About the Author

Sj-hypocycloid
Mike Frangione has engaged himself in the noble calling of sportswriting over the years (1991-1997, and again in 2007), enjoying two stints covering (stringing) High School sports for my local newspaper in South Jersey. That was a great learning experience and also a great deal of fun.

Pacman Fever

So...Adam "Pacman" Jones has proclaimed himself ready to play football again now that he's on the straight and narrow. Sounds good. He also indicated he'd like to play for Dallas.

I think that the Mean Machine is a better choice. I think the guards are ready for a rematch. Or maybe the Raiders. He'd fit in well there. At least he'd have friends in the stands.

I wonder if Marvin Lewis would be interested? Maybe Pacman could serve the Bengals in a kind of consultant-like fashion. Show the guys there how an NFL player is supposed to act.

I'm sure that Roger Goodell can't wait to have a chat with this upstanding young man. He could be the new face of the NFL. A friendly face to project to the fans. Someone for the kids to emulate. He's just what an image-conscious league like the NFL needs.

And what if (yeah I know - BIG IF) Adam Jones is sincere about being a good citizen on and off the field? Do you still deny him a chance at earning a living playing pro football?

I would be quite skeptical, but if he plays by Goodell's rules, why not? While Pacman is an extreme example of bad behavior, he's hardly unique in that regard among NFL players past and present. If he can help a team, someone will sign him. More power to him when that comes to pass.

I have to disagree. The only reason Pacman Jones is supposedly on the straight and narrow is because he got caught at that strip club last year. If he didn't get caught, he would still be doing what he's doing. Why don't you ask the guy that's paralyzed because of him if he's on the straight and narrow? He's a disgrace. Then after he did that which I don't think he even apologized, he becomes a pro wrestler and gets treated like he's the second coming. Think about it. The night before he was supposed to meet with Goodell, he was at A STRIP CLUB!!! Enough said.

I have to admit to being on the fence here. I think there is a fine line between how the legal system should deal with Pacman and how the NFL should. While I would be quite happy if Pacman never suited up again, the NFL routinely forgives bad behavior. This seems to me to be more of case of one guy pushing the NFL beyond reasonable limits and expecting special treatment. Overall, I have to say that I like how Goodell has handled Pacman. As for whether or not he should be allowed to play again, I'll leave that up to the NFL. I'll stick to snarky comments and half-baked opinions.
