Penguins Take Game 3 From Rangers, Sweep Possible

Malkin celebrates one of the many Penguins goals

So much for the Penguins not winning at Madison Square Garden this season.

Pittsburgh, who posted an 0-3-1 record at MSG during the regular season, couldn't have done a better job at shutting up the New York media than with their 5-3 win in Game Three on Tuesday.

Interesting stat to come from Game Three - Georges Laraque has become the second to last active Penguin on the playoff roster to tally a goal.  The only remaining straggler is Tyler Kennedy, who has tallied two assists over the seven games and proves his worth beyond a doubt on the forecheck.  Should Kennedy tally one in Game 4 Thursday night, every Penguin will have scored a goal over the last eight games.

Things got intense awfully fast when Ryan Whitney barely let a minute tick off the clock before scoring the first goal of the game.  Before long Pittsburgh, who was deadly on the power play (2 for 3), managed a healthy 3-1 lead heading into the second period.

But that's when things took a slight turn.  In a style reminiscent of Pittsburgh's four goal rally in Game One, New York tied the game with two quick goals in 1:04.  What looked like a sure win for Pittsburgh became an immediate fight for victory.

After Michel Therrien called a team timeout, the Pens came firing out of the gate again on all cylinders.  With just over two minutes remaining, Evgeni Malkin pulled the Pens ahead by one goal heading into the third.

The Rangers, who posted an atrocious 0-5 power play on the night, failed to convert with the man advantage and two consecutive 5-on-3 attempts.  You can blame it on their lack of offensive production or you can blame it on the Penguins' stellar penalty kill led by none other than Jordan Staal.

I'd say you'd be better off picking the latter.

Before long Ryan Malone sent home the security deposit on a tip-in from the shot of Kris Letang to seal the Pens' victory at 5-3.

Pittsburgh has won all seven of their 2008 playoff games, making them the first team since the 1994 Rangers to do so.  Irony knows no bounds.

When you look at Pittsburgh's chemistry compared to that of New York, you can't help but notice the fluidity of play amongst the younger team.  Solid passing, incredibly accurate shots and amazing penalty kills have been the story of success for Pittsburgh in this post-season.

Amazingly, Pittsburgh were out-shot 2-1 in Tuesday's game, hitting the mark five times on 17 shots.  Marc-Andre Fleury was equally busy between the pipes, successfully stopping 36 of 39.

You know New York has officially caved when they interview Fleury on their post-game show.  Hilarious.

Equally hilarious article right here.

Game 4 to complete the sweep is right around the corner; Thursday at 7 p.m.  Bring your brooms.

I can't believe the Pens are up 3-0 in this series. It could just as easily be 0-3. This has been some of the best hockey I have seen in a long time.

Perhaps some Suns/Spurs kind of situation for the Rangers? Remember they threw away game 1 up 3-0.

If the Penguins can continue to roll like this they literally look unbeatable in the East. Who they go up against in the West is really where the test will come.

Maybe the Rangers will rally around Avery and win a game. Thats pretty strange/scary.

Eh, they're gonna have to do so with a dinged up Drury too. He got knocked around pretty good the other night and played injured for the remainder of the game. I think Betts is also questionable after taking a puck to the face.

The Rangers looked like the walking wounded out there last night. I think only Colorado has had a worse time with injuries, not that it would matter in that series. Anytime Malkin gets that many good looks at the net (inlcuding the WIDE OPEN one he missed...along with Straka's offsetting miss), NY will have a hard time winning.

Malkin just needs to feel the pressure. He can't hit an open net without two guys trying to pry the puck loose. ;-)

A Pens and Flyers series would be terrifically entertaining.

A Pens/Flyers series would win it for the West. Neither team will walk away from it alive.

So you're saying only Montreal has a chance and they are essentially done.

Well, if you really believe what I said - which even I only half believe. The Penguins look really good this year in the post-season. They've won in MSG (something they didn't do in regular season), swept a series (something they didn't do in the regular season) and are really looking like the complete unit out there. I'm just saying, the risk of injury to the big names on Philly and Pitt is even higher than a normal series. It's easily been one of the biggest match-ups of the year. Now for them to meet in the playoffs will only multiply that, especially in the realm of home ice. But no, I don't really think Montreal has any shot. I'm rooting for Dallas in the West, and know even that is a long shot.

Hey Frank, you might not want to get so over confident with your sweep declaration. There is nothing I hate more than opposing fans getting the brooms out prematurely. I know everyone here thinks the Penguins have this series wrapped up already... It's about f'ing time the Rangers tested Marc-Andre Fleury in a blessed game in this series. While he made a number of quality saves, he still saw a considerably higher number of low percentage shots... and what about mentioning where the turning point in the game was? Ya know, when Ryan Hollweg took that stupid God damn penalty right after Jaromir Jagr tied the game? ...While the chances of the Rangers making an historic comeback in this series is extremely slim to none, I am not giving up hope completely for at least tonight. No f'ing way do I want the Penguins celebrating anything on my home turf. Then again, what's more painful? Them doing it here or watching Pittsburgh fans celebrate a series win in their building? Either way, this is going to f'ing suck ass... Okay, I cannot be a party pooper, so I better shut up before I bring everybody down. ;)

Paul, you're right - I probably should hold back in the confidence department. But seriously, how can I? The Pens have won 7 in a row and have advanced past the first round for the first time in a while. While mentioning a sweep is a bit cocky, I just can't help but get fired up for the next round. New York papers are also mentioning the 33 years thing as if it's breaking news. Ottawa unveiled the same crap when they were down 3-0 as well. 33 years...33 years...nah.

haha well in that case Steely - you may need to keep it for just the Pens. I'd say the Steelers too but, well, you don't sweep much in football.
