PistonsPage: A Rivalry Brewing

The Boston Celtics played the better game than the Detroit Pistons on Saturday. Once again, it was a good game that went down to the last couple of minutes. Boston got their revenge at the Palace, handing them a 92-85 loss. But these two teams gave us a preview of what to expect in the future. These two teams got physical with each other, reminding me of the 80's when the Pistons played Boston. This used to be one of the most intense rivalries in the NBA. Sure, the Celtics and the Lakers were a bigger rivalry, but they didn't play much because they were in different conferences. They played about twice in the regular season and if they both made it to the finals, you were in for a 4-7 game treat.

In the 80's, the Pistons and Celtics were able to go at it about six times a year. And if they were both to reach the Eastern Conference Finals, there was a chance to see up to 13 games in a season. There will only be 3 games between these two in this season, but these two are favored to be the match up in the Eastern Conference Finals. Detroit and Boston are arguably the two best teams in the NBA, and are tied up at 1-1 in the season series. They've both been great games too. There is so much tension on the court between these two; the pre-game handshakes don't mean a thing. Detroit fans showed so much hatred for Boston, and visa versa. I was at the game last night talking to Detroit fans about their newly acquired disgust for the Celtics.

Here are some of the expressions from the fans that I heard while I was at the game.

Warning: This language may be a little too graphic for Boston fans.

"If I was down in the seats on the floor, I'd be talking so much s**t to them. I hate Paul Pierce so damn much. If I was on the floor, I'd hope he could see me sharpening my knife!"
"Rajon Rondo is a little b**ch. He's a little baby faced punk who can't do s**t against Chauncey, or any other guard for that matter."
"F**k Ray Allen! What a f***in p**sy."
"If Garnett was any darker, I swear he'd be a shadow."

Yeah, it got pretty intense. I heard fans swearing at the players and just showing them no respect. I did happen to find some Boston fans there, and they also showed their hatred for Detroit. Many fans booed them as they came to their seats, and just flat-out harassed them. But as the game ended, there were a few Boston fans yelling out, "F**k Detroit!"

Hey, even Chauncey Billups felt a little disrespected by the Celtics.

"They're a little more happy than we were when we won our game at their place. It was just a regular game for us with two good teams playing. They were kind of playing like it was the Super Bowl. It’s just a regular game, man, with two good teams playing. This probably means a little more to them and their psyche than it was for us,” Billups said after the game.

Ray Allen and Rip Hamilton both played physical basketball against each other in Saturday night's showdown.
Ray Allen and Rip Hamilton both played physical basketball against each other in Saturday night's showdown.

This rivalry is coming back, whether you like it or not. If you saw the game, you saw lots of pushing and shoving going on. The battle between Rip Hamilton and Ray Allen got heated. They weren't exchanging words, but there was just a mean, physical battle between them as they were fighting for position on offense and defense. On a Kevin Garnett lay-up, Jason Maxiell came from behind and blocked the shot. Garnett quietly said something and Maxiell got in his face, and they both started exchanging words with each other. Players were getting physical in the paint, and the refs did a good job allowing it. Many people believe that the refs made a lot of bad calls, but I applaud them for allowing a tough and physical game. There were also four technical fouls called in the game.

This is basketball at its best. Though there are only a few rivalries in the NBA like Phoenix vs. the L.A. Lakers, Dallas vs. San Antonio, this rivalry is starting to top those ones. And don't think it will only be for this year. This will go on for a while. Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce are all in their young 30's (32, 31, and 30). And with the young talent on Detroit, this will go on for a few years, I promise that. These are two very dangerous teams, and they both have enough depth to match up with each other in the playoffs. This rivalry will be good for then NBA. It will bring more ratings to the NBA playoffs and hopefully, rejuvenate the NBA to what it used to be.

Well Yakob, this was really just an article about how the Pistons and Celtics rivalry is back (at least that's what I think). But yeah, Glen Davis was the man, taking care of Rasheed Wallace in the final minutes of the game. He also scored a career high 20 points, and scored the night's biggest basket, a layup underneath off a feed from Paul Pierce with 8.5 seconds left to increase the lead from three to five and seal the win.

Like it or not?!?! How could a basketball fan not enjoy the re-emergence of this rivalry. I hope we are not robbed of seeing them match-up in the playoffs like were with the Suns and Spurs last year. Rivalries are what makes sports great and this is one of the better ones. Although for Boston fans Detroit is 4th on the rivalry depth chart behind LA, Philly and NY. We'll take it because the other three blow.  ;) Best part about this renewed rivalry? Both teams benches are deep, and they will play big parts in every game they play.

Once again, good article OFD. I wish I saw the game, but I was on my way back to Kuwait when they played.

These games ARE really getting intense; I can tell. Let me tell you something: I LOVE IT! But (there's usually a BUT in a comment like this) I prefer to see some good clean basketball. It's not very sportsmanlike to say: "Thanks for coming. "Adios! See ya," and mocking Detroit fans and pretend to wipe tears from his eyes and say, "What's the score?" That's all James Posey right there.

And to end it all, Posey threw in one more insult, intoning the "Deeeeee-troit basketball!" rally cry that Palace announcer John Mason has made his signature.

First off Posey, I wouldn't talk that much trash if you're not that great of a player, and yes, he's average, if not below average. And it's not like he had a big game or was involved in much of anything during the game: he had 3 points and 2 rebounds. *APPLAUSE*

Now Chauncey Billups, on the other hand, makes so much sense. Boston fans (as usual) are taking these games way too far, which is why there's another rivalry between these two teams.

It should be interesting what they do the next and last time they meet during the regular season.

I could just imagine a great third game between these two right now. Check these matchups out:

Rasheed Wallace vs. Kevin Garnett

Richard Hamilton vs. Ray Allen

Tayshaun Prince vs. Paul Pierce

If they end up facing each other in the conference finals, it's going to be one helluva series.

Think Dallas Mavericks vs. Golden State Warriors, Falcon. ;) The Magic could always defeat one of those teams.

You're so right! Not only is this the rebirth of the best Eastern conference rivalry of the 80s, these two teams are helping to even out the modern NBA's balance of power. This has the potential to be a great rivaly! I hope these two teams meet in the playoffs!!!

Both of you guys are defnitely right. It IS nice to see that there are two dominating teams that can be talked about for winning the whole thing other than teams like the Suns, Mavs, and Spurs. I think they actually got some competition now; not to mention the Magic (although they probably aren't as good).

The NBA needs a rivalry, for the past couple years all they been doing was overhyping their stars and that went no where, even back in the day before Michael Jordan became the Michael Jordan we all know and love, there was the Pistons/Bulls rivialry, Larry Bird and Magic had the Celtics/Lakers rivalry, the NBA needs to go back to the days when it was more about the name on the front of the jersey than the name on the back

About those matchups that Romiezzo brout up, there is already some beef goin on. I know KG and McDyess (although Sheed and KG are more likely to be matched up) got in a little scuffle a couple of seasons ago. Also, I remember hearing Paul Pierce say that Tayshaun Prince was a weak defender (this being right after Prince had locked him up one night) and T-Mac stepping in saying that Prince was the toughest defender he'd ever faced and one of the best in the league in response. Prince isn't the kind of player who would talk back to the media about that, but you can bet he remembers it and thinks about that when he's playing Pierce.

this is the best basketball ever played. the nba is now all of a sudden letting players play and not calling the bullshit and flops (SPURS) i believe the pistons are a better all around team but this playoff series will be hardcore and intense. unlike most nba fans i love seeing hard fouls and trash talking going on
