Talbot's third period goal insured a Pittsburgh victory

Read more at Pensburgh.com

A few goals, a fight, a video review gone wrong and in the end a victory - just another playoff game in the end right?

Wrong.

The Penguins extended their postseason home record to a flattering 7-0, breaking a franchise record set by the '91 cup-winning squad, with a 4-2 victory over the Flyers Sunday night at Mellon Arena.

Unlike the first period in Game 1 on Friday, the scoring was minimal to begin with.  Kennedy and Upshall didn't waste any time throwing down mitts in the first, sending both off to the box for fighting.  Residential Pensburgh fight expert Dunman takes a closer look here.  Roughly seven minutes later on the second power play of the night, Sidney Crosby capitalized with the man advantage just seconds after a 5-on-3 turned into a 5-on-4 for Pitt.  That would be it for red lights in the first.

Heading into the second up 1-0, the Pens were hoping to widen the gap with another notch.  Unfortunately for Pitt, the Flyers responded quickly with a goal of their own from the blade of Jeff Carter.

Tied at one, Sidney Crosby tried to jam one in past Biron in what appeared to be a goal.  Crosby raised his hands in celebration, but halfway through doing so immediately argued to the ref that the puck was in when the light failed to go on.  Review went to the War Room in Toronto for further review.  Fans got a solid look at the (potential) goal from different angles, one of which seemed very evident that the puck did in fact cross the crease.  Biased Penguins eyes would say it was a goal, Flyers eyes would say it was not and strict hockey fans without allegiance to either team would say it was too close to call.  In efforts to avoid a controversial game-changing call, the refs officially called it a no-goal and play resumed.

79be38b03586698e6869c7f2706627f6-getty-80994538rb024_philadelphia_.jpg

Moments later, on the power play, Marian Hossa grabs the puck on a rebound in front of Biron to put the Pens ahead 2-1.  That wouldn't last long.

With less than 30 seconds remaining in the second, Pittsburgh entered Philly's zone with the man advantage to try and put the game out of reach heading into the third.  Malkin tried to dish a pass back to the point for Gonchar, where it was scooped up by Philly's Mike Richards for a breakaway run.  Shorthanded on the drive with Fleury twitching uncomfortably in net, Richards released a fast wrister that blew by Fleury glove-side to tie the game at two moving into the third.

But the Penguins would not give up.  In his first game back since suffering a broken foot in the New York series, Max Talbot changed the course of the game for good.  Following Steve Downie's flub along the boards in attempts to clear the zone, Gary Roberts kept the puck in and followed it to the back of the net.  In a no-look centering pass, Talbot threaded the puck into the back of the net, moving the Penguins up to a 3-2 lead.

That would wind up being all the flightless birds would need in this match, further insured by the empty net marker from Jordan Staal to close out the game and send the series back to Philly.

Two consecutive 4-2 victories would say the Penguins have taken a commanding series lead.  What it won't say is that these wins were hard-fought and well-earned by the time the final horn sounded the end.  Considering the regular season series between these two cross-state rivals, home-ice advantage was expected to play a huge factor over the course of the post-season.  As the Battle of Keystone heads back to Philly, the Penguins will look to complete a sweep, while Philly plans to even up the series and send it back to Pitt.  As many fans from both sides have expressed, this series is far from over.

Wow, what a terrific time! Worth every penny of the $110 a piece tickets that I got. As far as the no goal call on Crosby's play the Gunnette kept getting texts that it was a goal. They did not show it on the monitors in the Arena so I wasn't sure. Once I got home and watched the replay on NHL Network I have to say that the NHL got it right, I would not have given the goal.

it was one of those instances much like NFL replay...if you started from the middle, it was probably a goal... but because it was called a no goal from the start you have to "overturn" it...

I'm confident it wasn't a goal, as much as I wanted it to be. You can't let a questionable neutral call on-ice be overturned in the war room. That would've changed the course of the entire game, if not the series.

To be honest - and I could eat these words - I think it's all but over. That was the Flyers best that they threw at the Pens. It wasn't even enough to be a lackluster Pens performance. I thought this series would be much closer.

what was weird was the hit itself...

I mean, the angle showed you getting hit in the face with a puck...where, i have no idea...

Then they explained that he was being stitched up in the lockerroom, so I assumed he'd be back...but not...which means it must have either hit him in a bad spot (eye?) or in the head to the point of head trama...

I read it took over 40 stitches to close up. That is one hell of a cut.

From the Edmonton Sun: "He has got a really bad gash in his forehead across his eye," said coach John Stevens, trying to explain what happened to Coburn. "Pretty swollen and we'll have to reevaulate him when we got home."

Ugh, what's worse than those stitches is the stuff that is building up under the cut. Blood, puss - yuck. I got hit by a pitch in the face when I was little. I didn't break anything and I didn't need stitches, but when the giant gash finally healed it was turning every color of the rainbow. It was even oozing (pukes) green.

But really, it was the pens swarming defense...it was a 3-1 game, really...i'm excluding the empty netter (obviously) and Richards' goal...

The Flyers could not get the offense going, but things will really be told in games 3 and 4...(duh)

If Pittsburgh wins game 3, it is over...

Philly looked very overmatched at times and really they just don't have the skaters to keep up.

I will say the Hatcher hooking call was total bullshit...and kept saying to my buddy: "They've already got enough firepower and now they give 'em a freebie...this is ridiculous"

If nothing else, the moxy of the Scotts (Hartnall and Upshaw) will certainly be well received in Philly

The fight between Kennedy and Upshaw was really a laugher...Pens fans will call it a Kennedy Victory and Flyers fans a draw...I give the edge to Kennedy, however the commentators loves it...i felt the fight was just a lot of flailing arms and little sustainance...though Upshaw landed one hell of an upcut after taking a bit of a beating

I don't know about the Hatcher call. I was watching the game with a Flyers fan, and he didn't really argue it much. But what he did get mad at was the Briere goalie interference call, which I will admit was a little shaky.

The fight was just a fight. Not a total beatdown and not a total wash. Versus announcers tend to take fight commentary to the UFC level whenever anyone drops the gloves.

Winning Game 3 is beyond huge for the Flyers. This is what will keep them alive and have the fans rally behind for a potential home sweep.

That is how you comment JuT!!!

My turn...

Once again, congratulations to the Penguins and their fans for going up two to nothing in the series...

Scottie "doesn't know" Upshall got his stuff beat down... geeze, he got hammered...

That Jeff Carter goal was set up well and was a nice shot by JC to squeeze in by Fleury...

Maybe I just missed it but did you mention Braydon Coburn's injury anywhere?

The lost of Coburn with Timonen already out destroyed the Flyers defense...

Evgeni Malkin sucked this game. Rare for a player of his caliber. I'm guessing that it has something to do with that hit he took in Game One combined with the fact that the Flyers were all over him all game long...

The play that went under review was a goal. Crosby got ripped of a stat. When they said "No Goal" I was shocked. Slowly I peered over my shoulder because I thought the world was coming to and end...

I believe these officials were hired by an outside source because the game was called evenly, not fair but evenly...

Richards is most certainly amongst the best players in the entire league...

The series isn't over, but it isn't looking good for the Flyers. Penguins fans should feel really good right now considering Pittsburgh has a two game lead and the team is playing at such a high level...

Can you believe that Richards makes about $5.5 million less than Briere and $3 million less than Hartnell? WTF, this kid is the future of the team.

Steel Town, I couldn't agree more...

But you also have to think about the situation:

Richards is just this season proving to be the future of the franchise...

Briere took less money to come to Philly. The amount of money he could be getting paid could be much higher. That fact he is making so much is due to the potential he has shown in years past combined with how aggressive the market was this past off-season...

The only thing I could say about Hartnell at this point is that if I were ever in a bar fight and could have one dude backing me from the Flyers, it would have to be Hartnell. He is the tough-nosed kind of guy that would have no problems grabbing a chair and using it as a weapon. Doing this all while not spilling a drop of beer...

Then again, I'm not saying anything you don't already know...

As much as I would love for an eastern conference team to beat down the Red Wings...I think the cup is headed to Motown. Neither the Penguins or the Flyers have the defense to compete with the Red Wings, plus the wings have an offense consisting of 92-point Zetterberg, 97-point Datsyuk and Franzen who has 12 goals in the playoffs.

The Red Wings are really an intense team. Lucky for the Stars, Franzen is iffy for the next game or so with concussion-like symptoms. This is the opportunity for them to try and turn it around, if they even can.

I do understand your position J-Dawg. But, I think you underestimate the Pens D. Their defense is really what has propelled them to the level they are playing at now. Also, naming another teams offensive prowess is really not that impressive to me after watching Crosby, Malkin, and Sykora all year. Detroit is clearly the favorite, but don't count the Pens out. Gary Roberts for President.

I understand that the Pens have a good defense, which is better than that of most other teams. But when you look at the Pens D, it is one mainly built for offense. Names like Gonchar, Whitney and Letang spring to mind. The Wings on the other hand have Listrom, who looks likely to win his 6th norris in 7 years. Along with Datsyuk and Zetterberg, both Selke finalists, the Wings led the league in shots allowed as well as goals against average. Don't get me wrong, I think the series will go to 6 or 7, but in the end, the ball (or puck) has to roll Detroit's way.

Eh, any Pens fan knows that Whitney isn't nearly as big a contributor on offense as people think.

People said the Pitt/Ott series would be beneficial to Pitt with all of Ottawa's injuries. They were right. Then people said the Rangers/Penguins series would be six or seven games. It went 5 games; they were close. Then people said Philly is Pitt's biggest challenge and it would go at least 6 games but most likely seven. It's not looking too good.

I really think the only challenge for the Pens this post-season will be Detroit. But I also think the two will come the closest to a 6 or 7 game series than any other Pitt series before it.
