When I turned on NBC and saw the snow falling down in such rapid speed I figured, "Man, this is going to blind the goalies. Final score 17-15 Pens." Considering the Penguins scored on an Crosby to Armstrong goal within the first 21 seconds of the game, my half-serious comment started to take a more honest tone.

From then on in it was a series of stoppages in play to repair the ice. From CO2 cans to buckets of water, each teams' star players were given the opportunity to rest up. Zambonis and teams of shovelers cleared the ice during commercial breaks, but the weather seemed to take its toll on the ice. In fact, it was really starting to impact the play. Attempts to clear the zone took more effort than usual. A casual wrister to the other end had to be taken with some extra force, often more of a lift than a slide to clear the puck. Why you ask? The snow piling up on the ice of course.

Behind the nets, where 'snow' normally gathers during regular indoor games, looked more like a snow bank in which the puck just died entirely. Scenes during the game showed Malkin slipping up when in the Sabres' zone and towards the end of the game even hindered the Sabres' attempts to win in regulation thanks to unusually mishandled pucks fighting against the elements.

The Pens may have jumped out to an early burst in the first period, but the Sabres absolutely dominated the second. That was more than evident by the shot count: Sabres 14 to the Penguins 2. Heading into the third, the score was tied at one thanks in part to an early second period goal from Brian Campbell.

By the third period the goaltending duel had risen to epic proportions. Ryan Miller stopped all 12 shots faced, while Ty Conklin looked like he was on the receiving end of a firing squad. As explained prior to the game, a stoppage of play awaited at the 10-minute mark of the third so as to allow the teams to switch sides and evenly pair them against Mother Nature. The same switch would be made two and a half minutes into overtime, but not until after the Sabres nearly won it in regulation in the dying seconds of the third.

Overtime came and went, starting with a full two-minute power play for the Sabres that found Colby Armstrong in the box for a hooking call after the last whistle of the third. Ty Conklin stopped all seven overtime shots and Jordan Staal was the unsung hero during the faceoff wins in the Pens' zone. Despite not having any shots on net in overtime the Pens managed to stick it out and draw the shootout. With the shootout series tied 1-1, Captain Crosby sealed the victory for the Pens beating Ryan Miller five hole on the last shot in the third round.

Overall it was an exciting game hindered only by short stalls in play to repair the ice mishaps from the outdoor atmosphere. The Sabres certainly played like the better team in the second half of the game, but the Pens stole this one right from under them in front of the home crowd in Buffalo. Either way you look at it, the Sabres earned that overtime point. Even Ray Shero joked earlier that each team should get a point just for playing. More importantly, Ty Conklin improved to 5-0 in net for the Pens, two of which have come in shootout victories. His outdoor record, previously winless as an Oiler against Montreal in 2003, improved to 1-1 with today's victory.

Next game is against the Leafs Thursday in Pitt. Some questions to come from Pension Plan Puppets along with a preview.

What say you of the Winter Classic? Did it do an efficient job at promoting the [new] NHL to the masses, or did it fall short and turn people off?

Fun game, although all the ice delays in the first period were a little painful. It should be interesting to see what the ratings are.

I watched the game on CBC, it was entertaining, and the NHL should do this more often.

Rumor has it the Pens and Flyers are facing off next season neutral grounds at Penn State's football field for another, and possibly annual outdoor game.

agreed...and i'd be willing to bet the whole event...tailgating and all could draw a potential 100,000 people... Hell, i'd go...

I tried like hell to get tickets, but my company security wouldn't let me get to the last screen on ticketmaster's website. Oh well, it looked very cold.

I think the NHL did well with this, considering that this is the second time they've done it. Granted, some of NBC's tech glitches in the 3rd period were bothersome but it was well worth the three hours I spent watching it instead of bowl games or "Law & Order" reruns.

I think the biggest opposition the league faced was that which was entirely out of their hands: Mother Nature. Had it been a snow-free game I believe there would've been less delays to fix the rink and less glitches in the broadcast. But hey, the 71,000+ fans didn't disappoint in enthusiasm, and the broadcasters all treated it like it was a playoff game. My only reservation was their presentation of Sidney Crosby. For any hockey fan, they know the guy is the real deal. But when they did that special on him after the first or second period, they re-introduced him to the world of people who may not know of him as the staple golden boy of the league. Little pretentious, and I'm saying that as a Pens fan.

As someone who doesn't watch much college football, it was great. I didn't have to watch two teams I don't care about. But, I'm sure it wasn't good for ratings.

At least they followed it up with Seal singing over an ice skating competition. With any luck, the differential in ratings will look like the Super Bowl compared to the Little League World Series.

I think the NHL hit a homerun with the Winter Classic. It was fun to watch, even for non-hockey fans. Outside of the first period ice problems the game was a joy to watch. Because of the seats being so far away they had a number of new and different camera angles. I know the weather wasn't good for the ice, but it was great as a fan to watch snow flurries come down on the players. My only problem with the game was all of the glitches in the broadcast. The NFL manages to broadcast in that weather all the time, couldn't the NHL have looked to them for advise. All in all, it was a great spectacle. I just hope they don't do it to much and take away all of the novelty of the event.

I agree. Once a year is fine by me. It's getting to a point now where teams are asking to be considered for the next outdoor game. I know the Bluejackets asked for consideration, but it sounds more like whining than anything else. Here's the article http://www.d...ml?print=yes

The camera that was at the end of the ice, but elevated about 10 or 15 feet above the boards was a good angle. It was close enough to grasp the action, but high enough so you could see everything going on at the other end of the ice.

Steely - I think at this point the NHL is realizing that 18-19K seating in an arena is good for the regular old home game sort of thing (unless you're the Devils), but football stadiums are the place to be. It's a setting fit for a once a year outdoor sort of thing, but there's no way 70,000 seats would sell out at a Pens home game. Maybe Toronto or Montreal, but the expense outweighs the profit on that one.

RawB - I think they held that camera angle for far too long. It was a nice change from the regular side view, but it doesn't show much going on in front of the net. For blueline slappers though it was pretty sweet.

And is it just me, or does every town in America now obnoxiously hold up signs claiming THEY are in Hockeytown, USA? I know Philly does constantly, and that's always good for a laugh. Yesterday a guy in Buffalo held a sign expressing the same. Detroit used to be known as Hockeytown, even having it matted on center ice. But this year it was agreed Minnesota is home to hockeytown. In the end though, does it even matter?

Detroit doesn't claim to be Hockeytown, Joe Louis Arena is located in a town officially called Hockeytown. It's not so much a disputable claim, it's a fact.

We could at least come up with some variations. Boston (laughably) calls itself the Hub of Hockey. Maybe Buffalo could be Hockey City. Minnesota could be Hockey Land. Toronto could be the Capital of Hockey. Edmonton could be Hockeyville. Pittsburgh could be Hockeyburg. Vancouver could be Hockeyport.

Well Rawb, let me respond to the Hub of Hockey thing...my roommate works for the marketing dept of the Bruins...he supplied 2 reasons when i made fun of him for it

1) Boston is known as the hub (which you know)

2) its waaaaay better than their old slogan "It's called bruins"...which was considerably hilarious because i'd always respond with: "What is? Sucking?"

I don't know if anyone caught it or not, but the NHL Network aired the full outdoor practice from both teams on New Year's Eve. I was only able to catch the first hour or so (unfortunately all Sabres), but they didn't break for a single commercial either. When the announcers took a lil break, the cameras just cut to the ice and showed the teams working out. But all in all I'd say the broadcast of the practice was comparable a parade-like atmosphere. All the setting missed was a giant float battle between Crosby and Miller.

I loved that game... I don't see anything the NHL could do for the rest of this season to top that... the greatest active NHL star, snow, outdoors, a massive crowd, tailgating like an NFL game (wish I were there), big hitting, fast moving game, and it all comes down to Sid the Kid on one last shoot-out attempt... It doesn't get much better than this...

I agree, I think it panned out exactly as the NHL wanted. Showcase their big star and have him win it in shootout fashion. It was almost like the cliche 2 out, tie score, empty bases, bottom of the 9th with a full count sort of thing.
