Why not?  We see enough player pics over the course of a season...

I don't remember Philly taking to the ice after the first period.  I can't prove it, but I think it's a formidable assumption.

The Penguins were the first ones to say the 3-5 regular season series record against the Flyers is absolutely meaningless, notching their first win of the series Friday night in a 4-2 victory before the whiteout seats at Mellon Arena.

This game started off on the path to what looked like a possible 15-14 final score.  Goals were tallying up on both ends of the ice, in what looked like a solid 2-2 tie heading into only the second period.  Yet with less than 10 seconds remaining, Malkin played the 'never give up' game and blew one past Biron to put the game in the hands of Pitt.  From there the Penguins maintained a steady hold onto the game right up until Malkin added what would ultimately be the insurance marker five minutes into the first.

Looking back on the game, it's hard to believe all of the scoring took place within exactly the first 25 minutes of regulation.  I say this only because it's hard to forget some of the hits and close-calls that occurred on what seemed to be a regular basis.

Versus put a lot of emphasis on Philly's R.J. Umberger tonight.  The Plumborough native has somewhat of a homecoming in this Game 1 performance, but also did somewhat of a lackluster effort on behalf of the Flyers.  In either case, the network still did a lovely and heart-warming feature on R.J. that should hopefully silence the constant chimes from the Philthadelphia crowds about the NHL loving Crosby.  In Pittsburgh's defense, or maybe in just a rational and analytical thought - at least when any network backs Crosby he comes through with at least a point.  Of course, the NHL makes sure he gets a point as part of the widespread conspiracy that is surely taking over the league.

Penalties were few and far between tonight - that is, until the third period when tempers really started to flair.  Philly played a very disciplined game, staying penalty-free in the first and only taking a single call in the second.  They'd later accumulate 16 minutes (10-minute misconduct included) within the last two minutes of the game.

Pittsburgh, on a similar note, kept a majority of their guys out of the box as well.  Unfortunately this did not apply to Ryan Whitney, who may not have received the "stay out of the box tonight because they have a solid power play unit" memo from Coach Therrien.  Regardless, the Penguins' penalty-kill unit kept the Flyers scoreless on three attempts with the man advantage.

Malkin may very well be in even better contention for the Conn Smythe more than ever with his 2 goal, three point performance in the first game of this series.  For the 2008 playoffs, Malkin has posted 8 goals and 9 assists for a 17 point display over the span of 10 games.  By the numbers, it would appear only Detroit's Johan Franzen is in strict contention for the same award.  Franzen has posted an unprecedented 27 goals in the last 27 games, 12 of which have come in the playoffs for a postseason total of 15 points.

The Penguins remain unbeaten on home-ice this postseason and will look to continue that streak with Game 2 on Sunday commencing at 7:30 p.m.

Philly fans claimed Pitt was afraid to play them?  Looks like they were wrong again.

Warning: Should Pitt win on Sunday, expect to hear "Flyers came back in a series against the Pens once" sort of talk start as soon as Monday.

A great win Frank no doubt about it. The only thing that bothered me about the Versus coverage is how come they didn't show those Flyers fans in that dive bar after Malkin scored?

Yeah - I guess they don't want to be biased in the face of defeat. I'm surprised they even did that to begin with, but I guess since the VS offices are located in Philly it wasn't so much an effort anyways.

i take a little bit of offense to comments like "Philthadelphia crowds"

its fine to be cynical Frank, but at least call a spade a spade...the Umberger homage was simple...they were in Pittsburgh, he's from Pittsburgh and he plays for Philly...

The last Malkin Goal really pissed me off...nothing wrong with it, but to hear Keith Jones chime in on how great a play it was made me laugh...

I have to concur...no idea where the Flyers went by the 3rd period...

and throughout the game i kept thinking: "god, they have to keep track of him...and him...and him"

There's just a lot of weapons...but Philly's a scrappy bunch, we'll see how game two goes...afterall, the flyers have yet to win a game one in the playoffs...

Hah - and Sid is in Pitt and won the scoring title last year. Granted he's not from Pittsburgh, but I'm sure 95% of Philly fans wouldn't have hesitated to roll their eyes and complain about a segment on him. My point wasn't necessarily to insult Philly fans, it was just how he had a nice breakaway, loused it up and got annihilated into the boards.

By the way - could they talk any more about Timmonen? I mean, I know he's out, Philly fans know he's out - but when a guy on the blueline steps up for a shot, don't turn around and say "that would've been so much better if Timmonen were there." I mean, I got insulted by that - so I can't imagine how Philly fans must've felt (or the guy taking the shot; Jones?)

I'm just hoping the Pens can go into Philly up 2-0. I don't want to see a split series at home.

A healthy Gagne would've really put this series into perspective. It's sad he had such a solid effort last year when, I guess you could say, it didn't matter. And now that the team is doing so well, the single guy who may have put a few fans in the seats last year is out of it. Out of all the Flyers I've always kind of liked Gagne.

Its not an excuse...

everyone has injuries...

Guys like Briere need to step up...And personally I think he's overpaid for his production. His impact on the team? Maybe not, but for being a hockey player, he's overpaid...

Oh I know it's not an excuse, I'm just saying it would definitely have been a boost. Briere has had a really rough first year in Philly. For the sake of the Flyers, both monetary and statistically, he better step it up next year if he wants to avoid a buy-out prior to a complete team restructure. I don't know if the Flyers intended to build around him or not, but he's really not the centerpiece kind of guy.

First off... congratulations to the Penguins and their fans on a game one victory...

Now for some things that must be said from the other side...

Both of Malkin's goals should have been saved. The first one was a shot that was clearly seen by Biron; there was nobody in front of him to obstruct his view at all. The second one, the break away slapper, should have been stopped; when a player winds up like that he is committed to taking the shot, so you know it is coming. All Biron had to do was step out at Malkin. Alas, props for Eve for getting them both into the net because it is the difference in the game...

That hit on Malkin made my night. The only reason he got that breakaway was because it took him so long to recuperate from getting facking nailed. The way the scoring was going at the time, I believed giving up the goal was totally worth the hit, but in the end Eve got the last laugh... still loved the hit though...

The officiating was pretty good actually but there was a late hit on Umberger that should have been called... both teams got away with some things though... The officiating in the NHL needs to be more consistent from game to game though, if the league is ever going to become more popular...

You are totally right in saying that Flyers didn't show up for the last two periods. The Flyers did out-play the Penguins for the first nineteen minutes, but Pitt took advantage of their breaks and the game was tied after nineteen minutes...

Crosby didn't earn his goal. It was a result of Biron's stupid play behind the net. More than that, it was the result of his teammates making a remarkable play in the corner and feeding Sidney at the right time in front of the net...

RJ's piece was nice. Even though he didn't score, he did have a few opportunities but ran into a sharp Fleury between the pipes on the other end...

The Flyers were just taking out their frustration in the last two minutes, that is why the unsportsmanlike conduct... remember though, it takes two to tango, the Penguins were not exempt from the shoving match...

You are wrong in saying that the Flyers have a solid power play unit. Numbers here lie because their power play unit isn't really that strong (especially when Briere is away from the side of the net)...

As a Philly fan I never thought that the Penguins were scared of the Flyers. In my eyes, it actually goes the other way...

The Penguins have one game one of every series this postseason and the Flyers have lost game one every time as well. Even with a one to zero lead, this series is far from over...

Congrats again to the Penguins. Be forewarned though because as the Flyers showed in the first period, they can play with these guys...

If by that late hit on Umberger you mean the shot Orpik gave him after he flubbed the breakaway then I'm going to have to disagree. He was trying to play the puck, and as long as he made an attempt to do so a player can take him out of the play. Otherwise it's interference.

Malkin got nailed, no doubt. Umberger got popped and so did Hartnell. Lot's of solid hitting, but that was expected.

And actually, I don't think I'm wrong in saying the Flyrs have a good power play unit. They were ranked higher than Pitt at one point on the season and the competence is there. Making it click again is what I'm worried about.
