Pens vs Sabres preview 12.29.07

More like, a preview to the preview I suppose. Normally I'd say the NHL schedule is a travesty, but I think having a game where these two faceoff only days before the outdoor Winter Classic was a semi-decent move on their part. I feel it gives both teams a chance to treat the Ice Bowl more like a playoff series than just another game.

With that in mind, let's take a look at what the Pens have in store.

Although there's been no official word on it yet, I wouldn't be surprised to see Thibault get the nod on either of the games. Having spent a few years with the Pens up until the 2007 trade to Buffalo, Thibault probably has a good mental book written on all of the Pens. He's 2-2 on the season, which is no surprise when sitting back-up to Ryan Miller. Yet it's likely to see T-Bo in net before the year is over.

In their last game against the Senators, the Sabres lost for only the first time in seven games. In case you needed help with the math, that's a six-game win streak. Their offense can put up numbers, and their defense can just as well keep them out. With the Pens' Mark Eaton being out for an indefinite period of time with a torn ACL, Pitt is going to lack a bit in the shot block category. Either someone is going to have to really step it up (IE Scuderi/Sydor) or the Pens' best bet is to play tight on the man.

For both sides of the puck, not taking penalties is going to be crucial to winning this game. The Sabres pack a punch with the man advantage, ranked 7th in the league on the power play. The Pens aren't far off in the 11th seed with nearly a .5 differential in percentage between the two.

Back in September I never thought I'd be saying this, but hell I'll say it anyways. Ty Conklin is 3-0 as a starter. Not bad for a 31-year old guy who's been a back and forth player between the minors and Daddy clubs. Since 2005 Conklin has been in four different team sweaters (Edmonton, Columbus, Buffalo and Pitt) but may have found a solid home in Pitt. Considering the temporary duties, I think it's safe to say he's doing a stand up job.

Offensively the Pens have been holding their own. The comeback from behind win last night against the Caps can be seen two ways. One way is to beat them senseless for their mistakes (particularly Gonch). The other, and possibly more proactive way is to pat them on the back for making up for their mistakes and finishing the game off with a win (particularly Gonch). I'll choose the latter.

Pens vs Sabres tonight at home in Pitt. Disk drops at 7:38 p.m.

Excellent preview. I must admit that I wasn't aware enough of how much better Buffalo has been playing lately. Providing a little subplot with Jocelyn Thibault is certainly a good one and worth keeping tabs on. No offense, but I seem to be looking past tonight's game because of my excitement for Tuesday's rematch. Another thing, you can only hope Darryl Sydor does step it up because I think he's been a disappointment since he signed as a free agent.

I agree with you to an extent with regards to Sydor. Sure, he's been a bit of a disappointment, but I also think the guy didn't get a fair amount of ice time before he was scratched. He came to the team as a defensive defenseman, which on the roster of offensive threats isn't exactly a bad thing. Last season Sydor only had 21 points with the Stars. In fact his best seasons were with Dallas back in 96/97 and 98/99 where he tallied only 48 points. Perhaps a lot of people were expecting another Sergei Gonchar instead of a fitting defensive guy.

Sydor stepped up against the Caps the other night, I hope it continues. Thibault just played last night I think, so I really don't expect to see him again any time soon, but that is based on nothing other than my opinion. Hopefully Gonchar starts to gel with Scuderi a little. According to an interview with the Post-Gazette, he thinks he will. Excellent article once again Frank.

Yeah I wrote the preview before the Devils game, so I wasn't sure if we'd see Thibault or not tonight. I think it's funny how they are trying to find the perfect fit for Gonchar. It's like saying you can't force a round peg into the square hole. Personally, I think promoting Whitney to the line with Gonch would provide a formidable left/right blueline attack while on the power play.

I'll choose the latter as well. Excellent preview article. T-Bo doesn't scare me. We got rid of him for a reason. Sydor has has been a little disappointing but not terrible. Anyone know whats going on with Malone? I miss him. Anyways, GO PENS!!

Malone will be back in the line-up tonight. He had the flu or something listed as simply an 'illness'. I'm not scared of Thibault either. If I'm not mistaken, in one of his two losses he was routed for about 6 or 7 goals. So with that in mind, I'd almost welcome a Thibault start.

Yeah I guess Malone had an infection from a cut on his leg. But glad he's back tonight. I just looked up Thibault's action this year. 12 goals given up in 4 games. One of those he shutout Montreal though. Still not an issue. I hope they start him as well.
