Phillies Opening Series Notes & An Ode To Pedro

I remember driving home from Phillies Opening Day last year after they lost to the Braves.  Some Phillies fans were already calling radio stations and demanding Charlie Manuel’s firing.  Gotta love the passion, but let’s take a deep breath.  It’s waaay to early to pass judgment on any team.  Here are some observations after the Phillies opening series against the Nationals, along with an ode to poor Pedro.

· It was good to see the Phillies bang out 16 hits in the series finale after being held to one hit by Tim Redding (yes, Tim Redding) the night before.  You love to see this lineup go deep, but when 13 of the 16 hits are singles, including seven in a row, you know that Phillies hitters are taking what pitchers give them instead of swinging for the fences.  That’s a good thing.

· Everyone’s favorite feel-good story, catcher Chris Coste, went deep for the Phillies yesterday.  I really think Coste and starting catcher Carlos Ruiz will provide quite a bit of pop from the eighth spot in the batting order.

· Pitching in a tough loss on Wednesday, Cole Hamels proved that pre-season pitching numbers don’t mean squat unless you’re competing for a job.  He could give Johan Santana a run for the Cy Young Award this year.

· News flash… no lead is safe against the Phillies offense.  They can put six on the board in a hurry, so opposing managers will have to be extra careful with their bullpen choices when they think a game is in hand.

· I won’t kill Charlie Manuel for pulling Brett Myers for a pinch hitter after five innings and 86 pitches on Monday.  Myers clearly didn’t have his best stuff and the Phillies had a runner on base.  But Manuel is notorious for pulling his starters anytime after five innings when the Phillies are behind, or when they get anywhere near 100 pitches.  They’re your starters for a reason, Charlie.  Let them take you deep into games, especially Myers and Hamels, even if it means occasionally letting them hit with runners on base in tight games.

· Ode to Poor Pedro: I was scoffed at when I said Pedro Martinez is now a six-inning pitcher who is guaranteed to miss at least five starts.  He may meet that quota by early May.  I don't relish any player's injury, but let’s face it.  Pedro was once a great pitcher, but he’s never been a gym rat and hamstring injuries tend to linger.  The best the Mets can probably hope for from Pedro and their other ancient starter, Orlando Hernandez, is to get 15-20 starts from each of them and have them healthy for the post-season if the Mets get there.  And that’s a big IF.  The Mets have no depth and question marks throughout the lineup, and I have a feeling they could have trouble keeping their collective heads above water.  I’m not writing off the Mets.  I’m just not sold on them as a “can’t miss” contender.

so if Santana wins 18-20 and Maine 14-16, can Hamels/Myers win 35 combined?

Not so sure about 35, but I think 30 is possible. I am not sure if Hamels can stay healthy long enough to win 20. Even with a back specialist in the house. I'd love to be proven wrong though!

I'd like to see more managers (not just Manuel) allow pitchers to go beyond 5 innings. Let them take their lumps and pitch through jams. Especially for young pitchers...the lessons learned from that could make them better pitchers in the long run.

Amen. Hypothetical example: Sixth inning... Phillies down 4-2... runners on first and second... pitch count at 84. Time to panic! Get the hook and get the middle reliever in the game! I'll never understand it.

this is baseball guys...and national league (read: real) baseball at that...

NL pitchers have shorter hooks because of the need to produce runs and there's more to it than the ebb and flow of one inning. For example, Myers was laboring in game one (mildly ineffective) and probably wouldn't have lasted more than another inning, so with the opportunity to score, Cholly went for it...

You can't just look at the numbers, you need to understand the game. I always prefer to leave starters in, but I'm also not an MLB manager...

Of course, AL managers don't have to think at all..."This pitcher sucks, get a new one"...

I'm not sure it's so much understanding the game as it is getting innings out of your pitchers. Especially a team like the Phils. Most of the time, I'd rather take my chances with Myers than turn it over to the 'pen. I understand the game.

not the game of baseball per se, but a specific game...i.e. who's having a good day, who's not, who's hitting the ball, who's not...

In scott's example, let's say, Rollins and Utley are off, you might wanna PH because you know that odds are, you need to score those runs now because when it comes down to it later, you may not have the same opportunity...

and with an offense that has a high strikeout propensity, this will happen a lot...

everyone in the lineup is so god damned streaky

Point taken. I agree that there are times when the starter needs to be yanked. But I'd like to see a little more dedication to the starters from Manuel. Sadly, I know the days of routinely getting 7 innings from starting pitchers are gone. That would be fun to have Rollins or Utley come in as a PH, wouldn't it?

Manuel has 2 inning eaters (myers and Moyer) and has little faith in a top offense...which is frustrating

but i have faith in his evaluation of hitter overall...

pitchers not so much ; - )

Guess the days of pitchers like Harvey Haddix and Lew Burdette pitching 13 innnings are over. Haddix gave up about 12 hits and Haddix gave up one hit and loses.

its incredibly stupid to base a pitcher of the arbitrary number of 100 pitches...

i mean, that's where you need a little old school baseball...how's he look, what's he say, how's the game going...people don't evolve that fast...

and you need some old school management to be able to tell when to pull a guy...of course, the NL alters that (and makes it more fun) by making management decide when to pull a pitcher in favor of offense...

Lamentably, you are right Niteowl. Of course, I am told over and over again how much better the pitchers of today are. I'm not so sure about that given this inability to pitch long into games.

The pitch count is a funny thing...what about warm up throws? Why don't they count? Two warm ups = a pitch? Didn't Hampton injure himself warming up? Maybe the Braves should give him a warm up count as well as a pitch count. Something like 3 warm ups and 50 pitches per game.
