Phillies Pitching Settles In; And Some Offense Never Hurts...

Well, let's see... earlier, I complained about the Phillies and their lack of solid pitching.

Now that they've rattled off four consecutive wins with some decent pitching outings, I might have to change my tune a bit.

Last week hit a lot of bad notes, starting with Brett Myers' thoroughly wretched line against the Marlins:

IP    H  R ER BB SO HR PC-ST  ERA
 5.2   7  5  5 1  3  2  94-57  4.66

Ugh. Enough to make you want to freakin' hurl. Five earned runs on seven hits and two homers surrendered. Then add the lackluster offensive performance: eight hits and two solo homers accounting for whatever signs of life the Phils had (and there were not many) in a 6-2 loss. To a pitcher (Burke Badenhop) who has a grand total of five wins (and five losses) in his career. Emetic.

And then the news that we will be losing Myers for the season? Not exactly like losing Steve Carlton, I admit, but the Phillies losing any pitcher with an ERA less than 8 can't be a good thing.

Cue Sj-rantocycloid....

But wait, what's this? Here come the Nationals. But not so fast, my friend. The Phils have proven that they are quite capable of losing to teams they should be beating. Remember a two game sweep against the Padres earlier this season?

But what happens? J.A. Happ throws a gem and the Phils get a tight 5-4 win over Washington.

IP  H  R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
 5.1 3  3 3  3  5   1  96-62 3.00

Well, it's not a 2-hit shutout with 9 Ks, but for a Phillies pitcher, it's pretty damned good. And - look at that - offense! Thanks, All-Star Raul Ibanez and your two RBI. Hey Phils - see what can happen when you score some runs?

Next up - a bit of a slugfest, but the Phils come out on top, registering a 9-6 win punctuated by two Ryan Howard homers (one a grand slam) and an RBI courtesy of pitcher Cole Hamels.

IP  H  R ER BB SO HR PC-ST  ERA
 6.0 8  6 6  1  7  1  104-67 5.21

His line was a bit rough, but it was good enough for the win. And he's the only pitcher I'm not concerned about, so we'll move on to the next game now.

And the sixth time is the charm, as the Ancient Mariner Jamie Moyer nails down that elusive 250th win. Moyer surrendered one run, but other than that, a very good outing:

IP  H  R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
 6.0 3  1 1  0  4  1  102-62 6.75

And this game was just what the doctor ordered. Chase Utley drove in a run in the bottom of the 1st, and Chris Coste added a homer in the 2nd to give Moyer the early lead. It's a formula that works. I am hoping to see more of this concoction as the season goes on.

Finally, we get to Joe Blanton, who has struggled a bit this year. And lo and behold, here's his stellar line from a 5-3 win over the Padres:

IP    H  R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
 7.0   6  3  3  1  5  2  95-62 5.86

I could have done without the two homers (I'm sure Blanton would say the same thing), but if you give up 3 runs in the MLB, you should still reasonably expect to have a fighting chance to win. Utley and Howard provided just the right kind of offense: the home run kind. Utley drove in two runs, and joined Howard in a back-to-back extravaganza.

All this coupled with some Mets losses, and all is right in the NL East again. Thank you, Pirates!

Now that the pitching and hitting seem to be working hand-in-hand, I seem to have run out of things to moan about. Not to worry - this is the Phillies we're talking about. They never seem to go too long without giving me something to bitch about.

And tonight - A debut outing for Antonio Bastardo against the crafty veteran Jake Peavy. Sounds like good fun to me. Go Pirates! And more importantly - go Phils! Don't change a thing.

don't worry about it, chump - the Phillies pitchers suck. they'll collapse and the mets will win the east. the phillies can't even beat the mets in face-to-face games - how are they gonna win the division?

The Mets went 11-7 versus the Phillies last year...

Mets ended up in 2nd place in the NL East

The Phillies?

Totally missing the point. I wonder if AF even read the article? It's about improvement in the pitching. Nothing in there about winning the NL East. Although I am loving the Pirates right now! Go Buccos!

Here's what's concerning:

Average IP per start:

Moyer: 08: 5.6 09: 5.3

Blanton: 08: 6.5 09: 5.8

Hamels 08: 6.8 09: 5.3

That's a heavier load on a pen already ailing with Lidge and missing Romero. Madson's done a ton of work already, Durban hasn't looked great (I still think he's tired from last year) and Condrey always scares me. Plus all those innings need to be eaten by someone (and not Adam Eaton). I don't think anyone likes Chan Ho (outta the) Park in their in the 5th...

That is telling. But what's even more maddening is that while Blanton and Hamels almost had 7 innings in 2008, these numbers are still overall pretty weak.

I think I'd really like to see Charlie push them a little and let the pitch counts go up a bit and let them have more chances to work out of jams. It just seems that the hook this year is coming way too quick.

All told, they pitched a lot of innings last year (including postseason). I used average IP because Hamels has missed some starts but each pitcher has pitched significantly less total IP for the first two months than last year...also a problem

You saw this evidenced early this season when the offense wasn't clicking. It is now, which really helped Bastardo last night (having a 4 run lead to start helps)...

Of course Amaro said he was looking for a top of the rotation starter so who knows what happens by July

At least you don't have to endure Daisuke Matsuzaka. Even when he wins, it's painful.

How bad can it be? He won 18 last year and had a 2.90 ERA. These Phillies pitchers have been up and down for years, and none of them (save for Hamels) have even approached these numbers. I guess $51 million doesn't get what it used to...?

I have to admit, I've never seen a game when he was pitching. I'll have to check out ESPNYANKEESREDSOX next time they have a yanks/sox game. I'm sure I'll have to wait a long time...

It's not the performance, it's the slowness. He'll load the bases seemingly for fun. He gets ahead 0-2 in the count then nibbles and nibbles until it's 3-2 and he walks the guy. It's like watching Kate Moss eat a double whopper value meal. It takes forever.

In my opinion, they're the defending champions today all the way until the day they get eliminated from playoff contention or in the playoffs... whether it's this year, next year, or whenever...

It wouldn't be so bad if his team didn't get beaten 4-1 last year...the Phillies are the same team...and so are the Dodgers (actually, talent-wise they're lesser) So what's the difference this year?

Not really actually. They had him for a few games in the beginning of the season, but it's like they're playing without him for almost the rest of the first half of the season. Well, without Derek Lowe, I guess it kinda evens it out now, doesn't it? ;)

It is interesting how well the Dodgers are doing without Manny.

And the Dodgers will provide a good test for the Phils - I'd be happy with a split in this upcoming 4-game set. I also feel strongly that there is no reason that the Phils can't take 3 of 4. Seeing as how the Dodgers are pretty much the same team as last year (lesser even), I don't get how they have such a good record. Have they been playing Washington all year?

the Phillies have...they're 10-2 versus Washington. 21-18 versus everyone else.

The Dodgers have/had a lot of good young hitters. Even without Manny they have a solid starter at practically every position and then some(Juan Pierre?!?!). The Dodgers have the second best Starter ERA in the NL (5th in Bullpen).

But looking at last year, they had the 2nd best BP behind the Phils and 3rd best starting pitchers (by ERA).

That, by definition (to some degree), is how you get into the playoffs...

Of course, last years pitching numbers were better than the Dodgers are right now...(by comparison) and they made the NLCS.

Then again, its not like they're pitching against prolific offenses (something the Phils...sorta have against Washington, who's 5th in the NL in runs scored)
