Quick Hits: Baseball, NBA Finals, NFL, UEFA, and other stuff

"Quick Hits" by Baltimoresports247 is a weekly column that will cover all things sports...and other stuff. I'll ask short questions about anything that's on my mind, and anyone reading should feel free to respong in the comments section. My thoughts will be in italics. Let's see what's on the table this week:

BASEBALL

  • Have the Red Sox already separated themselves from everyone else in the A.L.? Are they the favorites to win the World Series? In a word...yes.
  • Is it me, or has the umpiring (specifically, calling balls and strikes) been absoultely terrible this season? It's fine if you're gonna call a strike a little off the black, but for God's sake, be consistent!
  • Will the Phillies and Cubs meet in the N.L. Championship game? And where's the love for Sweet Lou Pinella? People get on his case when his teams lose, but the Cubs are playing pretty good ball right now. I like the Cubs, but I think the Phillies are poised to win the N.L. They're built for the playoffs just like the Red Sox are.
  • Speaking of the Cubs, can they survive a full 6 weeks without Soriano? Umm...maybe. They were 9-5 without him earlier this season, but 6 weeks is a long time. Considering baseball is such a "streaky" sport, they're gonna miss his consistentcy over this long stretch.

NFL

Just one question here:

  • Should the Bengals trade Chad Johnson? Yes...to the Ravens ;).

NBA Finals

  • Is the series over? Where has Kobe been in the 4th quarter of this series? How did the "tough" Western Conference soften up the Lakers? I don't ever count out Phil Jackson. Kobe has been disappointing, despite his scoring numbers...he hasn't dominated a game like an MVP should. In any event, it's gonna be hard to take one in Boston regardless of whether or not they win tomorrow.
  • Who is the Finals MVP? Paul Pierce. Hands down.
  • Has the officiating been fair? Any speculation about Donaghy-gate? Eh...it looks good to me. And with all of the investigating going on I don't expect anymore problems from NBA refs for a very long time.

UEFA Euro 2008

  • Who is the best team in this tournament? I think Portugal will end up winning it all, but the Netherlands has dominated the tournament so far. If I had to chose, I'd still pick Portugal
  • Is there any doubt in anyone's mind as to who the best player in the world is? The shouldn't be...Cristiano Ronaldo is a freakin' stud. Unlike Ronaldinho, he doesn't disappear in big games, as proven by his play in the Premier and Champions league finals.

Other

  • Has there ever been a better rap album than Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter III? Tough to answer this one because it just dropped, but this is right up there with 50 Cents first album in that you can play it all the way through. Best track = Got Money ft. T Pain.

Tune in next week for more points to ponder. I'm out. Happy Father's Day!

Have the Red Sox separated themselves: What about the Angels?

Are they the favorites to win the World Series: Maybe... it depends what you think about the National League.

Has the umpiring been terrible this season: I don't know. I watch MLB Gameday.

Will the Phils and Cubs meet in the NLCS: It could very well be that way, but a lot can can happen in a couple of months. Soriano is injured now, we don't know whether any NL West teams could get hot anytime soon (take a look at the '07 Rockies in last year's situation). We're going to have to wait...

Where's the love for Sweet Lou Piniella: I don't know. I've never lost my love for Lou Piniella.

Can the Cubs survive without Soriano: Absolutely. They have one of the best offences in the league right now: Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Geovany Soto, Mark DeRosa, Kosuke Fukudome. I think they can survive without Soriano. Like you pointed out, Baltimoresports247, they were 9-5 without Soriano earlier this season. They have learned to adapt without Soriano from last season...

Oh, and about Lil' Wayne... I personally don't like him that much. However, there are some good songs on there, like "A Millie" and "Lollipop". I personally wouldn't buy the album, but it's his best one yet.

As you all know, having a 1.5 game lead over the Rays in the AL East is very much a sign they have separated themselves from everyone else.

"Have the Red Sox already separated themselves from everyone else in the A.L.? ...In a word...yes"

So now 1 and 1/2 games in June is the new "separated"???

[edit] Boo....

"Should the Bengals trade Chad Johnson? Yes...to the Ravens ;). "

Come on! Give it some meat! A little protein! I'm trying to consume your product, but it's a lot of lettuce and a splash of some lite dressing!!!

Who would you give up? Why do you want him?

Make it pop! Make it stick!!! Give us something to think about, possibly even remember!

Go scream at yourself in the mirror, come back and make it hot!!!

wait wait wait... what? Carter III best rap album ever? This is an end of article joke right?

I don't even want to start, Get Rich or Die Trying is the "qualifer" Carter III is put up against? Jesus H Christ...

All Eyez On Me, Life Before Death, Straight Outta Compton, The Chronic, KRS-One's second release (the name fails me now), The Black Album - these are mainstream albums off the top of my head that leave The Carter Trilogy or anything 50 has ever dropped on the sideline.

Don't get me wrong I'm a HUGE Weezy fan, but Greatest Album ever? It isn't even influential....

Public Enenmy... It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.

Not just the best and most important rap album ever made, but one of the best and most important albums ever made, period.

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (My #1 and as close to touching G-D as you can get on this Earthly plane - if you listen closely, you can hear Coltrane's Angel's wings flapping)

Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (the basis for modern music)

Public Enemy - Nation of Millions (changed recorded music more than any other album. And allowed rap to me more than "Mary had a little lamb" rhymes)

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (regrettably, it opened the door for disco, but only because it opened the door to everything!)

Led Zeppelin - IV (boiled down and refined blues and rock n' roll and captured 4 of the most amazing artists ever at each of their creative pinnacles - which coincidentally happened at the very same moment - magic that we will never see again)

Pick whatever order you want, but everything else is simply inferior.

Ronaldo doesn't disappear in big games...ummmm, did you watch the penalties during the Champions League Final? He has played well in this tournament, but Portugal hasn't been nearly as dominant as the Dutch, who have separated themselves as the best team in the tournament, far and away.

And Portugal, heavily favored to win Euro 2004, were upset in the Final against Greece, with Ronaldo having a fantastic chance to tie the game late. He was 19 at the time, but he still has to prove he can take over when needed most. Otherwise, he'll start to cry, which I would thoroughly enjoy (even though I wouldn't want him to lose).

Best player in the world: Ronaldo. Best player in the tournament: David Villa.

On what planet? They have sick depth at starting pitching and that's assuming Schilling is done. This team can handle anyone during the regular season. They may not repeat but they will make the playoffs.
