Further more I never said anything beyond fantasy baseball. Hence why the article is about fantasy baseball. You are the one who threw in bogus claims about ellsbury and his defence. I mean just for once be a man and open your eyes. It is not hard to do.
