Jagr cries, wishing he were back in Pitt

Read more at Pensburgh.com

Let me first admit - I prematurely broomjaculated.  My apologies.

It wasn't exactly Pittsburgh's strongest game offensively, but then again you can't knock it so much.  I've always been one to give credit when credit is due, and with that I have to say that Henrik Lundqvist is the reason why the two teams are heading back to Pittsburgh.

So the Penguins are heading back to Pittsburgh for Game 5 and Rangers fans couldn't be anymore optimistic.  If this were Game 1, I'd say they have every right to be.  But when you consider the Rangers are still down 3-1 they'll need more than just luck.

Marc-Andre Fleury didn't play a bad game either.  Gonchar screened him on first Jagr goal which was without a doubt a pretty goal.  Then he got a bad beat on Dubinsky's spin-around a la Kennedy goal that pretty much sealed the deal for the Rangers.

The dump and run game works for the Rangers, but it's clearly not the style for the Pens.  Pittsburgh is more of a gun and run team.  The fact they allowed for a slow paced game really put it into the hands of New York.  And, again, Lundqvist couldn't have played a better game.

Malkin and Crosby just didn't look into it tonight.  Next to Jordan Staal's shot attempt earlier in the season, Malkin let loose with quite possibly one of the most disgusting looking penalty shots I've seen in a while.  He's not one for shootouts and penalty shots anyways, but that was downright ugly.

Kudos to the Rangers defense as well.  They single-handedly shutdown Crosby throughout the night, limiting his shots and doing it all in clean hockey fashion.  They also played a well-disciplined game that kept the Pens off their deadly power play and forced 5-on-5 play.  Then again, Pitt certainly took their share of penalties as well, putting New York in the driver's seat.

So we see our second shutout of the series, this time unfortunately to the disadvantage of the Pens.  Both teams head back to Pittsburgh for Game 5, Sunday at 2 p.m.  Put away the brooms and bust out the towels.

haha I couldn't decide on broomjaculated or sweepjaculated. I guess either one works well.

Give credit to Jagr who has been amazing in this series. I think the Flightless Ones will be much more on the attack back at the Igloo.

I agree PG. They have the advantage of creating the match-ups. Ryan Whitney has no business being on the ice the same time as Jagr. The Rangers knew this and took advantage of it. Once the Pens get the last change, they will make sure gill is always on the ice to quiet Jagr.

Totally. And Gill has been playing phenomenally against him. But as Steely mentioned, the Rangers took advantage of the one-man defensive lapse known as Whitney and capitalized on it. You may recall in Game 3, Jagr's goal from the side of the net came from a lackadaisical defensive play by Whitney. It still amazes me that going into Game 3 he was a +5.

Jagr is a dynamo out there. I thought he wasn't going to get back up after the hit he took in last night's game. I think it's only a matter of time (next game) before the Pens end this series, but I do enjoy watching Jaromir play. Side note - I think Malkin should just take a slapper from the hash on his next penalty shot, he'd probably have a better chance of netting it.

Jaromir Jagr was simply a beast last night. Unlike Frank's photo where he was floored by that cheap shot artist Brooks Orpik (the same guy that nearly ended Erik Cole's career), here's what Jagr was seen doing after the final horn... Image:Jaromir Jagr after Game 4.jpg

It was a clean hit.

It may have been clean according to some replays and even Jagr himself, but Orpik appeared to be going after his head. None of the announcers said this, but I saw what looked like to me that Oprik put his arms and/or elbows up toward Jagr's head as the collision took place. But, whatever. Jagr seems to be fine, so I'm not going to make more of an issue about it.

We can only go by what we saw. I was saying how I saw it. I can appreciate your point of view too. I still can't believe more people aren't talking about Malkin's Slewfoot.

Good point. What in God's name was Evgeni Malkin thinking? Does he really think his superstar status would make him immune from facing punishment for slewfooting Paul Mara not once, but twice? It was classless. I'm surprised it didn't get more press. This kid better watch it or he'll become a target by the opposition in the games to come. Gary Green was asked last night by Dan Pollard on NHL On The Fly if Sean Avery did this that he'd get suspended as opposed to a warning that Malkin got. Green refused to give an answer as he knows that many viewers were watching the show and he could've put himself in a bad spot by taking sides in the matter.

As a Pens fan the part that bothers me most is that now Malkin has a target on his back. This clearly isn't pattern of his, but in a series this tight mistakes like that must be kept to a minimum. I am with you "What in God's name was Evgeni Malkin thinking?"

Tej - I couldn't agree with you more. That was by far one of the worst penalty shots I've ever seen. Towards the end of the season Coach Therrien actually started using Malkin less on the shootouts. The surprise appearances in the top of the shootout, or at least the finishers, were defenseman Kris Letang and pestering forward Jarkko Ruutu. While they aren't exactly the highest scoring players in regulation, they sure know how to put it away in a shootout.

Not like it matters now in the playoffs though - but I'm just saying.

Steely - I think Malkin and Sid are going to have targets on their back for the remainder of this series. New York can't afford to take their sights off them. Pitt is going to have to use the likes of Gonchar from the point and Ruutu/Roberts/Laraque up front to really send a few home. Hopefully whatever New York did defensively in this game is not repeated Sunday.

Cityhockey - I don't think the hit was dirty. I mean, you have to look at it from the perspective that if Fleury would've stopped it and given up a rebound (which he is apt to do) then Orpik took Jagr out of contention for the follow-up. With his back to the play, it's hard to say whether he even saw the puck go in. But from where he came from and his motive on the play, it's why he's been one of our better defenseman throughout the year.

But, as you said, no harm no foul.

Thanks a lot. I wouldn't say it's over yet just because I don't want to curse my team. But the odds are definitely stacked in their favor heading back to Pitt; where they've yet to lose a playoff game this season.
