To all those people who said the Penguins were stupid to trade away Armstrong, Christensen, Esposito and a first round pick for Hossa/Dupuis, this is the moment all Pens fans were waiting for.

It's funny how the Rangers had to wait until the third period to play. It's also kind of funny how the Rangers waited till Game 4 to show they could win.

But nothing's funnier than silencing the New York hockey media for another season. Tah tah ladies. It was fun.

Fleury looked like a wall at the beginning of the game. Nothing was getting past him mostly because nothing was getting to him. The Pens' D has really stepped it up a notch since the playoffs. This was unfortunately an area that Pittsburgh lacked in for a majority of the season, but really started to turn things around with the acquisition of Hal Gill at the trade deadline.

After Malkin and Hossa each picked up a goal, it almost looked as if you could pick up your phone and text a Rangers fan "Happy offseason." Yet for some reason in the back of your minds, perhaps it was because of Pittsburgh's return in Game 1 or New York's challenge in Game 2; something told you this was far from over.

That was an unfortunate fact.

New York came out in the third playing for their playoff lives. Some guy no one has ever heard of, including half the bench and 90% of Rangers fans, score the first Rangers goal of the game. The crowd goes silent, eying up the clock to see over 18 minutes still remaining. The clock would not be on Pittsburgh's side, as less than 3 more ticked down before New York tied it on a love-tap goal from Nygiel Dawes.

This is where it all came down to the D. Fleury and Lundqvist were challenged on both ends of the rink and each answered the call. At one point it looked as if Henrik would cave. Minutes later Fleury found himself in a similar nail-biting scenario and saved the day.

Before you knew it, overtime was on it's way and you didn't have a single finger nail left to bite.

In OT the Penguins started off with a power-play thanks in part to Chris Drury and his flailing stick. The Pens were unable to convert with the man advantage and the PP dissipates. Even still, Pittsburgh was controlling the puck and it looked like the first period all over again.

Fleury was hardly challenge in OT but when he was stepping up was not a problem. In fact, MAF made a save in OT that can hopefully be used as a reference point for the extra shine on the cup.

Right around this time in a playoff game, the players are still wired and ready to go. One more OT, and it comes down to either a fluke shot, roughed up ice or sheer exhaustion willing the puck in. That was not the case for Pitt tonight, and Crosby and Hossa connected for the game winner. Pittsburgh won the series 4-1, moving on to Philly for the Conference title.

This is where it gets ugly.

Don't expect a happy go lucky series for the Conference. These guys are out for blood. Anyone who suspected Pitt dodged the Flyers in the first round is now realizing that Pitt wanted this more than ever. Let Philly get as far as they can and take it from them.

So far this year Pittsburgh has destroyed any statistic surrounding the playoffs. They came back from being down 3-0 in Game 1, kept the Senators and Rangers from coming back and winning four straight and have led the NHL postseason in a number of team categories. Yet the one thing that Penguins fans and players alike have trouble shaking is this: Pittsburgh has never won a playoff series against Philly.

A disgusting 0-2 record stands between these teams heading into the next round.

Between now and the start of this series, we'll take a look at the history of these two teams and talk about the current obstacles standing between both.

Until then Pittsburgh will rest up for a series that runs the chance of being bigger than the Cup.

call me crazy, but i think if the rangers found a way to get an OT goal tonight after coming back from down 2-0 in the game it would have killed pitt's confidence and the rangers win the series. What'd ya think of the shot to the face Drury took from Maloney earlier in the game? not a penalty?

all that being said, Pitt got the goal and deserve to move on. Congrats

Oh that was totally a penalty. It's not like I would WANT Pitt to get the box for it, but that one definitely could've turned the tides of the game. Another example of how bounces just don't go a team's way sometimes. I'd like to think it was justified earlier when Drury held Malone, but a 4-minute DM is more detrimental than a potential 2-minute PP. Who knows though? Perhaps that's just another coulda-woulda-shoulda scenario.

fun series to watch. Maybe next time the Rangers will not blow a 3 goal lead in game one and King Henrik will not play like the Queen in game 3. congratulations to the Penguins though, they were the better team. on a side, the Stars-Sharks 3rd period/overtime was the most exciting hockey I have watched in a long time. Too bad the game was on so late in the east coast.

I had no idea that game went to so many overtimes or I would've caught the tail end of it (i work odd hours). Unbelievable. So-called "experts" were picking San Jose vs New York in the finals. Guess they're in need of a reassessment.

Ha ha, Dallas is whooping up on the "Experts" picks, Anahiem and San Jose: Gone. Although I think it is unlikely, I won't be suprised if Dallas upsets Detroit also.

The 'experts' will keep changing their picks until it's down to just two teams. Then they'll say, "I told you so." I agree though - Dallas looks tough.

As far as the Hossa trade...right now it looks good, but we'll have to wait in see as far as the Pens overall future...

If it pays off in a Cup, then it was probably worth it...really depends on what you were looking for

There's little to no doubt in my mind Pittsburgh tried to dodge the flyers. Not because it was the Flyers per se, but because odds are its a 7 game series that is bruising and dangerous...sorta like the late 90s early 2000s Maple Leafs teams that no one wanted to play because while they might win, they'd probably lose the next series after one hell of a battle

that's just my take...the Flyers-Pens series is gonna be a great one for hockey...the Flyers are playing with the house's money and the Pens are in it to win it...

Moreover, this series will be great for hockey...and having potential Pitt-Detroit and Philly-Detroit Finals can't hurt either...

Sorry Dallas...

I wouldn't rule out Dallas just yet, but the real test will come against Detroit. I think if they can top the Wings they can top anyone.

Personally, I think the Pens dodged Philly too. But I also think it was a strategy more than a dodge. As you mentioned, both teams would limp away from that kind of series. Pitt didn't play their entire season and make all of those trades to run a risk of losing it all (or losing players) in Round 1. Both teams have shown they are in fact up to the challenge for the cup and won't hold back in this series.

Will the outcome only help the West take on a battered East team?

Detroit the last few years have just collapsed in the latter stages of the playoffs save for their embarrassing loss to the Oilers two years ago. I think the Stars can upset Detroit, especially when you consider how they handled the Sharks from games 1-3.

It's definitely a possibility, but I don't think Osgood and Hasek will let it go that easily. While guys like Datyuk, Z-berg and Franz may have many more opportunities for this kind of a run, those two vets want to go out on top. I can just see it coming down to a Game 6 or 7 OT goal to settle it.

I can't think of a series that I would rather see than Pittsburgh/Philly. I just hope that they don't beat each other so badly that the winner is too throttled to compete vs. Detroit or Dallas.

That's exactly the concern from Pitt and Philly fans alike. But its funny you say how excited you are about this series - practically any fan of hockey is stoked for this one.

Congratulations Frank and to my other ArmchairGM friends who are Penguins fans. That goes with my true intentions from the heart.

However, yesterday was one of the absolute worst hockey days of my entire life (with Pittsburgh and Dallas getting series wins). Only a 1994 East Finals Game 7 or better yet a 1994 Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 loss would've been the worst of all time. The complete opposite of what I demanded from the two games had occurred and both were beyond defeats I will get over anytime soon. I still haven't forgiven Chris Drury for screwing the Rangers over last year and now Marian Hossa. I don't want Hossa here to make it two straight summers Glen Sather has signed the Rangers' ultimate season killer. Penguins fans can call Jaromir Jagr a sissy and opposing fans can hate Sean Avery all they want, but Jarkko Ruutu is a complete ass hole in his own right. Goading Jagr and then shoving him down hard to the ice in full close view of national television cameras showed lots of class and sportsmanship, that f'ing prick...
I'd be more accepting of this loss had the officials once again called the game correctly, especially THAT HIGH STICKING 4-MINUTE PENALTY TO RYAN MALONE! Refs: "Uh, we didn't see it." F U! You didn't see it. Then you shouldn't be an NHL on-ice official, especially in a critical playoff game! What does Chris Drury need to do, lose as much blood as Clint Malarchuk or Richard Zednik?! And THEN by the most complete irony, they call Drury for a high stick and sits for 4 minutes at the WORST possible time! Go to hell!
The Rangers beat themselves. PERIOD! Anybody that thinks the Penguins were the superior team is sadly mistaken. New York no doubt had what it took to beat this team and didn't get the damn job done. Especially the pile of garbage power play! YOU SUCK!
And THEN, Malkin's antics. While I have a problem Crosby getting all hot and bothered with losing ONE friggin' game all postseason, he has the continued necessity to work the referees so Pittsburgh gets awarded their Stanley Cup and NBC suits are all happy, Malkin's slewfooting not once, but TWICE in the final minute of Game 4 has me steamed. A suspension for Game 5 should've been assessed. But no, of course not. The league doesn't want a rising NHL star to miss a potential series-clinching game, do they?
The Penguins have been a thorn in my side for a long time, this despite recent years being dormant. I'll never forgive them for taking away the dream of the Minnesota North Stars last chance at a Stanley Cup title before their dispicible move to Dallas.
And as for Dallas, F them. I have personal reasons why which I won't explain. Right after the winning goal was scored, I turned the TV off I was so disgusted... I want Philadelphia to come out of the East and Detroit out of the West to go to the Finals. Anything short of that, the bitter taste in my mouth won't be gone anytime soon.

No offense to you Frank and my ArmchairGM friends that are Penguins fans, but I'm so ticked off right now, you cannot blame me at the moment for feeling this way. Just my passion coming through at the moment.

Wow - Paul man, you're on fire. I can't hold it against you though for being passionate about your team; by all means, go for it.

The missed call on Drury was an obvious blunder. I wouldn't ask for it to be called but I know it should have been called, no questions asked. And yes, it was ironic that before the end of the game Malone was on the receiving end and the refs called it. I'd be pissed in your shoes as well.

As for the NY media - for the record I'm highly familiar with it. I've been living in the shadow of NYC for years and know how they operate. There were days back in college when I'd have time to read all NY papers - from the Post, Daily News up to the Times - and I still shook my head in the sheer egoism of it all. That's not to say the Post-Gazette or Trib-Review in Pitt is any better with their teams, but I've always found the NYC media to really pump up the 'nothing' calls in games and develop conspiracies around nothing, if not borderline tabloid approach for everything.

With that said, I can see the Rangers making a bid for Hossa in the offseason. If Jagr goes international and says buh byes to NY, they'll need a hearty replacement. Hossa is as good as they come on the free agent market.

And another thing I must mention... you may have an issue about the New York media, Frank (or in the case you showed me, a Newsday writer ripping your team). But New York City has to deal with media folk in 28 other NHL cities that have expressed in their writing a true negative bias toward the Rangers or the city in general and I see and put up with that all the time. How about when the Rangers were accused of ruining the league because the signed expensive free agents and pushed the payrolls way up? They showed hatred for the Rangers while laughing at them when the team failed to make the playoffs for 7 straight years. So, you or anyone else that seems to be pissed at the New York media oughta see things from the other side and get an idea for what it is like here.
