The Pittsburgh Penguins successfully moved into a first place tie with the Flyers in the Atlantic Division tonight with a 4-2 win over the Devils. Regardless of tonight's outcome, the proximity of teams and points in the division prove to be head-to-head till the very last game of the season.

The first period was a bit nerve racking at times but good nonetheless. Rupp's (who?!) goal in the first was just a garbage goal past a diving Conklin. Considering how solid the Devils' power play looked at this point, I was a little nervous about any future ones.

Thankfully the first came and went with only a small Devils' lead. The Pens looked pretty shaky in the first, but would definitely pick up the pace heading into the second down 1-0.

In fact, they'd waste no time. Jordan Staal received credit for a goal that looked pretty absurd in-person and even more ridiculous on the replay. I hardly remember seeing where he touched the puck, but it slipped pass Brodeur regardless to tie it up. I know there was also some question to it because it wasn't until 5 or 10 minutes later that they added Talbot and Christensen on for helpers.

It'd be another 12 minutes or so before the game would see its next goal. Unfortunately it came off the stick of a Devil - Mike Rupp (who?!) again to be exact. The jumbo-tron flashed up Rupp's stats, and I have to admit - I laughed. Only against the Penguins does a guy who has been scoreless all season score his first and second goals. Never fails.

It's ok though, he wouldn't celebrate for long. Less than a minute later the Pens charged back. The puck gets mishandled in the Devils' zone and Christensen winds up with it in front of the net. Did he ever fool Brodeur out of his pads. A quick slip of the mitts and the puck trickled pass Marty to tie it up yet again.

By this point the Penguins were holding their own, although playing a game of catch-up hardly works in the NHL. With that in mind, the Pens decided to put the Devils to the test; and Ryan Malone was the teacher.

capt.2a02eef2bf4f4403a440696cbfec44d7.penguins_devils_hockey_njrs104.jpg

Malone continued the second period scoring on a dish from Sykora/Malkin to get the quick and small edged 3-2 lead heading into the third.

In the third period, still ahead 3-2 and looking to add more security, Gonchar finds Sykora who finds Malone for the 4-2 power play goal. Special thanks to Sergei Brylin on that one. His contributions from the Devils' penalty box were truly a test of his character.

Thanks Sergei...

From there-on-in the Pens dominated the puck, shutdown the power plays and continued to pressure Brodeur even when it seemed obvious the win was in there hands. Therrien must've given them a good speech after the first, because they sure as hell played the game like another team from the second period on.

Solid play from Malone and hey, let's also give a nod to Christensen. Hopefully he can keep this motivation going tomorrow night at the Pens head into Atlanta. Lord knows the team needs to scoring depth.

Some faces you didn't see tonight - Kris Beech, Colby Armstrong and Adam Hall.

Kris Beech has apparently been facing some issues with his visa at the border into the states. I guess even the border guards can't believe he was traded between three teams in less than a week.

Colby is out with symptoms of the flu, but according to the medical staff they are not ruling out the possibility of mono. When you think about it, the flu might be a bad bug to get around the locker room, but mono + shared water bottles = disaster. Here's the hoping it's just the flu.

And finally, despite having time to heal up during the break, Adam Hall is still struggling with what has been dubbed a groin pull. Let's hope he doesn't take the path of the Blackhawks' Justin Williams, who has recently been sidelined with a sports hernia. Initially, it was diagnosed as a groin pull.

With the win tonight the Pens passed New Jersey in the Atlantic Division standings. Unfortunately, the Flyers also won over the Kings. Now, both Pitt and Philly are tied for first, while the Devils still loom close behind. These are the moments in the playoff race that really drive you crazy. Luckily the Pens let Philly get their wins out of the way early in the season, because there won't be many more for them to rely on for the rest of this year.

Pens vs Thrash tomorrow night in Hotlanta.

eh, by a point. it was late and I can't add. But like I said, it doesn't matter much right now in that division. The leads going to change 200+ times by the end of the season. Thanks for pointing it out though. enjoy it while you have it.

What a bizarre game. First goal for the Devils...strange bounce. First goal for Pens...strange bounce. Second goal for Devils...strange bounce. Second goal for the Pens...strange bounce (although Chrtianson's move after the strange bounce was pretty nifty).

As usual, I thought the officiating was pretty horrendous. The penalty on Gionta was absurd as replays show it clearly wasn't boarding. The call on Brylin was questionable especially considering the two handed chop on Martin just seconds before.

Frank, what did you think of the stadium? I really dig it. Will be at the game on Sunday.

Congrats to the Pens on a good win without Sid the Kid.

I don't like the new place at all. This is my second time there and neither time has been all too pleasant. The parking situation sucks (and is $25 for a street lot). There is also a ton of traffic because of how the TPK just exits onto local streets in Newark. Every game day is a fiasco because police have to shut down streets and redirect traffic all over Newark. In another year or two it shouldn't be as bad if they DO build the city up around the arena like they said they will. But as of right now - if you can take public transportation in, do it.

This type of thing is going to happen all season. I didn't even think the LaRoque hit was a penalty.

i think when you compare it to the bergeron hit, they look the same...except downie got up...

You can't fault a player for having his neck in one position or another...but one of the commenters noted the NHL's history of penalties based on aftermaths...which is utterly true...

Personally, I think this injuring business sucks...its more trouble than its worth...but its nice to see some mean, nasty hockey out there...If there's one benefit, its that opponents do think twice...

I'll be interested to see what happens come playoff time...because we all know they late the players play a little bit more...but will this affect the flyers positively or negatively...

I think when you compare Laraques hit to Jones hit they are only similar at best. Jones rode Bergeron all the way into the boards with his fore arms pushing his head into the boards. Jones finished his check, Laraque pushed Downie towards the boards and did not put a finished check into him. Personally I thought there would be a suspension because it was a hit from behind, but to say the look the same is absurd.

I don't see any comparison. LaRoque was lined up to hit Downie from the side, completely legally. Downie stopped short thus exposing his back to Laroque. The crucial difference is that Jones had more than enough time to pull back from the hit, Laroque did not. I understand the penalty that was called, but I didn't think it was a penalty and I definately don't think it deserved any action by the league.

I actually just saw that article earlier today. I think sometimes Flyers fans think they are on the receiving end of a shitty hand, and personally I think to some extent they are right. But in the Laraque situation, had that been Danny Brierre instead of Downie, I'd wager any amount of money that Laraque would have been suspended. But since it was Downie, a player notorious for dirty play, it was considered unspoken fair game. There were also a couple of articles out there suggesting that Downie may have taken a dive. Although I'd like to think someone would be insane to dive head first into the boards to draw a penalty, again - this is Downie we're talking about.

actually...with respect to the downie/Briere thing, Matt says that right in the article...Laraque didn't get a punishment because it was Downie...

To which I say - the NHL really has to get a book and/or system to follow on this sort of thing. I used Brierre as an example simply because he's a 'star' in the league. But who's to say some guy getting rocked head first isn't? And trust me, as much as I hate Downie for being a Flyer, and as much as I'd not even want him in and/or around my team, I respect the fact that leading up to that game he was on a 7-game point streak. But regardless, his stats will always be overlooked for his hits and dirty moves. I guess at this point it's kind of a moot point to argue over the hit, seeing as how no amount of doing so will not change the outcome. But as a Penguins fan, and more importantly a hockey fan, I think there should be some solid foundation to the suspension/check in the back debacle that has really been plaguing the league this season.

I really don't agree. I don't think he got a suspension becuase it was a borderline penalty at best. 1) Laroque didn't hit him particularly hard making the play look embellished; 2) Downie turned away from the hit exposing his back at the last second. If Downie continues with the play and circles the net instead of stopping short and turning at the last second, the hit is a perfectly legal one.

yeah...the Rangers are the only team that I'm not extremly concerned with...but they still could turn it around (perhaps a jagr trade?!)...but the division, top to bottom, is the best...if any one of those teams were in the south, they'd probably have above 70 points...

This East is definitely a hot bed as far as standings go, but for once the West is also picking up the pace. Currently three times are tied with 56 points. It's even possible, based on the standings, that Chicago still has a legitimate shot at a run - they're currently ranked 14th with 50 points, yet only six points away from a playoff spot. I love this part of the season.

Jut - I just heard a rumor today alleging that Forsberg may become a Ranger after some moves are made to open up cap room. According to Eklund from Hockeybuzz, Forsberg is interested in the Rangers, Flyers and Red Wings. I wouldn't blow it too far out proportion though, because this guy is notorious for starting rumors that never come to fruition. I just thought I'd throw it out there since you mentioned the Rangers. I'm sure they're looking for whatever they can to make themselves a threat again.

Oh I couldn't agree more MJD. I like to look and see what he talks about, but I hardly ever reference it. My collection of comments in this particular post is exactly why no one should. The rumors and news change constantly just so he can keep drawing people in. Yellow journalism at its best - only Internet style.

Especially he prefaces his posts with this little diatribe:

"Get More Inside Info! Get a Season Ticket to Hockeybuzz.com for only 20 bucks and get full access to the Rumour Chart, Chat Room, Fantasy Games and More...Thanks for Supporting Hockeybuzz!"

Yes - now I will pay for the rumors that aren't true.
