Projecting John Maine

...from The Ghost of Scott Kazmir...

Over at Amazin' Avenue, Eric Simon comes up with the predictions for John Maine in the 2008 season.

Using different sabermetric formulas, Maine was projected at, the best, 16-10 with a 3.72 ERA, and the worst, a 12-11 record with a 4.05 ERA.

Maine, in my opinion, may be one of the toughest guys to predict on this team. He's right up there with Oliver Perez; now I'm not saying that they're inconsistent, but rather that they are some of the streakiest guys you'll see.

A split for Maine last year...10-4 with a 2.71 ERA before the All-Star break, and, ugh, 5-6 and a 5.53 ERA.

Yikes.

If I was John Maine I'd be pretty pissed if I was considered "right up there with Oliver Perez".

You're not taking the fact that the whole Mets roster did lousy after the All-Star break, not just the pitchers. I'm sure that if the Mets were just as good as they were last year, they will find the mistakes that they made in the second half of the 2007 season. I don't think Maine will do that bad, but his numbers will probably be worse. I guess it's natural for him.

The ERA is high after the All-Star break, but the Mets offense should be able to support a pitcher with an ERA between 4 and 5. The bullpen was so lousy in the 2nd half that Maine might have thrown an inning or two too many in games and in result ballooned his ERA. Hopefully the bullpen will be better and the starting pitchers won't have to take so much on their shoulders.
