Pens Fall in Heartbreaker

Coming off an impressive win over Montreal, the Penguins were looking to complete their ascension up the Eastern Conference with a win over Ottawa at home today. The Pens could have grabbed a share of the #1 spot in the East with a regulation win today, and it looked good for Pittsburgh early. After taking a 3-0 lead with 12:47 to go in the 2nd period, the Pens were playing solid hockey and it looked as if Pittsburgh was on its way to the top. However, the Senators showed why they were sitting atop the East and why they had dominated the Pens last year in the first round of the playoffs. Ottawa ran off four straight goals, the final one coming from Captain Daniel Alfredsson with four seconds left in the overtime period. Although Pittsburgh had blown the lead and lost hope of vaulting the Sens in the standings, it at least looked like they would have a decent shot at winning in a shootout. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh fans, the Senators fought to the final seconds, taking advantage of a rebounded shot in the waning seconds of overtime. The Penguins now sit at 4th in the East but are only two points behind the first place Senators. The Sharks come to town to battle the Pens tomorrow.
