Philly fans protested this to be a dive...

We all know the Flyers and their fans are notorious for classless and thoughtless excuses. So in light of that, and in honor of some of the genuine creativity behind some of these real gems, tonight's recap comes complete with unofficial (but highly likely) Philly retort.

The Penguins charged past the Flyers thanks in part to four power-play goals. Crosby had two of his own, while Malkin and Gonchar each added a tally with the man advantage.

Philly fan says: What - you can't score when the sides are even?

Common sense says: At least one team could capitalize on the power play opportunities.

Jarkko Ruutu and Georges Laraque provided the much needed muscle against the highly physical and playoff hungry Philly squad. Each had their share of time in the box, while Laraque also traded off fighting majors with Riley Cote early in the first.

Philly fan says: Cote totally won that fight.

Common sense says: No he didn't.

Philly's Scotty Hartnell was all over Sidney Crosby throughout the night. Cheap shots after the whistle, full-on gloved punches to the face and high-sticks were common place. Hartnell wound up pretty bloodied up as the night progressed, thanks in part to a surprisingly physical presence from Sergei Gonchar.

Philly fan says: Hartnell plays hard. Crosby only gets what's coming to him. The NHL is protecting "Cindy" Crosby.

Common sense says: Hartnell does play hard, but he also plays dirty. HE is actually the one who got what was coming to him, as did the Philly team as a whole.

Marc-Andre Fleury was phenomenal in net yet again, after starting off in what seemed like a somewhat shaky first. As a complimentary note to the Flyers, the first goal that did beat MAF was a really pretty play. The cross-ice pass from Brierre to Hartnell was unreal. As the game wore on, Fleury's play improved and even saved the game on some outstanding chances for the Flyers.

Philly fan says: Marty was just having a bad night for the third straight time against the Penguins. The Flyers are so well trained they try to shoot THROUGH Fleury's glove.

Common sense says: Biron will not take the Flyers to the promised land. At this rate the Flyers will be lucky to make the playoffs.

Adam Hall was present on the ice for the first time since hernia surgery. Aside from winning a few faceoffs, that was the extent of it. Kris Beech is expected to return as well, probably right around playoff time.

Philly fan says: Who? Big deal.

Common sense says: Exactly.

The Penguins' victory not only clinched the division for the Penguins but also kept Philly teetering on the fine line of playoff elimination. Pittsburgh ends the season on Sunday in Philly, while the Flyers have a game with Jersey in between this past meeting and the next. Pittsburgh's quest for the Conference title comes down to not only their performance towards the end of the season, but also that of the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens have two games remaining and are currently two points behind Pittsburgh who has one game left on the schedule.

Philly fan says: Yeah, but Philly won the first four games against Pittsburgh. At least they did their part to stop the Penguins from winning the conference. Besides, Philly still has a good chance of making the playoffs.

Common sense says: Yes they did, but look who has the guarantee and look who is fighting for their playoff lives. The conference is not out of reach for the Penguins. The playoffs may in fact be out of reach for Philly.

Congrats to the Penguins. The definitely deserved it. And they were able to do it without Sidney Crosby for a while... Way to go!

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins but was it really a big deal defeating Philly? The Orange Crud will not deservedly not make the playoffs.

It's the Pens biggest rival, so clinching the division in an extremely hard fought game while possibly eliminating them from the playoffs at the same time puts a smile on any Pens fan's face.

Sorry guys...took me a while to get my comments working today. I agree with Steely. This was a must-win game for the Flyers and a love-to-win game for the Pens. Not only does winning increase the chances of clinching the division for the Pens, but it's a double the pleasure moment if they can keep the Flyers out of the playoffs. I'd also say it's a bit of a defensive move too. The Pens have never beat the Flyers in any round of the playoffs.

Another great article Frank. What a game. 3 fights in the first period and six goals to keep it exciting. I loved the physical play from EVERYONE. The Power play was on fire and Fleury was seeing beach balls all night. I only wish I could have been there. The last home game of the season is always a good time. The gave away about $100-200,000 worth of merchandise to the fans last night. They gave out the season awards and had "shirts of our backs" night. the Pens locked up the division, and pushed the Flyers closer to the golf course.

Even with less time on the golf course, Pittsburgh would still beat Philly in a Ryder Cup like golf tournament.

haha TB, are you becoming a Penguins fan? Or are you just a Philly hater? The shirts off our back thing is just a classy thing to do. I'm sure teams around the league undoubtedly appreciate their fans, but the Pens never fail to impress their loyal following.

I am curious why more teams don't do this. It's a great gesture and it can't cost the team very much money.

Sid's goal was sweet, but I think that one-timer on his first PP goal was incredible. Malkin's five hole red-lighter on Biron was pretty too.

That game was bullspit and you all know it. The refs missed so many calls. And how does Sidney Crosby get away with so much crap. The NHL has to do something. And I am not saying that is why they lost, the game just needs to be called fairly. Crosby gets away with all this crap all the time. THE GAME MUST BE CALLED THE SAME FOR EVERY PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE...

Seriously - Hartnell was running him over after the whistle and YOU know it. Twice he did it. And I will admit, Gonchar should've gotten an elbowing call on Hartnell. Personally, the game was fairly called. Brooks Orpik went off with Hartnell on that one play...Ruutu went off with Brierre - all of the fighting calls. Crosby and Hartnell's off-setting roughing calls. In all honesty there were a lot of off-setting calls because the refs were sending guys off together. But if the Flyers want to take cheap shots and the Penguins don't retaliate, then Philly has no one to blame but themselves.

Please explain what crap Crosby gets away with. You Philly fans never quit with this BS. The Flyers are nothing more than imposters in the NHL. They lack any sense of class or sportsmanship. There game is to take as many cheap shots as possible and didn't work, cause Crosby and Malkin made them pay. The reason the Flyers lost is on Harnell's shoulders. Maybe if he could figure out how to stop Crosby he wouldn't have to punch him in the face after the whistle. He is a bum and his time in the box cost the Flyers the game. Your team is the one that needs to stop committing penalties not the Pens. Is Envy green the new color of the Flyers. BTW, there were several ticky tacky calls on the Pens last night.

I'm more with frank...its typical...whenever you lose a close game, it always comes down to some little stuff...sometimes you win adn sometimes you lose...its hard to blame the refs all the time...

but steel town, you're attack was just baseless and lame

So Frank, congrats, you're a pens fan i'm fine with congratulating...

It's really not you in particular Jut. But you cannot deny the "Cindy Crosby" references and Diving accusations and the baseless statement that was said by Falcon up above: "And how does Sidney Crosby get away with so much crap." So I do apologize for lumping all Philly fans in together. I was not referring to the fans when I was talking about Class and sportsmanship either. I was talking in particular about the players. The Flyers more so than any other team I have seen play the Pens THIS year, have taken liberties with Crosby in particular. I know this goes both ways but it seems to actually be the game plan for the Flyers. Hit Crosby before or after the whistle and don't worry about the legality of the hit. The Flyers Bench was up in arms when Gonchar hit Hartnell with the butt end of his stick (I agree that should have been called and possibly a game misconduct). But, maybe Harnell shouldn't be taking charges at the Pens like that and twice Crosby took the same abuse to the face. That seems to me like they can dish it out but they can't take it. The Pens weren't whining about no-calls earlier in the year when the dropped so many games to the Flyers. So that is what my comments where based on, not the fans but the players and organization itself. You may not agree with it, but it is not baseless and I don't envision myself ever calling you or Falcon classless. I expect a tough physical game between these two teams. But, generally it should be the tough guys battling it out. What do you think would have happened if someone had punched Gretzky after the whistle.

When Hartnell first got checked against the boards by Gonchar, he looked up at him with that "WHAT NUMBER WAS THAT?" look. It was pretty obvious he hunted him down, but so was the missed call from Gonch to Hartnell. It's kind of like that guy who just won't stay down, or who won't take no for an answer. A solid hit is just part of the game, but Hartnell sought out retaliation and got rocked in the process.

In all honesty Jut, and I don't mean YOU or even in THIS POST, but a lot of general Flyers fans comments this season could easily be categorized as classless and excuses for poor play. It also doesn't help when the league is suspending your players for some obvious suspensions and other borderline calls that may have merely gone into the realm of suspension because of previous similar instances from Philly.

But seriously, and I'm sure Flyers fans would agree, the only thing poor about this game (reffing aside) was Marty Biron letting in not one but TWO goals through the five hole. Do you expect Philly to hunt down a new netminder in the off-season or to stick with him? I think he started off the season really hot for you guys and then slowly but surely went to the wayside.

I would guess that Biron bounces back next year. The Flyers were streaky this year, much like last years Pens. With a year of success under there belts, I look for them to improve all around.

Conference is pending right now - still have to see how Montreal does against Toronto Saturday. I'm hoping, as well as many Pens fans, that Toronto upsets the Habs and Pittsburgh has the title in hand heading in to Sunday's game.

And just on a side note - my one concern for this last game of the season is that if Philly doesn't make it into the playoffs, they won't hold back from potentially taking out a few Penguins in the process.
