Phillies arms still has questions?

As Spring training approaches this week for most teams, I am still oh so worried about the starting rotation of the Philadelphia Phillies. I'm fine with Cole Hamels; he's a 17-20 game winner with run production, but he needs to lay off the use of his change-up a bit. By the end of the year hitters were starting to attack his change, and it started to get ugly. It really irritated me when the Phillies brass and a lot of fans actually think that Brett Myers was the missing piece to this rotation, I don't think so, whatsoever. He was a mediocre maybe average starter at best. His last three seasons as a starter was a combined 36-26 with a 4.38 ERA, even in the NL that isn't impressive. He was a perfect fit as the closer, now the Phillies are going to throw him back into pitching 6-7 innings against his wishes? What this was fans was just a sneaky way to get out of spending money out in the market for a name or even a trade. The Phillies are cheap and it's going to show through Spring Training when these pitchers get on that mound.

Kyle Kendrick, I'm not going to throw my eggs in the basket for him just yet. Now there's tapes of this guy. Hitters are going to adjust and hopefully Kendrick worked on what he can do to get better. He's still very young so the room for improvement is wide, so that is the good news. Adam Eaton, well I'm not going to waste anymore space on him, the Phills have done that for him already. I really don't know what Moyer can give to the Phillies this year; I hope that it's not to much to ask for 11-13 wins and a little less than the 5.01 era he put up last season. This upcoming Spring Training proposes a lot of questions that haven't been answered by the Phillies management. According to what I heard from Pat Gillick, one more move could be in the works for a nice arm either in rotation or the pen.

So you called the Phillies office and said, "Hey, this is Chris, can I talk to Pat?" and they patched you right thru, or do you have his home number?

So then your article should be about that, would have been a nice "scoop".

Anytime you get info from a chance encounter, that's big news.

Seriously, write another article, share the story and the questions/answers.

No, because if he was just saying that to tickle my fancy, than its pointless to make a big deal about it.

Exactly. The guy has a high profile job, he goes out in public and gets the same questions all the time. Granted he can't tell you the whole story but at the same time he won't bullshit you just so you leave him alone.

And the fact it is true the Phillies are still in the market for pitching means he was truthful with one answer, no reason not to believe the whole conversation is true.

Tell you what. Message me what he said to you and I will try and verify if its true, then you can write another article afterwards.

Deal?

Their guy is some half-ass starter who needs a shot...

I'd still gamble on garcia, even though he won't be ready till July...that being said, he's probably better than Benson or perez (Odalis)

As far as Myers, I think you're too hard on him...the phils wanted a starter, so they went out and got a reliever and ergo added a starter...Myers is a better starter...he can put up 200+ innings a season and the phils have the offense to work with him...he's a gamer...

Besides would you rather have Lohse starting and myers as the closer or Myers starting and Lidge closing...

Hamels bread and butter pitch is his change...you gonna tell santana to lay off his change? (on that note, Santana's change is probably going to own Ryan Howard)...

Eaton sucks, Kendrick has the potential (potential) to win 15 and Moyer is, if nothing else, a gamer that will give you his best...I also think he's more valuable then simply pitching every 5th day...

And as far as the phils being cheap...duh...It pisses me off that this franchise complains how no one comes and the fans say they don't because the ownership isn't committed to winning (which they aren't)...then the team made up of young tough guys comes out and wins the division, the fans come out and cheer and the ownership goes out and gives the fucking fans a golden shower...

Fuck Bill Giles and his god damn bullshit...

and pay ryan howard 10 mil

Jut...

Hamels' pitch is that change; but when you throw it too often, hitters will sit on it, and then kill it... he should utilize his other pitches more in order to make his change that much more dominant...

Lidge and Myers at the back end of the bull-pen would be nice for the Phils, but Myers is a better starter than Lohse

btw, what's up with Flash Gordan?

Eaton sucks... duh

Kendrick could be really good, but he could also be really bad... I agree with Difran that it is a little too early to tell...

Howard is a gamble at $10 mil... I agree

And to top it all off... welcome to Philadelphia sports ownership... winning is "not the main concern there"

its either 7 mil or 10 mil for one year...they owe him 10.... I still would prefer the phils add Otsuka...Otsuka-Gordon-Lidge is a pretty good combo...

but adding Otsuka would be a positive move by the Phillies... so in that reguard, it doesn't seem quite likely...
