The Pens, 8-0-1 in their last nine games, are back in Pitt tonight to take on the New York Rangers in what will be the fifth match-up of the season. Heading into tonight's game, the Rangers lead the series with a dominating 3-1 lead.

The last time these two met up, the Rangers no doubt dominated in a 4-0 shutout victory. The Pens were unable to get any action whatsoever in the Rangers' zone and Dany Sabourin was on his last leg as the Pens' starter.

I venture to day that tonight will be an entirely different game.

Ty Conklin has yet to lose a regulation game. The recent overtime loss to Atlanta on Saturday put his season record at 9-0-1 with two shutouts.

Seeing as how the Pens were scoreless in their last effort against the Rangers AND how it was the first and only time thus far they were shutout, let's rewind one more game to the November 17 overtime loss.

Pitt fired out of the gate early to take a 2-0 lead. If you've been following the Pens all season, then you may recall their incompetence in controlling and maintaining a two goal lead. (See also: Colorado on November 1, Islanders on November 3 and ultimately the Rangers on November 8). Needless to say, this didn't bode well for the Pens. From having the lead 2-0 at the end of the first, the Pens were down 3-2 heading into the third period. Ultimately Sykora would net the tying goal to send it into overtime. It would be good for just a point though as Rangers defenseman Jason Strudwick put the nail in the coffin on a shot past Fleury to not only score his first goal of the season but also seal the win for the Rangers.

Again, and I don't mean to sound like this is ignorance speaking, but that was then and this is now. Fleury was in net then - Conklin is in net now. The Pens took seven penalties that game - the Pens have taken a combined seven penalties in their last three games. They've been playing a much more disciplined game and it certainly shows.

How have the Rangers been playing lately? I'll allow Cityhockeyfever from Cup Crazy's NHL Blog to explain.

Prior to last night [1-12-08], the Rangers had lost 12 of their last 17 (since December 3rd) and fallen out of the top 8 in the East. Henrik at times during that stretch had been very un-King Henrik-like with a handful of soft goals or even bad goals given up to the opposition. At one point, his goals-against-average was around 1.6, I think and now it's at least 2.3. The deciding goal he allowed in Calgary on January 2nd was one that really has stuck in my mind.

The goal he describes can be seen here at the 5:10 mark.

You weren't being ignorant. You're right. That was then and this is now. The Penguins and Rangers have been going in opposite directions since the last meeting. And whether or not the season series trend will continue is a complete guessing game. Thanks for the reference, by the way. I wish that highlight package showed a behind-the-net camera angle replay of that Kristian Huselius goal I was talking about. Lundqvist played it poorly as I said to you on your game recap of the Penguins' loss in Atlanta. By the way, through the Rangers' first 45 games of this season in which they're 21-24, Lundqvist's goals-against-average has officially ballooned to 2.37 and surprisingly that's still 11th-best in the NHL. His 19 wins is tied for 6th, but has dropped six behind Evgeni Nabokov for the lead. But a save percentage of .907 now, it's down to 22nd place overall. But he's still 2nd in the NHL with 6 shutouts. He can turn his season around back to stellar numbers and be considered for the Vezina Trophy, but it's going to take a spectacular second half of the season for it to happen. He'll need to play big tonight against your Penguins though to prove it. Ty Conklin is playing very well as you've stated and I won't be surprised if the Rangers have a difficult time scoring on him. But I don't believe you should bank everything on this guy to get your team deep into the playoffs. He'd have to have a career year to accomplish that.

Considering Lundqvist's SP% and GAA, yet still being ranked 11th overall, really does a lot to shoot down the NHL's theory that there isn't enough scoring in the games. If a guy can go on a short drought like that and still be where he is, then it's the same thing with every other goalie in the league as well.

My personal favorite part of Rangers/Penguins games is listening to the crowd boo everytime Jagr touches the puck. It takes a special kind of fan to be angry for so long.

Yup, I love it. And luckily this one is in front of the Pitt crowd so we'll be hearing plenty of that tonight.

Nice preview Frank. And as of now, I wouldn't say I'm banking on Conklin but you have to admit...he's finding a way to win games. I think he would do fine in the playoffs. I know there are higher scoring teams in the Eastern conferece but Pens are playing well and I'm loving it. Frank I know what you are talking about with them giving up 2-goal leads. Heartbreaking. Oh and nice avatar SteelTown. Go PENS!!

He's 9-0-1. By the numbers I think it's safe to say, like you said yourself, that he's getting the job done. No doubt about that. But similar to what CHF said above, he may not be the answer to our playoff woes. Although last season was Fleury's first appearance in the playoffs, I think he can handle it better with the experience taken from the Ott. loss to really turn things around. He's going to have to. Especially if he wants an extension come the end of the season...

He may not, but then again maybe he is. I know he's only played in 11 games but his GAA is 1.79! Only time will tell. Hopefully, I am right. Both because I want the Pens to do well and also because I like being right. :)

The thing about Conklin is that he had a long stint as a starting goalie in the NHL. As everyone else has said, I wouldn't feel comfortable with him as my goalie in the playoffs, but every NHL goalie is capable of going on a hot streak. Just look at the Hurricanes a few years back. Against a much better Devils team, Kevin Weekes, basically a career backup throughout his career, took over in goal and shut the Devils down completely.

Oh I agree MJD. Conk is on a hot streak. I don't expect him to play like this til the end of the season or anything. I guess I'm just riding the wave. It will be interesting to see what happens when Fleury is healthy though.

Congratulations on the victory tonight, guys. This game is undoubtedly over as I'm simply going to turn it off before I get more aggravated. I'm not being a sore loser, just stating the dose of reality that has set in.
