Philadelphia Sports Fans...YOU STINK!!!

W.C. Fields once said, “I once spent a year in Philadelphia…I think it was on a Sunday.”  Ah yes, the majesty that is Philadelphia, the festering dung heap of Pennsylvania.  A city so appealing it makes nearby Camden, New Jersey look like Shangri La.  Words do not begin to convey the loathing the rest of sporting America has for “The City of Brotherly Love.”  Go on, boo your Phillies during Game 3 of a 162 game season...morons!

Image:Philly fans 2.jpg

The nation’s sixth largest city harbors some of the most futile franchises in sports history.  Of the 23 worst records in MLB history, nine were played in Philadelphia.  The Philadelphia 76ers still own the worst season in NBA history.  The Philadelphia Phillies are still the losingest franchise in the history of North American sports and perpetrators of two of the most infamous late season collapses in MLB history.

But not everything in Philly is all bad. The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the best franchises in the NFL despite not having won a championship since 1960.  The Philadelphia Flyers have the second best team win percentage in NHL but haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1975.

Yes, one can make a colorable argument Philadelphia is a retched atmosphere for sports.  In its history Philly has sixteen professional sports championships from the big four North American sports leagues, last in 1983.  But this is the same city that booed Donovan McNabb on draft day…on national television; the same city that pelted Santa Clause with snow balls…on national TV; the same city that saw Connie Mack sell off two pennant winning teams and broke the hearts of thousands…in the national spotlight; the same city that has cheered when players on opposing teams get injured…to national derision; the same city whose Phillies refused to sign black players for a full decade after Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier…to nationwide contempt.

Philadelphia was awarded a MLS franchise, to begin play in 2010.  Rumor has it the franchise moniker will be “You suck!”

Now there’s no arguing Philly sports fans are deeply passionate and rabid about their rooting interests.  However, this is tempered by the outride rudeness they exhibit literally on a daily basis and their arrogant meanness that belies their self professed encyclopedic knowledge of their respective favored sons’ history.  Quite frankly their malignancy smears what otherwise would be a mass of fans who would challenge the supremacy of any such conglomerate in the country.  They are boisterous, proud, and knowledgeable.  They are also conceited, belligerent, and overtly hostile towards their own favored sons, a hostility that borders on stupidity.

There are fan bases who are exponentially more apathetic; Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Las Angeles, any city in Arizona, and Miami come to mind.  Some are more vicious; Oakland, Chicago, and New York.  Some are more arrogant; New York, Boston, and Washington.  Some are more ignorant; Atlanta, Detroit, and Houston.  But none melds all that is negative about sports fans like Philadelphia, a nearly perfect symmetry of arrogance, hostility, and viciousness, minus the apathy.

Gone are the days when the argument could be made that a few bad apples are spoiling the lot.  Not when you Philadelphia fans exhibit such infamously bad conduct with such stunning regularity.

Now before you burry me in a deluge of Philadelphia wisdom let me stir the pot further.  There is nothing endearing about a Philly sports fan, except to say that eventually they’ll leave the arena.  You’re not quaint, cute, eccentric, quirky, or any other innocuous adjective.  You’re simply intolerable.  To call upon a gardening simile; you’re all a festering bin of compost with dull, blighted weeds growing from the center.

I now retire to the comforts of my living room and await the salvo of Philly witticism that assuredly will cement your status.

What I always find quite interesting is that when I listen to sports radio abound, it never quite matches the Philadelphian twang I'm used to...

For one, in Philly you always commentate on what's bad...its never "that was great, how about that walkoff" or "wow, what a terrific effort in the loss." Instead its always trouble...even in the best of times. Super Bowl 39 was filled with tons of "Will McNabb Choke," "Can TO Play" etc etc...

Living in Boston, its almost just the opposite, though they're constant winning probably has a lot to do with that...

I just can't fully get it...but the end result is negativity, but I wouldn't give it up...its about the journey, not the goal...

The "legends" about Philly fans are ALL blown out of proportion. And Philly fans LOVE it. They know that opponents are more afraid in Philthadelphia than in Oakland - it's called respect...

Don't confuse a lack of class with intelligence.

Einstein had horrible fashion sense and was a bumbling fool in public. Thomas Jefferson was a sex fiend. Stephen Hawking has a foul (computerized) mouth and tremendous attitude problem. Thomas Edison was intolerable. George Washington Carver had severe farting problems - and was proud of it. Nikolas Tesla often masturbated in public. Ken Jennings (the Jeopardy guy) voted for John Kerry.

Intelligence and coeuth are not bedfellows.

Passion and reverence for their teams? In Boston? Just not their players. Ask Boston fans about Bill Buckner. Nice reverence there. Sorry, Pip, I have no problem with Boston fans - this is simply to make the point that there's good and bad all over. And New York fans - how about that reverence for Eli Manning? Or Tom Coughlin? Oh - but wait...they won. Maybe they're not so bad after all. Again, nothing against NY fans, just making a point. Now, Colorado based fans...that's another story.

Philly is also the birthplace of Doo Wop music, the Italian Ice, the pretzel and lest we not forget, the Cheesesteak.

Professional sports teams have left New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Atlanta, and so on.

How many pro teams have left Philly? One. The Warriors moved to San Francisco, but only because the city got a big payoff from the NBA (to expand out West) and the promise of an expansion team, which they got.

Needless to say, the pro sports landscape would be much worse off without Philadelphia.

I still consider Orioles fans as the classiest, most in tune with the action and most intelligent single fanbase and it makes me sad how that team has been treated by it's ownership.

But I'll take DC football fans over Baltimore football fans because most Baltimore football fans rooted for the Steelers when the Colts left.

But if I was to list all the North American towns with at least one pro team that have "smarter" fans than Boston or NY...

Aw hell, here it is - (BTW - I am working on a book idea on this very subject)

Philly, DC, Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Buffalo, Detroit, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal (Yes, Montreal),Milwaukee/Green Bay, Minneapolis, St Louis, Kansas City, Memphis/Nashville, New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Denver, Salt Lake City, Oakland, San Jose, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Sacramento.

I would even add Louisville, Kentucky if the Colonels were still around or if the Derby counts!

Then NYC, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Jacksonville,

then Boston, Charlotte, Phoenix, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta, San Francisco, eventually Las Vegas, Mexico City or Monterrey, Mexico...

and lastly Chicago - the town where a World Series was won while the "hometown" fans rooted for the Cubs...

People in Philly HAVE TO BE PASSIONATE about sports!!! There's no other reason (than food) to live there!!! They drink Schuylkill River Punch for "wuter". They get the worst of all four seasons - floods every spring, droughts every summer, hurricanes and wind every fall and blizzards all winter.

They have horrendous traffic on windy roads that were the same paths the Lenape Indians followed deer on paved over, they are a group of people that think a two hour drive "down the shore" is a real vacation!

They have pollution, radiation, flooded basements and radon leaking up through the cracks too. They have high cancer rates and EPA superfund sites dotting the lanscape. On top of that, there's Camden and lots of big hair from Jersey.

Philadelphians don't enjoy losing - they LOATHE it. They aren't lovable losers, they are gracious winners who get ephing pissed when they can't show their grace once every 25 years!!!

It IS the city of brotherly love! Where a homeless man can sleep to another homeless man in the concourse in each other's piss. Where the police aren't afraid to drop bombs in your neighborhood and where the mafia doesn't pretend to be in legitimate business.

In philadelphia, an Eagles fan can go from chucking snowballs in the Vet to being Governor.

It's more than just a town that Ben Franklin roamed, it's a town where Ben Franklin got syphillis! It was the capital of the US long before NYC stopped being over run by the Dutch and even longer before DC was just a mosquito brothel... well, DC still is...

If you attack Philly, you are attacking the very core of humanity - a place where a man can bust his ass for 14 hours a day and come home to pop a Yuengling and his blue collar and scream at his wife and TV simultaneously.

Philly is dirt, it is grit, it is blood, it is the essence of giving it your all because that's all you got (unless you work for PennDOT - then you just stand around all day)

If you don't respect or understand Philly fans it's because other things are more important in your life than sports. Sports is ALL Philly fan has of value in life - and it's ALL Philly fan wants.

The fact that Barack Obama has been on Philadelphia Sports Radio 610 multiple times in hope to win over votes shows how important sports truly are in Philadelphia, they gain precedent over news stations.

Your social experiment with the great fans of Philadelphia borders on stupidity. Much like poking a sleeping bear. Why?

It's not that I don't get what you're attempting to do. It's just my inability to stifle the same way I respond to anyone who dares denigrate my town:

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I boo you.

I boo anyone wearing an opponent’s team merchandise.

I am non discriminatory in my booing, outside of your public acknowledgement of supporting the Philadelphia opposition.

I boo Flyers opponents and Sixers adversaries. I boo Villanova and Temple fans equally.

My right to boo shall never be stripped. I can boo the father - son combo who wears Raiders jerseys to an Eagles game. Or, I can boo the old-timer who's been going to games all over the country since 1948 and really is a fan of the Washington Senators. Hell, I even boo family members who root for other teams.

My personal favorites are the morons who wear out of town sports gear during the wrong season. Ok, I get it, you like the Cowboys. Didn't anyone tell you that wearing that crap to a Phillies game in the summer time is just plain provoking a negative response? I'm sure it would shock you more if I came up and congratulated you for your bravado. Boo.

Trust me, I see tons of Eagles apparel being worn at Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers games. It happens all the time. Maybe Joey from Fishtown, being the 'first time - long time' that he is, doesn’t own any other gear, but loves Philadelphia all the same. It could be the family who’s child just got into hockey and refuses to take off that Flyers gear no matter what game they have tickets for. Could be that dude who has that brand new flat brimmed Phillies hat, but rocks it at a Sixers game.

Callous? Boo Impolite? Boo Too drunk and maybe profane? I'll give you that one. But BOO anyway.

Boo you Shrubbery. Boo you for making me type such a long goddamned response. I hope you get carpal tunnel syndrome. There, I said it.

One last thing: I cheer 110% harder for than I boo at my beloved Philadelphia sports franchises and colleges and universities. It's called pride.

Why does one group of fans have to better than another? We're all fans, aren't we? Why can't we all just love sports for what they are, and express our love however the hell we want?

For the record, I adore all of my friends that are Philly fans. They're smart, they're passionate, and above all, they won't take crap from someone trying to bring them down (see above).

As a Boston fan, the sheer and utter stupidity of some gives the rest of us something to laugh at. We have our stupid moments (who doesn't?), but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Boston, MA...forever happy being New York's little bitch.

What I can't stand, being that I live in the Philly TV region, is that their local tv station, their announcers are such homers, it's disgusting. If the Philly team wins, it's because they are so good and deserve to win...if they lose, it's not because they other team is good, it's because there is some stupid little excuse, like Donovan McNabb overslept the previous Tuesday and couldn't recover from missing some practice and that's why they lost...It's garbage like that that makes me sick.

heh, that's true of every region...i loathe boston for the same thing, but I've slowly realized that that's just the way it is You may think everyone in Philly thinks that, but most know exactly why they lost and they're rarely afraid to tell you who it is...

The media members in Phoenix are clueless either way! (Except for Brad Steinke)

Phoenix is lucky to have high quality ex-athletes as members of the media (Ron Woofley, Mark Grace, Eddie Johnson, Dan Majerle) because all the media schmucks are idiots (except YOU, Brad Steinke!) and morons.

You know what sucks......Non-philly fans writing about philly fans. Give me an f'in break already. We've earned the right to boo, cheer, and do whatever else we want. This is our house, outsiders are NOT welcome. Everyone knows this, so anyone showing up in an opponents jersey must realize and therefor welcome what they are about to receive. You don't like that, stay home.....the game is on TV somewhere.

Philly fans are the best fans- it's been over 100 seasons since a title give or take (83 sixers is approx 25 yr w/ all 4 major sports teams minus a few strike seasons). You hear about great fans like the cubs.....what?! Real trendy to go to the upscale side of chicago amongst the brownstones and cheer for the loveable losers. Meanwhile, that city has at least 8 championships since our last to cheer (6 bulls, 1 bears, 1 whitesox). Really, I feel terrible for the people in Chicago. Same thing goes for Boston before the sox won with all those celtic teams, the pats, etc

Every, let me say that again, EVERY city boos their team when their not playing well- doesn't matter if your boston or ny, detroit or chicago. The bad wrap is as tired as our title drought. We're bad fans bc we boo and get on our teams (I can't believe santa claus hasn't come up yet even though 99/100 people outside of philly can't tell the story), but no one ever talks about Det fans who jump on fields and beat up 1st base coaches or pick fignts w/ NBA teams.

You show me a city who doesn't boo when their team is playing bad, and I'll show you a polo match.

You know.....I have to laugh and cheer and maybe even boo at some or all these comments. But the subject got everyone emotional in one way or the other. And for me I think that is what fun being a sports fan is. I am not proud of everything my fellow Philly fans have done. Not ashamed at the Santa Claus incident. Kind of think it is cool. Don't like him since he stopped bringing me toys. But I am proud to be a fan. The passion we have. And never forget that these players are being paid and you should expect results. So thank you Scrubby for starting this. This was enjoyable to read. I love controversy.

Attend a sporting event in Philly and get back to us. I once took a group of customers to a Flyers game. I'll admit it was the only time in my life that I was afraid to wear my team colors (Note: the Pens weren't playing). But regardless of what shirt I was wearing it was one of the more memorable sporting events I have attended. I can think of a lot of cities that don't come close to the passion I saw that night. Philly fans may bitch and moan, but then again, so does my wife. Does that mean she doesn't love me? No. It means she wishes I knew how to put a dish in the dishwasher. Philly fans just wish there teams knew how to win more championships, but there love of there teams is unwavering.

One of our former Philadelphia Athletics once stated, "If you can't be loved, hated ain't bad." Shrubbery, you loveable curmudgeon, why even bother commenting on the Philly demeanor? Our lack of decorum and the ill treatment we accord opposition teams and their fans is an old and tired subject. Not worthy of comment any longer. Only a person who is crying out for help would dwell on the obvious and foster an obsession such as yours. Tell us, we want to help. Are you trying to excise some deep seated wound inflicted by a guy from Philly who rejected your advances? Why all the hatred? Really, we want to know the source of your anger. Tell us, you'll feel better. Yeh right. Crawl in your hole you cretin, and take all the other goiter idiots with you. What a maroon!
