Well Pittsburgh's Cover Boy is back on another edition of The Hockey News. This makes two issues in two months, the first coming on November 6. In this issue, The Hockey News displays their ninth annual 100 People of Power and Influence.

Before we get to the list of noted notables, a poll was displayed earlier in the issue asking "Who is the most influential/powerful individual in the NHL?"

Here is how the poll broke down.

Gary Bettman - 30%
Wayne Gretzky - 29%
Sidney Crosby - 17%

Brian Burke, Colin Campbell, Ed Snider, Bill Daly, Paul Kelly and Jeremy Jacobs combined for 26%.

A later article titled "The King of The Castle" is a small article on Sid and his influence not only on the Pens but also throughout the league.

Another article, in the same issue I might add, is titled...well, it doesn't actually have a title. It's just part of this issue that seems to be dedicated entirely to Sid.

But finally, getting to the overall point of this post, the Top 100 Power and Influence Rankings according to THN. Basically, this is a look at players in the present, future and past who have started or are continuing to make a huge impact on the league. Who was number one you ask?

Do I really have to tell you?

Here is what THN had to say:
'P' stands for Prolific Penguin, Powerful Pitchman and Prime-time Producer. Crosby, 20, is the face of the NHL. He sells jerseys, fills stands and puts points on the board. Name another player who was the subject of a tug of war between Canadian and U.S. television networks in the 2007 playoffs. It's no coincidence the NHL is changing its schedule next season so Crosbymania will hit all 30 markets.

Other notables in the top 100 :
2 Gary Bettman
#6 Wayne Gretzky
#16 Brendan Shanahan
#24 Don Cherry (I hate that SOB)
#32 Vinny Lecavalier
#44 Scotty Bowman - Former Cup Coach reppin it
#45 Eric Lindros

Sorry - just had to.

51 Patrick Kane
#52 Marioooo Lemieuuuuux
#53 Mats Sundin
#61 Martin Brodeur
#69 Alexander Ovechkin

There's other people mentioned, obviously, to fill out the rest of the 100 but those are the ones I think are worth mentioning in this blog.

What say you of the extensive Crosby Coverage from THN? Is it too much, or are they in fact marketing "The Next One?"

What about Ovechkin? Do you think he deserves to be higher?

Ovechkin is one of the top two players in the league, yes. But what is his impact on hockey seems to be the question. I don't think his impact is all that great. He comes of as pompas to me. I do feel like they shove Crosby down our throats too much. It's similar to all of the Tom Brady ass kissing that goes on in the media. The winter classic was a great example of this.

Couldn't agree with ya more. As of matter of fact, Ovechkin just fired his agent and turned down a five-year-$35 Mil contract from the Caps. He won't play for anything less than $8-$9 Mil. I believe that would be your definition of pompous to a 'T'.

maybe it has more to do with Crosby being Hockey's Jesus more than anything else...

Of course, its not that Crosby is being forced down our throats (Steel Town), its that he's a likable and incredibly talented guy

As a flyers fan, I'm in the middle on him...because he is a great player and a leaguemaker kinda guy, but also I have to hate him because he plays for the pens (and makes them very good)

THe bottom line of that is great for hockey, as my hatred makes those types of games interesting and intense...sorta like sox fans hating derek jeter...

Agreed. I mean, I can take the black and gold glasses off and look at it from the outside looking in. The league found a marketable, friendly guy who never turns down an autograph. I suspect within the next three years or so another guy will be doing the same. Patrick Kane? John Tavares? There is so much young and new talent on its way up and they all are following the humble approach which in turn makes it all the better. What happens if you get a bit cocky? Well according to this survey you get voted in at number 69.

Thanks Jut. Leave it to Philly fan to show me it's OK to think Crosby is the savior of hockey.

jordan and gretzky were never giant douches, at least in public (gambling and cheating on their wives aside)

I guess my point regarding Philly is that our hatred is a necessary evil...especially given Philly's quality hockey market, that Sid, to be hockey jesus, needs us as, at the very least, a yin to his yang (or wang as it were ; - )

if he isn't the savior, he's one of them

Good point, jut. Sid the Kid came at the perfect time for a league trying to restore its image. He has more than lived up to his ridiculous hype and finally given the casual fan something to identify with in this sport. Now we just gotta get hockey, specifically playoff hockey somewhere more people will be to watch it because this versus business isn't cutting it. The Winter Classic is a great step albeit a small one.

My sentiments exactly. I guess since they put him in charge the NHLPA's player grievances he's found his true home. Complaining was always a big part of his game.
