Penguins Force Game Six, Win in Third OT

"I'm going to score it" he told NBC's Pierre McGuire, referring to the sudden death game-winner.

109 minutes and 17 seconds after the opening faceoff - nearly 5 1/2 periods of hockey, Petr Sykora became the NHL's Babe Ruth.

What do you even say after a win like this?

You just have to rationalize. The win didn't take the Cup home, but it brings the series back home at least. Of course, will Pitt ride out the five period victory for another game, or will Game 4's home-ice loss sit uncomfortably in the back of Pittsburgh's collective minds?

They'll worry about that on Thursday.

Pitt took a quick 2-0 lead in this game early in the first. Considering the caliber of Fleury's play, it didn't look like Detroit would have an easy time coming back from a two-goal hole. It was Detroit's to steal, and Pittsburgh's to win.

Lo and behold, the Penguins soon found themselves in a 3-2 deficit in the third with the final minutes of the season ticking down. Or so viewers thought.

Less than a minute remained in the game when Marc-Andre Fleury skated to the bench in exchange for the extra attacker. Fans everywhere, regardless of allegiance, were sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation. Detroit fans counted down the clock, while Pitt fans begged for a goal.

35 seconds remained when Max Talbot was tackled by his fellow Penguins in celebration of the tying goal, a two-shot effort past a sprawling Chris Osgood, that sent the 3-3 game to overtime.

Throughout the first overtime, the ice was chippy, the puck was bouncy and the players were tired. Those conditions would only worsen as the night progressed.

Nothing could be more evidence of a player's conditioning than a triple overtime fiasco. Not to mention the undying passion to be on the ice with teammates in efforts to send the series to a Game 6. Just ask Petr Sykora, Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Malone.

First to take the bullet was Sergei Gonchar. In effort to breakup a Red Wing breakaway, Gonchar slid head first into the boards behind Fleury and was beyond shaken up. The obvious shoulder/neck pain would be enough to take Gonchar out of action.

Next on the plate was Ryan Malone, the victim of Hal Gill's rising slapshot. If you happened to catch the action, all you saw was a stick, a rising puck and gloves thrown into the air before the blood spewed endlessly onto the ice. Malone, who suffered a broken nose back in Game 2 of the series, was clearly not in good shape.

As then there was Petr Sykora, who found himself ailing in what was described as the obligatory "upper-body injury." Injury or not, he still maintained a solid level of confidence that proudly proclaimed he'd score the game-winner.

And score he did. Right in the slot over a disheveled Chris Osgood; 4-3 Penguins final and a sigh of relief from the black and gold faithful.

Hockey games often have a "story of the night." a game-winning goal or save, a hard hit or a player simply playing out of his head if often the target of this phrase. Yet tonight's game is as much a collection of stories as your local library's book shelf. From playing through injuries, to the seconds before Detroit's victory, there is no one moment that stands out as the ideal display of this game.

Marc-Andre Fleury comes awfully close though. Out of the 58 shots faced MAF stopped an astounding 55. Compare that to Osgood's 28 stops and Fleury nearly had double the workload. Sykora may have scored the game-winner, but Fleury made it all possible.

It's games like this that hockey fans remember. Years from now Detroit and Pittsburgh fans will have this game to look back on. If the Penguins win the Cup, this will be the game you'll never hear the end of or stop seeing highlights of. Penguins fans will never stop talking about it, while Red Wings fans will roll their eyes in eternal regret for that one night.

Pittsburgh has it's share of sports-lore. Frank Pietrangelo's "The Save" and The Steelers' "Immaculate Reception", just to name a few. Now Petr Sykora's "The Shot" can find it's place in hometown tales.

The traveling circus heads back to Pittsburgh Thursday night for Game 6. Lord Stanley will be along for the trip, but if all falls in favor of the Penguins, he won't see the light of day until Game 7 back in Detroit within the firm grip of Captain Crosby.

Wow! What a game! It was either an overtime win for the Penguins, forcing a game 6, or elimination. If the Penguins win this Cup, this game will always be remembered as one of the best moments in Pittsburgh history.

I can't believe that a guy who basically hasn't shown up in this series not only calls his shot but follows through on it. What a game, what amazing courage by Gonchar, and what an amazing job by MAF. There is nothing better than watching two teams go 110 minutes, leaving everything out there, in search of hockey's greatest prize. I can't wait for Wednesday.

you have to think if the penguins were going to win this game this is the best possible way...

A long OT win in the playoffs tend to sap the loser...in this case, in a volatile game 5 the pens have set themselves up for a respectable comeback chance...

too bad it's against detroit

Fleury saved you guys badly.

However, Detroit had no more right to win that game as soon as the 3rd OT began. Basically Pittsburgh wasn't able to string two passes together while Detroit was attacking and almost had double the shots on goal the Penguins did.

Pittsburgh fought back just when they were about to choke away a 2-0 lead and got the empty netter, which is a crime in itself because Detroit couldn't just clear the puck away. Datsyuk (I think) was trying to go for goal and with the time left all he needed to do was clear it, didn't matter where it went.

I think this is going to a game 7, Detroit will be rattled by the fact that they had this game won in the final minute of regulation, and blew it. They had the better chances in the OTs, and blew it. Then the high-sticking major killed it.

Great game to watch, great goal by Sykora, game 6 on Wednesday should be another good one.

You don't win a cup without your goalie bailing the team out at least once.

That pad save where he stretched out with the 2 on 1 is the save of the Cup for me.

I think Pittsburgh is starting to rattle Osgood now, especially since they didn't score at all in the first 2 games.

SS - I said the same thing about that save. That right there is the save of the year.

Chris Osgood is not rattled. I think he's too experienced not to let a game like this get to him. He usually bounces right back after a loss (evident in Game 4).

Fleury had another career night to save the Penguins, plain and simple. The pressure is still square on his shoulders. At the same time, neither Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin (who has been pitiful in this series, obviously) produce as they did in Game 3, the Red Wings will hoist the Cup tomorrow night.

LOL, sorry about that. It is true though that if Crosby and especially Malkin don't come through tomorrow night, I was stating the obvious.

I just don't believe Chris Osgood is rattled, that's the only real response I had to what somebody else concluded. It's easy to think that way after he allowed the tying goal in the final minute of regulation and then lose the game in triple overtime.

Osgood has been around the block to many times to be rattled after one loss. But here's to hoping he is.

Am I the only one that is absolutely astounded that Malkin's pass found someone in a Pens uniform. I think that was his first accurate pass of the series.

That dude has been awful.

He has fanned on the puck with no one around him at least 10 times in this series.

Shouldn't be getting his ice time.

He nearly cost the Pens the season on three or four separate occasions. My mind registered he got his first assist of the series, but it completely slipped my mind when I wrote the recap. I guess it's just a habit to leave him out by now.

This Pittsburgh win came down to two things... Marc-Andre Fleury keeping his season alive and obviously Jiri Hudler's high sticking penalty. As soon as he committed that, I knew the Penguins were going to win the game despite being the more beat-up team physically. In a third overtime and you are expected to kill off a penalty for four minutes? Let's just say it would've been a Herculean effort if they were successful.

If I were a Red Wings fan, I'd be so seething right now, especially if the Stanley Cup were within my team's grasp in a such a painful teasing manner.

Tomorrow night's Game 6 should be VERY interesting. I do wonder if my prediction does hold up though.

I think that is a very simple minded way to look at this game. The Pens battled hard an won the game. Osgood robbed the Pen's stars several times himself. If you take away those 4 goals, it doesn't matter how many saves MAF had. The Pens won because, as a team they weathered the storm and kept working for the next goal. If they can hold on to that attitude, your prediction will prove to be wrong, but if they go back to their "slow methodical" ways they will find themselves on the loosing end of this thing.

I don't know about that - the only reason it went to two overtimes, let alone to that Hudler penalty, was because Fleury stood on his head for all of sudden death. Pittsburgh was looking more and more tired as the game went on and Detroit only beat themselves, thanks to that penalty. They know their lapses cost them this game while the Penguins exhausted themselves. I see the Wings regrouping and winning game six by a wide margin.

And the reason it went into any overtimes was due to a goal that was scored while MAF was off the ice. To win a game, a team needs good goal tending, stout defense and timely goals. Fleury no matter how spectacular only accounts for one of those. I am not taking away from fluery's impact. He was huge and carried the team, but he is not the sole reason for anything. The players themselves will be the first to say that.
