Phillies - Dodgers Preview: A Totally Biased View

So it comes down to this. I've heard so many 'experts' (and, disturbingly, Phillies fans) tell me that the Phillies are as good as done... that the Dodgers might as well start printing World Series tickets now. The Dodgers will win in seven games, I'm told.

I don't see it that way. Sure, the Dodgers are hot right now, having posted a 22-8 record in September. So what? The Phillies are 22-9 over the same span.

How do the 'experts' at ESPN see things?

Jayson Stark, Tim Kurkjian, and Steve Phillips are calling for L.A. winning in seven games. Jim Caple has it L.A. in five games. Rob Neyer bucks the lemming trend, goes out on a limb and calls for the Phillies in seven.

Manager And Manny

Oh yes, there's Joe Torre - a great manager to be sure. But... there's nobody named Derek Jeter on this team. No Bernie Williams. No Andy Pettite, no Jorge Posada, no Mariano Rivera. No $200 million payroll.

There is Manny Ramirez, of course. That's something to talk about. But when you get past him, what is there? Jeff Kent? I think the Phillies can feel safe squaring off against his 12 home runs. Matt Kemp (18 homers) and Andre Ethier (20) are good players too, but they're a pretty big drop off from Manny.

Phillies? Yes, The Phillies

The Phils somehow managed (sarcasm firmly intended) to get past Ryan Braun (37 homers) and Prince Fielder (34), so they can deal with guys who hit home runs. And the Red Sox seem to be getting along just fine without Mr. Malcontent.

The Phillies have some good players as well. Ryan Howard (2006 MVP), Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins (2007 MVP), Cole Hamels, Brad Lidge... there's some power and some pretty good pitching there.

Head-To-Head Matchups

The season series? The Dodgers swept a four-game series at home in early August. The Phillies answered with a four-game sweep in Philadelphia about two weeks later, defeating Greg Maddux and 16-game winner Chad Billingsley in the process. They also scored three runs off 14-game winner (and game 1 starter) Derek Lowe in one of the losses. Lowe is another guy the Red Sox seem to be doing just fine without.

The Phillies pitchers in the losses were:

Kyle Kendrick, who is unlikely to see any action in this series

Cole Hamels, who gave up 2 runs in his game and suffered a no decision

Joe Blanton, who gave up 4 runs, and was undone by an ineffective bullpen... and who pitched considerably better against the Brewers

Brett Myers, who was demoted to the minors and came back a much better pitcher

The Edge?

So where is this great edge that the Dodgers have? Okay, Torre is a more successful manager than Charlie Manuel. But, give Cholly credit - he has gotten a misfit squad to the postseason two years in a row.

Philly's Jamie Moyer and Billingsley both have 16 wins. Hamels and Lowe both have 14 wins. Hiroki Kuroda (L.A., if you don't recognize the name... I didn't) has nine wins and Myers has 10.

Pitching-wise, it looks pretty even to me. Except for the closer. You can't really improve on Brad Lidge's 41-for-41 in save opportunities. And the set-up guys were real good against the Brewers at keeping things under control and then turning the game over to Lidge.

I'd have to say that the hitting edge would have to go to the Phillies. Yes, the Phillies. Three guys with 30 or more homers: Howard (48 homers, 146 RBI), Utley (33 homers, 104 RBI) and Pat Burrell (33 homers, 86 RBI). Whether or not you think Howard strikes out too much, the guy drives in runs.

Looking at the Dodgers team stats again, I am surprised that they even won 84 games (which would have put them 3rd in the NL East). Of course, they were helped by being in a pretty crappy division: Arizona (82 wins), Colorado (74 wins), San Francisco (72 wins), and San Diego (63 wins). And how did the Padres wind up with more losses than the Giants? Amazing.

Intangibles

What about the intangibles? Better surfing in Los Angeles. Movies set in Los Angeles are better. Better region for wine. Can't think of anything baseball-related that makes the Dodgers such a slam-dunk favorite.

Conclusion

While an L.A./Boston World Series would be a network's wet dream, that doesn't cut it when the game begins. I would also venture to say that it's not a foregone conclusion that the Rays might have something to say about the World Series matchup.

Nope. My mind's made up. It's probably true to say that I am led by a homer impulse, but I feel really good about the Phillies chances. They're no better/no worse than the Dodgers. Tomorrow night they start what should be an excellent NLCS. I look forward to seeing the 'experts' and their pedstrian predictions put to the test.

Bold Prediction

Phillies in 6!

CHEESESTEAKS!!!!

While the thought of Joe Torre and Manny Ramirez parading around the Fenway Park infield carrying the World Series trophy is a wet dream in itself, it ain't gonna happen.

Phillies are on a friggin' mission, and they're gonna wrap it up in five.

I would love to see that civil war, complete with baggy uniforms, faked injuries, members of each side stopping their fellow countryman's limp-wristed rock throws, and the lollygagging charges across the fields (think Braveheart with a picnic basket). What you said about Joe Torre confuses me a little. Sure, he doesn't have Posada, Jeter, Williams, Pettitte, and Rivera... but he does have:
  • Manny, for one (like you said), who has done great in the playoffs in the past couple years (including this year)
  • Russell Martin (in replace of Jorge Posada, who had a .308 average in the NLDS this year with 1 homer and 5 RBI in 4 games)
  • Matt Kemp (you mentioned his name, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that he's going to break out this series. This is his first full season, and his first couple games in the playoffs)
  • James Loney (who made a major impact in the NLDS with a homer and 6 RBIs)
  • Casey Blake (who is RED hot when he is hot... don't underestimate him)

Screw Jeff Kent, that's a heck of positive stuff to say about the Dodgers' offense right there...

NOW for pitching:

  • Derek Lowe (has been red hot in the playoffs in the past... just look at his postseason with the 2004 Red Sox
  • Hiroki Kuroda (had a great outing in game 3, surrendering 0 runs in 6 1/3, and defeating Rich Harden... I'd say that's pretty good.
  • Chad Billingsley (had a pretty good start himself... and being in the top 10 in wins, ERA, K's, and BB's allowed isn't bad either).

This is going to be a heck of a series, but I know why a lot of people are picking the Dodgers to win this in a 6 or 7 game series. This one is going to be exciting to watch. I'm going to go ahead and say Dodgers in 7 just because the PITCHING seems to look like a sure thing compared to the Phillies'. Sure, both teams had a low team ERA in the NLDS, but I would prefer the Dodgers' staff over the Phils' (with exception to Lidger).

And... I'm done.

The point of this was really to try to stem the tide of folks giving the Phillies no shot. I picked my spots and made comparisons and I think that based on what I found, the Phillies have more weaponry than a young and lucky Dodgers team.

The Dodgers played in a weak division and only won it by two games. The Phillies had to scratch and claw to get their division against much better competition. Again, the Dodgers would have been in 3rd place in the NL East.

And why is everyone so enamored of Lowe? Sure, he was 3-0 in postseason in 2004. He was 0-3 in 2003. It all balances out. In a game between Cole Hamels and Derek Lowe, do you really feel that Lowe is that much better a pitcher?

And enough about Manny! He's one guy! Two solo homers and a lackluster Cubs team do not a star make. Sure he did some great stuff for the Sox in the past...that was then, this is now. Two solo homers.

Russell Martin, Matt Kemp, James Loney and Casey Blake may have a great impact on this NLDS. But for now, they are young, unproven players. If you asked Torre, I'll bet he'd agree that he'd rather have Jeter, Williams, Posada, Pettite and Rivera.

Remember Torre's stint as an NL manager? Neither do I. That was before the Yankees, before a $200 million payroll. This is not to say that Torre isn't a great manager. I'd love to have him as the skipper of the Phils. But it's a lot easier to win games with proven veterans.

If only for the fact that it will be totally puke inducing to hear broadcasters endlessly drone on about Manny vs. The Red Sox...everybody should be rooting for the Phillies here. Do you really want to see Manny vs. The Red Sox played out night after night? Nobody is bigger than the game. He is a selfish, spoiled, sullen, churlish and talented player. He can change games all on his own. So can Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Pat Burrell....

I definitely understand your point. This series can definitely go either way. If it wasn't, then everyone would say it would only last 4-5 games.

I only mentioned Lowe because he has experience in the playoffs. Cole Hamels had a great start in the NLDS going 8 strong innings without surrendering a run. Derek Lowe isn't as good of a pitcher as Lowe, I'll tell you that right now, but Lowe is still going to bring at least 6 innings of 2-3 run baseball... at least that's what I think. The Dodgers' offense, the way they're rolling right now, I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped Hamels in his tracks and hit 2-3 runs in 6 innings of their own.

About what you said about Torre rather having Jeter, Posada, Rivera, etc., who wouldn't have those guys? They were amazing from '98-'00... and the fact is they PROVED themselves, which is why ANYone would pick the late 90's team over this year's Dodgers.

And you're right, Manny is one guy, but when he came into the picture, he made an impact... an impact that affected the entire clubhouse in a positive way.

And Sj, your last paragraph is gold! No one could've said it better. To be somewhat honest, I'd think any Red Sox/Dodgers fan would like to see that, but to be completely honest, there's a part of me that overlaps this. The media is would go crazy about this and it'd all be easy work for them. I would REALLY love to see the Rays and Phils go at it as well. As Stiles said, 1 World Series combined in the two franchises. I don't know, I'm stuck between who I'd pick to go onto the World Series, and who I'd actually prefer to WATCH in the World Series.

Yep, it sure is! The 2008 postseason definitely hasn't disappointed, just as I imagined to be. The thing I love about these 4 teams is the fact that each one is different in their own way.

Phillies: a team who had its chance last year, and is learning from the mistakes they made in order to advance to the top of the postseason ladder rung after rung.

Dodgers: a team who seemed like they made it to the postseason all because of one guy... but looking deeper into the team, it doesn't seem to appear that way. A team who was in 4th place last year, and ended up climbing all the way back up to 1st place...

Red Sox: The heavyweight team. A team that everyone knew would make the playoffs.

Rays: Simply put, a Cinderella story. The second time the team is over .500 in franchise history, and is really making a name for themselves.

Like I said, I don't care what World Series I see. Dodgers/Sawx, Rays/Phils, whatever... I'm sure it will still be interesting and entertaining to watch...

I can't wait for 8:22 either. However, I probably won't be watching the start of the game. College sucks [only sometimes].

I think the general concensus about the Phillies is similar to that of the Rays. The media wants a Dodgers - Red Sox matchup so they don't have to work as hard.

The Phillies and Rays both have that "history of losing" that everyonme seems to confuse with being the Cubs.

Look at this decade:

'01 Diamondbacks, '02 ANGELS, '03 Marlins, '04 RED SOX, '05 WHITE SOX, '06 Cardinals (83 wins)... these teams were not traditional powerhouses or were SEVERELY cursed!

Yet big media always wants to hold on to the past AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. They can't mention the Rays without the words "first time ever".

So the Dodgers and Red Sox must win so the writers can let the work do itself for them.

It's pathetic. Journalists should be rooting for the BEST story possible (Phillies - Rays who have one ring between them) not the easiest (Red Sox - Dodgers). Journalists wouldn't have to "educate" the mass of Red Sox fans or Dodgers fans...

The Bastards would put all their money on the Lions over the Christians if they had a deadline on it...

Experience means nothing. Most players have had postseason experience before, little league, high school, minors, whatever.

The game is the same, regardless of how many people are in the stands, regardless of who sings the national anthem. Once the first pitch is thrown, as far as the players are concerned they could be playing in an Iowa cornfield, all that matters is the game.

What DOES matter is how they deal with their nerves, and all the distractions that come with being in the postseason. It's one thing to be interviewed by Peter Gammons or Jayson Stark before a game, but when you all of a sudden have to deal with non essential stuff, that's when it gets out of hand.

Manny Ramirez gets to the park at 9am...for a night game. Does some cage work, hangs out, goes home for a nap, comes back early afternoon. Most guys do that, best way to avoid distraction is in the privacy of the clubhouse.

It doesn't matter how many postseason games Manny's played, or how many James Loney hasn't, because they've played a thousand games before.

You say they all have experience and that's why they're prepared, but yet that means nothing? Experience does count for something, as long as you learned from it. Job interviews, picking up hookers, hitting curve balls, all get easier with experience. I can only surmise that playoff baseball is the same. Does it mean everything? Certainly not, it can work for you or against you, but it does mean SOMETHING.

I think Kelsdad means its really all the same. When player X was playing for the state title, it was the biggest game of his life up until then...so if he couldn't play well then, he probably wouldn't be here right now...

People will suggest that the World Series and a State Title Game are a little different (which is true), but the way a person reacts isn't all that different...i mean consider the entire High School microcosm; its not the most important thing in the world, but it sure felt like it was then.

Now distractions (as he also mentioned) are a different story...

I'm not trying to be difficult, but many of these major leaguers were infinitely more talented than some of the guys they faced in the high school playoffs, and they knew it. At this level some guys may know it or think it, but I don't see it as the same. If you debated in high school it would be foolish to assume you'd be prepared for a presidential debate (vice presidential maybe), so why would we apply the same logic here?
