Paul O'Neill Hated to Lose

It occurred between World Championships, which might be the reason it is not mentioned when discussing the last Yankees' dynasty, but it was a performance that defined what the Yankees used to be. It ranks with the heroics of Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, Bucky Dent, and Chris Chambliss, but the Yankees lost.

Paul O'Neill's Great Playoff Series

Paul O'Neill batted .421 in the first round of the 1997 playoffs against the Indians. He hit a home run in Game 1, he hit a game winning grand slam in Game 3, and he refused to be the final out of the series in Game 5. It is only 12 years ago, but it might as well be 112 years ago, because the game and the attitudes towards not accepting defeat have changed so radically.

Paul O'Neill wanted to win, but he hated to lose so much, he would do anything to win. As a character in The Wire once said, "You like to win. I don't like to lose. It's not the same thing."

The Yankees' Last Gasp

The Yankees were trailing the Indians, 4-3 in the top of the ninth inning in Game 5. The bases were empty, two were out, and Paul O'Neill was facing Jose Mesa. O'Neill hit a deep drive to right center field that missed tying the game by about five feet. As O'Neill rounded first, he had already decided that he had to get to second to put himself into scoring position. It appeared that he would be thrown out at second, but despite being beaten by the throw, O'Neill slide away from Omar Vizquel's tag, banging up his chin, but getting into second safely.

When Paul got up, his face was full of blood, but all that mattered was that he had given the Yankees a chance. When manager Joe Torre sent Scott Pose in to run for him, Paul objected passionately, but it did no good. Bernie Williams, the next batter, went after the first pitch, hit a fly ball to left, and the Yankees' season was over.

Paul's Passion

The 1997 playoff series against the Indians explained why Paul O'Neill threw his helmet, castigated himself, and lowered his head after striking out. Every game was the seventh game of the World Series and every at-bat was the fifth game of the 1997 playoffs. He might fail, but he never failed to try.

Mel Allen, the only Voice of the Yankees, used to tell fans that the Indians' and White Sox' great pitcher, Early Wynn, would throw at his mother if she got too close to the plate. It has been said that Paul O'Neill looks like he wouldn't want to lose to his kids in a game of whiffle ball.

We Lost

George Steinbrenner said, "He showed you do not give up. Ever. Ever. A heart of a lion - that's what you think of when you think of Paul O'Neill. I wish I had 25 of like him." When Mr. Steinbrenner shook hands with O'Neill and congratulated him in the clubhouse for his great playoff series performance, Paul's response summed up what Paul O'Neill was all about. "It doesn't matter. We lost."

Intensity and the pursuit of excellence cannot be separated. Some individuals demonstrate their intensity, overtly, while others possess it just as deeply but hide it within themselves. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera were or are no less intense than Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, or Whitey Ford, but in the attempts to make society increasingly "politically correct," demonstrating intense feelings and emotions is frowned upon, which is too bad. Baseball needs more players like Paul O'Neill. There is nothing wrong in wanting to win at any cost.

"There is nothing wrong in wanting to win at any cost." My only concern is that certain immoral people will cheat to win. However, I do support the aspect of this statement that promotes people being fiercely competitive.

Agreed. There is nothing wrong with being passionate in sports. Just ask Philly fans. They don't care if you suck or whether or not you get it done. They'll back you on your way to hell if you act like / play like you care and (this is important) don't whine about your situation. There are a lot of things in life that suck. Do what you can to make the things that don't suck awesome. Fans love that s**t....even Philly fans.

You are right about cheating and about competing fiercely. I used "at any cost" to mean at any cost that does not include cheating. If winning means not going out the night before a game, or exercising intensely, or giving up certain things that would hurt chances of winning, then that is the price of winning.

1) Who is "my team"?

2) ...Not as many as "your team" has lost!

2b) If a team has an undefeated regular season but loses the Super Bowl, do the Red Sox ever win another World Series? Hmmm...

3) It's 2009. Stop living in the past. You sound like a 49ers fan. The Patriots haven't been a playoff team in two calendar years (2008 and 2009)... Geez, even the Bruins - and Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Hawks, and Tampa Bay Rays - have advanced in more playoff rounds than the Pats have since February 2008.

4) It's OOOOOOVER!!! It's ALL OVER!!!!

5) Only a delirious Boston fan would bring up a Boston sports team in an article about a Yankee. Enjoy your inferiority complex much?

manny are you stupid or did you just never pass arithmetic in elementary school?

First, Brady has 3 rings. Roethlisberger has 2. Last I checked, 3 =/= 2.

Now, looking in terms of their career progression, Brady won his first Super Bowl ring in year two, as did Roethlisberger. Brady won his third ring in year 5. Ben Roethlisberger won his second ring in year 5.

Second, the phillies and the rays are the only teams that have had as many chances as the pats to make the playoffs. I would say just as the pats haven't been a playoff team in 2 calendar years, it's been a calendar year since the rays were in the playoffs. The Nuggets are a shitty analogy because they've been in the playoffs every year since 03-04. Also, neither the bruins nor the hawks have had as high of a winning percentage as the pats have since feb 08.

On a separate note, why the hate for boston/why the general dipshitiness today? Rawb made a funny reference to the hoodie (see pats fans CAN appreciate actual humor about their own team), and you decided to turn it into a pissing match over the pats, not him.

Surprise! A Pats fan gets sensitive when you rub in facts. Like the fact that I can tell my son "The Patriots have never won a Super Bowl in your lifetime, son." and he can say back to me "That's because the Patriots suck, Dad." The Patriots are THE PAST. Ask a 49ers fan about the 80's and 90's. Because that's what you are going to be.... Living in the PAST!!!

If you're hitting on me, it's not working.

Try writing an article. Oh yeah. Intelligent articles really turn me on. Mmmmm. You might make me moist if you can display your self-righteousness there as much as you seem to think you can in these comments. Interject some actual sports knowledge and Whoops! My pants just unbuttoned all by themselves just thinking about it!

P.S. - I'm doing you a favor. If the Pats were truly awesome, YOU wouldn't have to defend them - once again... in a YANKEES article. The quicker you learn that the Pats are "the Past", the quicker you can jump on to your next bandwagon! Because everyone who knows you - don't worry, we do -knows you WILL jump soon enough!

If the Pats weren't awesome you wouldn't attack them IN A YANKEES ARTICLE.

Manny Stiles, you should start by writing an intelligent article. More words =/= good. In fact, it is quite the opposite in many cases.

Quit while you are ahead and stop berating the many users that appear competent, accepting and nice. All you ever seem to do is criticize, attack and implement what you think is a correct, a.k.a. your, viewpoint even though it has no relevance.

If this site weren't full of other colorful, interesting writers and and entertaining comments, I would not still be here. I hope you're just the exception and not the rule.

oh yeah manny my bad i'm retarded. Pats fans totally brought up the fact that the pats are good. Rawb made a funny joke about Belichik and you decided to get all pissy.

What FACTS are you talking about? The FACT that you have yet to say anything even close to meaningful on this subject? The FACT that you've bailed on the Suns now that they aren't championship quality (here's a FACT for ya - I still wear my wolves hat on occasion. The wolves have won 1 playoff series in my entire life. I'm still a proud pats fan, and they haven't won a Super Bowl since before the Suns were last in the playoffs. Remind me, who's the bandwagon fan now Stiles?). Another fact - you are a damper on this site. When people criticize an article, people like you need to suck it up, and actually have a debate over the subject. Dialogue is good, not bad. Hell, I'd rather this site have 1 quality article a day with an in depth discussion about it than 10 quality articles a day with "great job" written 50 times in the comment sections.

I'm not sure what you mean by "sports knowledge" manny considering all you've provided is random bullshit that proves nothing other than the fact that you have too much time on your hands.

When your team wins almost 70% of their games and still fails to make the playoffs, that doesn't mean their 'done'. That just means they had shit luck. Since their last super bowl run they lost in the divisional playoffs, lost in the conference championship, lost in the super bowl, and then were TIED for first in their division and missed out on the playoffs via a tiebreaker. Since Tom Brady has been a starter, the pats have never finished worse than tied for first in the division.

So as a recap - Stiles has yet to say anything insightful, been factually incorrect, and has spewed complete and utter bullshit.

More self-reinforcing delusions from Mr. Stiles.

I've seen the Pats win 3 Super Bowls, and if that's all I see, then so be it. Living in the past? Nah. But nobody can remember the future, nor can they live in anything but the present.

And it's a pretty sick facking past, if you ask me. 3 rings in 4 years, during a period of unprecedented parody. Until the Steelers made it this year, no other team had even been to multiple Super Bowls this decade. Oh yeah, and there was that 21 game win streak in there. I enjoyed it, and I still enjoy it, so sue me.

And allz I did was refer to Bill Belichick as a cheater, then pulled a JuT and let a picture speak 1,000 words for me.

To be Fair... O'Neill already had a ring and was an All-Star the year before King George TRADED for him. Then again, he never batted above .276 (only twice above .256!) in the NL then batted over .300 his first 6 seasons in the AL (including a league leading .359 in '94) and only batted under .283 his final season (.267)... Check his career and then wonder... "steroids" or "unexplanable mystery"???
