Martin Gerber realizes he can't do it all by himself

In what was quite possibly the closest game of the series, Pittsburgh powered their way to a 3-1 retaliation victory to eliminate the Ottawa Senators from Stanley Cup contention.

Similar to Game Three, the first period ended in a scoreless tie. Ottawa certainly didn't look like a team ready to pack it in for the season. The hits were hard, the chances were close and the tempo was beyond the fastest speed metal song you can find.

However that all quickly shifted in the second period when Evgeni Malkin lit the lamp on the power play for the first goal of the game. The 1-0 lead may have been enough for a win, but when you consider Ottawa's three goal rally in game two one can never be enough.

Halfway through the second Ottawa returned the favor on a Cory Stillman goal. Tied up at one, it was an entirely new game.

Prior to the game, penalty box season ticket holder and eternal bane of the opposition's existence Jarkko Ruutu would hardly be seen as the hero. His gritty play and scrapping style has no doubt made him a fan favorite, but to say he'd be the turning point in game four would've been a stretch.

Well - he was. With less than five minutes remaining in the second, Ruutu charged down the ice on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Trying to catch up to the puck, Ruutu hit the brakes in front of Gerber and quickly switched to the backhand, beating Gerber five-hole for the go-ahead and soon to be game-winning goal.

But not so fast.

Ottawa returned the favor soon enough on what appeared to be an Antoine Vermette goal. The Ottawa crowd erupted with the passion and hope of a Game Four victory but was quickly and uncomfortably silent when the play went to the War Room. Upon further review (and despite the CBC announcers insisted it was 'not his intent') the goal was called off in accordance with what was an obvious kick-in.

From thereon-in the Senators played with a hole in their hearts and the dejection showed. Once the clock reached the five minute mark in the third, Penguins fans everywhere began to count down. Ottawa pulled Gerber with just over a minute left and applied heavy pressure. But it all came down to the stick of Captain Crosby to seal the deal with a 100 foot empty netter. Final score 3-1, Penguins victorious in four.

Even more beautiful than the victory (only slight I might add) was the post-game handshake at center ice. If Pittsburgh knew what was good for them, they'd be sure to post that up in the opponent's locker room next year when the season opens up in Sweden.

And now - we wait. Who's next?

Well played Pitt. You blow a regular season game against the Flyers just so you can play the wounded Senators.

Spoken like a true Philly fan. Don't worry. They took care of Ottawa in retribution for last year and they'll take care of Philly should the Flyers walk out of Round One.

Fantastic goal by Ruutu. Hopefully the time off will allow some of the fellows to get healthy.

That goal should've counted in my opinion. Did it hit off his skate? Definately. Did his foot direct it in? Sure. Was it a distinct kicking motion? Not from what I could see. There is a fine line between stoping and kicking, and that looked like a stop to me.

It was a kick, no doubt in my mind. And I'm not even saying that because I'm a Penguins fan, but I'm saying it because it was pretty obvious. Even the CBC announcer says "It looks like he was trying to kick it to his stick." KICK it to his stick. It was a kick. Had it been a stop you'd have seen some more snow coming up from the right blade.

You could probably make an argument either way on that one. I just think that in a game-tying situation, especially when it was originally called a goal, that there wasn't enough evidence of a kicking motion.

If you intentionally kick the puck towards the net, then no goal. If you are trying to redirect the puck to your stick and it happens to go in, then the goal counts. It's a judgement call most of the time I know, but the rule is clear with the word "intent."

To much gray area, the NHL needs to either allow all kick-ins or disallow them. There was a similar situation last year and it went the way of the Sens. The best bet is to eliminate the "intent" part of the rule.

True, and I agree with Anon. Who's to really say whether the kick was intended or not? I mean if you let that go for kicking, then you could almost include that in all penalties too. Was it his intent to high-stick the guy? Well no, he was falling down and clipped the guy in the face. But it's still a penalty. Did he mean to trip the guy? Well no, he was trying to go for the puck and the stick just got caught in the skates. Was he trying to punch the guy? Well - yes. Yes he was.

The rule was introduced to protect goalies from being struck with skate blades. If you allow a player to kick it in (even if he meant to kick it to his stick) the you put the safety of goalies at a great risk.

Well, in their defense, the team as a whole was pretty banged up. In any case, revenge is sweet. The two teams will open up next season in Sweden, pending official word and approval from the NHLPA. Apparently even that was a gray area. The NHL announced it before the players' union agreed. Even more evidence that the league/union endeavors will forever be in shambles.

How do you start 15-2 and 29-10-4 as the Sens did and then a) just manage to scrape into the playoffs and b) get swept in the first round? As amazing a collapse as one will find in the history of hockey, I'm guessing.

I guess for the best answer, you'd have better luck asking Detroit. They've been notorious for first round flops.
