Penguins Own Three Game Series Lead Over Senators

Prophetic?

Five minutes into game three and looked like it was on its way to a new series. The 2-0 deficit that the Penguins held over the Senators looked as if it would fall victim to the Eastern Conference curse held on the previous night, when all two game leads were cut down to one.

But that was just in the first period.

Heading into the second period in a scoreless tie, the close chances of the first already signified that the intensity level was far beyond 11. Hard hits, miraculous saves and finely tuned passes were nothing far from expectations; playoff hockey at its finest.

The Senators struck first in what had possessed the hints of a low scoring affair when the Penguins failed to clear the zone on a bouncing puck.

Hungry as ever, Max Talbot notched the first of four Penguins goals on a backhand shot past Gerber.

Off to the locker room tied at one, both teams were still aware of the fact it was still anyone's game. On the opening faceoff of the third, Captain Crosby paved the way 12 seconds in with the go-ahead goal. One minute and eighteen seconds later, seasonal sleeper Jordan Staal awoke from hibernation to add some insurance to the one goal lead. Any hopes of an Ottawa retaliation were quickly doused when Marion Hossa popped the mesh eight minutes into the third. The goal ended his playoff dry spell which many naysayers have held against him since his days in Ottawa.

Monday's win puts the Penguins in a commanding 3-0 series lead. Despite Ottawa's attempts to diminish motivation amongst the Penguins' locker room with pictures of last year's defeat hanging loud and proud in the warm-up area, the Penguins sought motivation and can officially seal the deal Wednesday night in Ottawa.

The series ends Wednesday. Puck drops at 7pm. Read more at Pensburgh.com

The Sens threw everything they had into that game and it wasn't enough. The Pens are just too powerful this year. Regardless of a slump, the Sens are a potent team, but, it's not enough to stop the Pens. I hope Roberts comes back for game 4. They need someone to protect the stars once it is clear that Ottawa will lose. Also, did you notice both teams played with a lot of class in the wanning minutes of last nights game, not taking cheap shots or trying to run up the score or anything like that. It's good to see that cooled heads prevailed in a game that looked like it could have gotten violent.

I definitely saw the Sens starting to ween away at the end of the game. Like there was no point in trying anymore. Also, I don't know if you had a chance but did you catch the opening to the game? They had a guy come out dressed like a dropout from the movie 300 trying to rally the crowd together. It was quite possibly one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen.

I was fixing my beermiester at the time, and I wasn't quite sure what was going on with that guy. I just figured it was their mascot.

It was atrocious. Even Senators fans were talking about it as one of the most embarrassing things ever.

The Sens were supposed to be one of the best etams in the league this season but lack of goaltending and a rash of injuries doomed them. I would like to see a healthy Sens team play a healthy Pens team. I think it would be very entertaining and close hockey.

I agree. When the Penguins walk away from this series tomorrow night, that is exactly what all of the shoulda woulda coulda journalists will be writing about. "Yeah but we were hurt." No doubt a true statement, but the Penguins were struggling with injuries all season long. For them to have come this far in the face of media adversity is amazing in itself, never mind the fact they finished only two points out of the conference lead. Granted, if Crosby were injured now, along with Fleury and we'll say Hossa (just to evenly compare the loss to Ottawa) then this would be an entirely different series. The old end of the season mantra : there's always next year.
