Penguins Pound Flyers 7-1

Nittymaki's relief effort was all for none, as the Pens unleashed a seven goal scoring assault.

Powered by two four point efforts by Evgeni Malkin and Petr Sykora, the Pittsburgh Penguins stomped the Flyers for their third straight win and fifth of the last seven games.  Each tallied two goals and two helpers, contributing to the game's seven goal offensive assault on the struggling Philly club.

Back from a slightly wounded knee, Marian Hossa hit the scoreboard for the first time since the knee-on-knee with a goal late in the second to widen the lead to four.  Hossa's trade deadline counterpart Pascal Dupuis also notched three assists on the day.

In efforts to help Petr Sykora attain his first ever career hat trick, Malkin looked to almost make more an effort to assist rather than secure one himself.  It was all for none as neither would draw the hats to the ice by the game's end.

The referees no doubt played an integral part in the game's on-ice scrums.  Both Mike Richards and Chris Minard were ejected from the game late in the third following an altercation in efforts to maintain the peace since the 100-plus penalty minute game earlier in the season.

Back on December 11, Michel Therrien was beside himself when the Flyers' coaching staff was sending out the top power play units in an already lopsided 8-2 affair.  If there's one thing Therrien is not, it's silent on such matters.    Perhaps one even remembers [former Flyer] Ben Eager's comment to Therrien - "You're a joke."

Therrien [unsuccessfully] tried to hide the smile of sweet redemption from his face, admirably putting together a power play line consisting of Kennedy, Ruutu and Talbot.

The Penguins coach proved he was the better man, perhaps even the coach of this year's better team, as the Flyers' playoff hopes are teetering on the brink of non-existence.

After today's game the Penguins remain one point behind New Jersey for the lead in the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division standings, tied only with Montreal.  The Flyers rest uncomfortably in the eighth place position as the Sabres, Capitals and Panthers are all trying to make a late run for the playoffs.

The next game for the Pens is Tuesday against the Rangers.  Game time: 7pm.

Mother... Piece of... WHAT THE FACK? The Flyers were going to the playoffs, they were going to be a top seed, they were title contenders! Now what... they are playing without much heart or effort. If not that, they are definitely missing something...

The Flyers were hit with a bunch of injuries for a while too. Lupul and Richards are going to have to step it up to high gear in the final stretch here to really make a worthy run.

More importantly it brought the Flyer's a little closer to getting caught by the Caps

Huet and Kolzig are really sealing the deal for the Caps in this closing run. And to think, Washington got Huet from Montreal for a 2nd Rnd Pick.

Was the goalie defending the goal like that the entire game?

It would almost seem that way. The first one was pulled after giving up three goals - the next guy gave up four.

The NBC broadcasters resemble something more as guest hosts for "The View" rather than hockey followers. Especially that Milbury guy, what an idiot...

I despise the NBC broadcasts. There's no pregame, no postgame and they treat it with a "let's get this over with" approach. If you ever needed more evidence to the fact, they treat hockey like it's breaking into the golf broadcast. They were constantly updating what Tiger was doing.

Ah I have still enduring memories of the time that Milbury whilst playing for the Bruins went nuts and started pounding the crap out of some fan in the seats. In other words, yeah, Milbury is a nutcase and an idiot.

"a nutcase and an idiot". Well, that definitely explains how Milbury ended up on national network television.

With his own shoe no less. Or am I thinking of someone else? Keith Jones?

It's a shame, 'cause NBC commands all of the good games on sundays. I read that they can cover at least one more Pens game this regular season, so they are going to cover the Rangers Pens game on the 30th. You know it's bad when Fox Sports Network has better coverage.

I heard the same. The flex scheduling allows for NBC to host up to four games of a single team. I believe one more appearance would make it four for the Pens.

MIllbury didnt pound that guy, he beat him with his own shoe. Pierre Mcguire is worse then Millbury and perhaps the most annoying hockey guy EVER. Yes more annoying then Don Cherry.

I can't stand Don Cherry. I don't see what Canadians see in that guy. He's a bigot - the color commentator who somehow manages to overshadow MacLean's admirable demeanor. Not to mention, MacLean is a million times more knowledgeable than Cherry. He just doesn't yell and shout about it.

They must like him because he is not Milbury.

I agree with you Frank Don Cherry is a borish ape but he only has a a short segment during Leafs games so nobody with half a brain watches him anyways. Mclean has a good segment of his own during the second game (the non Leafs therefore GOOD game)

in any case, I'll still never fully understand what Canadians see in the guy - so much to a point where they feel he's a national icon.
